Freedom in Truth A young American's reflections on current political and social topics in light of history, law, economics, theology, and common sense.

Why does evil never sleep? Why do those who placate themselves on the hardship of their neighbors never seem to tire from their nefarious activities? Because a depraved heart, unlike a compassionate heart, will never know fulfillment, friendship, or peace. Such a heart remains adrift upon an ever-widening ocean of misery, doomed to wander in vain for a priceless treasure that will eternally elude it, despite all its tireless scheming. This treasure is a gift that all long for, but not all receive. This gift is peace. With every sadistic triumph, the depraved drift further and further from their goal. Thus, with every victory achieved, every sinister design realized, evil and its disciples merely unearth a fresh layer of soil into dark precipices of their own graves.

The fight now underway in the Middle East will not just be a test of Israel’s resolve, but of every nation that cherishes freedom, justice, and the rule of law under God. As the ravages of war rage through the streets of Southern Israel and Gaza, as the dead and wounded are counted in ever increasing numbers, those who call for peace at any price will seize upon the opportunity to shame others into compliance. Some call for peace out of blatant antisemitism while most do so out of a naïve, politically driven sentiment that a two-state solution will mean lasting peace, not the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state. They conveniently forget that to kidnap women and children, to gun down unarmed men in cold blood, to strip one’s captives and parade them through the streets like cattle are not acts of liberators, but slavers, barbarians who want power for themselves, not freedom for their people. As the N**i death camps taught us three generations ago, civilized society cannot tolerate a regime that utilizes murder, atrocity, and terror in the name of progress. To all Muslims who claim that they do not endorse the abominable tactics of terrorism, the eyes of the world and history are now upon you. If your faith is truly one of peace and enlightenment, stand with the forces of justice and end the scourge of jihadism that has long plagued your fellow believers. This is what Hamas and its followers fear above all: The forces of civilization united against them. In the difficult days ahead, stand firm in the resolve that right makes might and out of the depths of sorrow and sacrifice will be born again the glory of mankind.

Despite the arrogant urgings of an increasingly vocal, insensitive minority, we shall never forget that Terrible Day – the terror, the heartbreak, the righteous anger, the heroism. In remembering, we forever honor those whom we lost, what we lost, and what we learned. To murder is to steal the body, but to conceal history is to steal the soul.

Where the fool sees defeat in failure, the wiseman sees opportunity. Where the coward sees folly in persistence, the brave sees a challenge, worthy of acceptance. For only by falling can we learn to rise again. Only by failing again and again can we improve our character and skills. Without such improvement, success will forever elude us. With few exceptions, those best equipped for greatness are not persons who coast comfortably through life on the tides of prestige or intelligence, but who swim against the currents, who brave the storm of life, armed with the vital elements of courage, persistence, and prudence which only come through years of trial and error. Only amidst the dismal ashes of defeat will one discover the radiant glories of triumph.

Many mistake the truth for a comfortable, yet pitiful flame on a candlestick, needing constant tending so it might illuminate a few forgotten corners in this enormous, dark world. In reality, the truth is a blinding light, piercing every defect in the shutters, every crack in the door, every crevice in the walls. With each dishonest attempt to fill one of these structural defects, two more take its place. But if the truth is so omnipresent, so all-consuming and radiant, what need is there for honest people who boldly proclaim the truth to others? If the truth is self-evident, why not sit back in the ease of silence and allow it to secure its inevitable victory over the darkness? Because, in our blindness and ignorance as imperfect human beings, the light appears simply that, a light – radiant but cold, all consuming, yet distant. More often than not, it is through the words and kind actions of a fellow human being, a kindred soul, that the truth shines most brightly. Helping a friend in need, caring for the weak and elderly, loving one’s neighbor by venturing into that neighbor’s world and interests. In such simple things, those trapped in the darkness begin to realize that the truth is not just a what but a Who, someone who cares and calls them to the light’s eternal bliss. We are not guardians of Truth, but its warriors, tasked with bringing its message of hope to others who, as we once did, cower in the darkness in a self-destructive, irrational fear of the Light.

