One of the Bimini Sharklab’s main missions is to aid in ‘raising public perception and awareness of sharks and other marine species.’ Since our inception in 1990, the Sharklab has recognized the need to help educate and engage the public on not only current elasmobranch research but also on co...

When most folks think of sharks that are spectacular jumpers, they immediately think mako shark. While they are well known for amazing acrobatics, they aren’t the only one. Here’s a great photo of one of the sharks we are doing two research projects on, the thresher shark. They are beautiful sharks and when they leverage their tail, which is as long as the rest of their body, the sky is the limit!

Sharks keep herbivores from consuming too much seagrass. How do they do it? Fear. A sea cow can't linger on a seagrass bed for too long. Seagrass is a key place where little fish grow up. Sharks again are key to protect the system.

Thought this would be an interesting read to share.

There's evidence to suggest that orcas use tonic immobility to prey on sharks. In 1997, an Orca in the Farallon Islands was seen holding a White Shark upside down for 15 minutes. Whether intentional or not, the Orca likely caused the shark to enter tonic immobility. Defenceless, the shark, suffocated.

Blacktip sharks in Bora Bora. Healthy reefs teem with them and reefs without them are in serious trouble.

Australian giant cuttlefish ❤️💙💜💛 Cuttlefish are molluscs (related to snails and clams) and along with squid, nautilus and octopus make up the group called cephalopods, meaning “head-feet” in Greek, because their arms are attached to their heads.

Both cuttlefish and squid have eight arms (two “legs” and six “arms”) and two tentacles, as opposed to octopus who have eight "arms" and no tentacles.

Here is another example of how nature uses diversity and interconnection to maintain the marine system. Algae can kill a reef but parrot fish scrap it off to keep the reef healthy. See beak. Sharks eat the predators that can consume too many parrot fish. Sharks again are a key to keep diversity and health in the oceans.

I didn't know this was a thing. Learned something new today!

My Spirit Animal 🐋🐋🐋🐳🐳🐳. I love these animals so very much. I remember seeing them for the first time as a kid at SeaWorld and just being captivated by them. They speak to my would. I still remember saying I wanted to do something with them when I grew up. That love and wonder came back and has stuck with me throughout these past years!

The critically endangered vaquita has survived in low numbers in its native Gulf of California for hundreds of thousands of years, a new genetic analysis has found. The study found little sign of inbreeding or other risks often associated with small populations.

The Vaquita is what we will be talking about in 2 weeks. I saw a post similar to this and it just jumped right out to me. I think it is a sign that this is the animal that I am supposed to do next so. This is so sad to know that this animal is the most endangered because of ghost nets in our waters.