Missiles exploding all around him, immersed in an impenetrable darkness broken only by the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in the air. Desperately, the young Baltimore lawyer, Francis Scott Key, stared at the dark shape across the bay, Fort McHenry, the last defense of his city and of his country. Only a few weeks before, an invading army had burned the Capital of Key’s country to the ground and routed the American armies. Would this be the end of the Democratic Experiment? Would Freedom fail as quickly as it had arisen? Would his generation be the one to fail posterity? After all, what chance did the United States, a young Republic not even forty years old, stand against the British Empire, the global superpower that had just crushed the greatest military genius of the age, Napoleon? For twenty-five hellish hours, Key watched in worried desperation for any sign that the fort remained in the hands of his countrymen. Key’s only sign was the small American storm flag flying over Fort McHenry, sporadically illuminated by the incessant flash of the bombs. After what seemed like an eternity, the following morning, the British armada broke off the offensive. Overcome with relief and national bride, Key jotted down a few notes, immortalizing this glorious moment when America proclaimed to the world that she was here to stay, that the Great Experiment in Self-Government would not fail. As we celebrate our nation’s 247th birthday today, let us share in Francis Scott Key’s national pride and rejoice in the fact that that same star-spangled banner yet waves O’er the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. As long as America remains the Home of the Brave, she will remain the Land of the Free!

The most formidable arguments consist of three elements: Logic, Passion, and Ethics. One side uses Logic, the other, Passion, and both use Ethics. At the moment, neither side uses all three. The first side to do so is the one more likely to win, not just the next battle, but the war. As it did nearly 170 years ago, our nation and society stand at a crossroads on a fundamental issue. Back then, the issue dividing the nation revolved around the question of Liberty. Today's clash revolves around something even more fundamental, Life. But what is Life? That's the key question and where the great disagreement lies. Why is this debate so significant? Because without Life, you cannot have Liberty. Without Liberty, you cannot Pursue Happiness. In other words, without Life, you have neither Liberty, nor the opportunity to Pursue Happiness. Without Life, you have nothing.

Wise is the man who keeps his heart in Heaven and his feet firmly planted on earth. Unless he does both, he cannot apply what he knows to be Good, True, and Beautiful to the real world. Foolish are those who keep their feet on earth but fail to keep their hearts in Heaven. However, far worse are those who claim to have their hearts in Heaven but refuse to live in the real world. Though they may possess Heavenly knowledge, they remain liars and hypocrites because they refuse to act or live in accordance with what they know and profess to be True. Instead of applying their Heavenly knowledge to real life, they choose the ease of apathy, Gnosticism, self-righteousness, and, at times, the pleasures of selfish immorality. Like wolves in sheep’s clothing, they deceive others and themselves. Worst of all, they taint the Truth and its purity in the eyes of the next generation. Only in the counsel and Heavenly actions of the wise will the young and vulnerable find fulfillment amidst this increasingly isolated, lonely, and skeptical age. Only in the Good, the True, and the Beautiful will the next generation, and humanity in general, find Happiness and Peace.

Two days after that darkest of nights when the Son bled and died, when the veil was torn, when earth visibly wept, when Justice had been at last satisfied and the Promise kept, the longed for Dawn of Hope finally arrived. That Dawn saw the final enemy, Death, broken and bloodied beneath the resurrected body of the Savior who proclaimed Peace to His dwindling, doubtful followers. For more enduring and powerful by far than all the millennia of hate, strife, and suffering that the world had ever known or ever would know was that one tiny, glimmering second of laughter and joy. The victory won, the price paid, the world forever turned upside down, perfect Fellowship fully restored. What then have we to fear? Ours is not to decide what times we live in, but what to do with the time that has been given to us (J.R.R. Tolkien). Peace be with you!

For some, Nationalism and Fascism are one and the same. For others, Nationalism simply means love of country. Consequently, those in the former group call those who love their country fascists. True, many historic fascists claimed to love their countries, and many fought for their countries in war. But what is Fascism? When people picture the quintessential fascists, they typically think of N**is and the infamous sw****ka. The term N**i is an acronym for the title “Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei” (“National Socialist German Workers Party”). Thus, if we equate N**iism with Fascism, a fascist is one who weds love of country with socialism. Starting with the writings of Marx and Engels in the mid-19th century, socialism advocates for the purifying of society of all harmful influences and persons. It holds that certain groups and persons need to be suppressed in the name of social justice. Fascism is the deplorable result when one weds love of country with a malicious political drive for perfection in an imperfect world. To be a fascist is to love one’s country at the deliberate and cruel expense of sister nations and fellow human beings. Without the socialist element, you cannot have Fascism. Therefore, unless you are also a devout socialist, being a nationalist does not make you a fascist. It makes you a patriot.

A land whose monuments predate the majestic pyramids of Old Egypt or the maze-like palaces of Bronze-Age Crete. A nation whose epic stories and glorious songs were expressed even before a written word existed. An island of lush green meadows and forests; wonderous, towering mountains; and content, peaceful villages. A country of fearless, stubborn people who valiantly resisted invasion from enemies cruel and conquerors ruthless. The westernmost extreme of the Celts, whose culture and languages once expanded as far east as the rugged mountains of central Turkey and south to the heartlands of Spain and Portugal. Motherland of an ethnicity whose 80 million descendants now stretch from one end of the globe to another. Home to learned men and women who, 1,500 years ago, used their immense accumulated knowledge to save Europe from the enslavement of ignorance, illiteracy, and spiritual darkness. The forerunner of these early Irish missionaries was St. Patrick without whom this ancient knowledge would never have been transcribed into writing and shared with the troubled and despairing peoples of Britain and the continent. These monumental accomplishments merely scratch the surface of Ireland’s glorious heritage and part of my own heritage as one of 38 million Americans who are proud descendants of the Irish people, whose history, stories, and songs have inspired countless generations across millennia.

A falsehood told by one is a lie, a falsehood told by a few is a conspiracy, and a falsehood told by many is a cult. But no matter how many followers a falsehood may enslave, regardless of how many minds it may numb or hearts corrupt, a falsehood remains untrue. As such, it will inevitably fade, as all deceptions do, in the course of time. For only the Truth exists in the vast, undiscovered halls of eternity, beyond the ravages of time and its destructive, cleansing power. Thus, those who fervently stand for Truth have nothing to fear while those who rail against them have nothing to gain but much to lose.

Even in our polarized society, many would agree that the right to live supersedes the right to be free. For without life, one cannot exercise their freedom. But what is life? Like love and faith, life remains an intangible truth which no measurements, past or present, have conquered with certainty. Then there is the question of origins. When does life begin? At conception, the first heartbeat, a specific stage of prenatal development, birth, or sometime after birth? If we cannot define life, it follows that we cannot determine when it begins. It may start at conception, after birth, or sometime in between. But should we assume such an immense risk? Should we gamble the most fundamental human aspect of all, a life, based on another’s guess? Would we risk our own lives on such a fragile foundation? Someone who would so risk his own life is doomed to fail while a person who would risk the life of another, but not his own, deserves to fail. The former is merely guilty of irrational self-loathing, but the latter is guilty of something far worse, hypocrisy.

When we think of slavery, we imagine fellow humans clapped in iron chains. We picture unfortunate souls being forced to work in muddy fields beneath a scorching sun for fear of the task master’s whip and its cruel sting. This kind of slavery is obvious to the eye and undeniably merits our just anger. Yet, there is another kind of slavery, just as contemptible, but more dangerous than physical slavery, psychological slavery. For within every human being exists a natural desire to chart our own course in life. A physical slave can break from his chains because he has a will to do so. But the psychological slave is one whose chains are invisible, whose bo***ge is self-prolonged because his will to be his own master has been smothered by propaganda and naivety. The greatest slave master can coerce his subordinates without ever touching them, subduing them via dependence on lies and empty promises of justice and plenty. This begs the question of whether we ourselves are free. Have we allowed the conveniences of modernity and the promises of experts to numb us to the point of apathy and ignorance? Do we think for ourselves, or do we allow others to think for us? To all tyrants, nothing is more threatening than a self-governing individual who pursues Freedom through Truth. Unless the tyrant can conquer humanity’s greatest assets, the mind and the heart, he can never truly conquer nor enslave. Without these conquests, the would-be slave master will always remain powerless.

Many today claim that humanity is ruining nature. Thus, they argue that we must improve the natural order through a myriad of economic/political regulations. True, we have a self-evident duty to care for nature. But, like many false teachers of old, these people forget that the laws of nature cannot be corrected by any level of expertise. Nature’s laws are unalterable. They predate all human laws and will persist intact with or without a human race. Consider this. A man-made building can only survive while cared for. When the structure is abandoned, as all inevitably are, nature gradually reclaims the site until its foundations crumble and fade. Many such ruins can be found in present day Russia, inscribed with the infamous hammer and sickle. These ruins once housed political prisons and headquarters for nuclear testing sites where barbarous methods of oppression and apocalyptic destruction were conceived. These buildings ultimately served a fantasy which has precipitated many past and present woes: Mankind can rewrite the laws of nature. Barely four decades later, these crumbling, snow-filled ruins only serve as monuments to our futility against the natural order. Yet, many still ignore history and science, blindly clinging to the false notion that humanity can better the future by bettering nature. As finite beings, we can only improve or destroy that which we can control. We can only control that which we have created. We cannot control nature because we did not write its laws into being.

Some argue that the world was created in six days, others say over hundreds of thousands, even millions of years. Still others say that the world was not created. Rather, it is the mistaken product of pure chance. Each of these groups accuses the others of being irrational. When it comes to the origins of the universe, there are only three conceivable options: One, the universe created itself, two, something created it, or three, it has always been. All three options defy logic and reason. Yet, one must be true. Here is where they differ. An uncreated universe has no purpose. A self-made universe has no purpose beyond its own temporary existence. Do not forget that all things that have a dawn must, by nature, have a dusk. Only in a universe created by an outside force can there be meaningful and lasting purpose. That purpose is even more meaningful if the outside force is not a WHAT but a WHO. A universe created by a personal Being may be just as irrational as all other origin theories. But, unlike the others, this theory gives the universe and all its inhabitants true and lasting purpose. Without such purpose, “life is but a walking shadow . … a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing” (William Shakespeare).

A wise man sees the truth and acknowledges it. A fool blinds himself to the truth by refusing to see it. A liar denies the truth because he has seen and fears it. To the fool, the wise man appears the liar while the liar appears the wise man. Both the liar and the wise man laugh at the fool’s ignorance. Even so, the wise man seeks to liberate the fool from his ignorance while the liar seeks to keep him enslaved. For only in ignorance can the liar hold power over the fool. In the end, the wise man values the truth and the fool for their own self-evident worth. But the liar values only himself and his own distorted version of the truth.

As Halloween approaches, we excitedly prepare to engage in the frightening delights of Trick-or-Treat, costumes, and most notably, ghost stories. Some look at such tales as nonsensical and frivolous at best, and sacrilegious at worst. Despite the seemingly good intentions of such dissenters, they tragically forget that many of these stories have roots stretching back for millennia, often times before the written word itself. While it is healthy to handle such stories with a degree of skepticism, underlying many of these ancient fantasies are invaluable lessons from our long-forgotten ancestors which we would do well to heed. Amidst their vivid portrayal of ghosts, monsters, magic, heroes, and villains, the authors often weave a brilliant moral theme which recognizes the limits of human nature and the excesses to which it can stray if not muzzled by prudence, soundness of mind, and humility. The timeless truth and value of these morals do not conflict with the fundamentals of sound faith and religion. Rather, they confirm such fundamentals. Legends do not survive for 5,000 plus years because they are factually true, but because they contain higher, metaphysical truths that are universally worth knowing.

It has been said that evil never sleeps. If we hold with the teachings of J.R.R. Tolkien, this is because evil is nothing more than an unsatiable lust for power which seeks to devour all in its path. It is a desire to be God. Unfortunately, such a path never brings fulfilment, only sorrow. If we are all honest with ourselves, how many of us have said in our heart of hearts that it is better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven? (John Milton, Paradise Lost). The path to Happiness begins with honesty, an admission of our faults, imperfections, and natural desire to remake the world in our own image. In the end, Happiness can only be found in the One who never knew imperfection and who descended to us, for us. Stripped of its utopian fantasies of glory, evil is merely an alluring diversion from the path to Happiness. That which is unhappy CANNOT find rest.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. (Sir. Isaac Newton). For every bad, there is good. For every villain, there arises a hero. No one could have predicted the unprecedented, bloodstained conquests of Hitler's Germany anymore than the meteoric rise and final triumph of Winston Churchill as the Free World's final hope. No one could have predicted the sudden emergence of the United States as a formidable barrier to spread of Communism. Throughout history, sinister causes have proven victorious from time to time. However, such setbacks have not hindered the glorious cause of Freedom from triumphing in so many countries around the world. No matter how gloomy our present situation may appear, history's ultimate course remains unknown as does the Freedom's final fate. For where there is darkness, there is also light. Where there is tragedy, there is hope.

Like so many despots before him, Vladimir Putin has underestimated the unshakable fortitude of tens of millions of ordinary people who remain determined to charter their own course in life. Putin now finds himself between a rock and hard place. If he backs down now with his forces on the retreat, the myth of his country's irresistible might will be forever shattered. If he doubles down with his resolve to humble the 40 million people living in Ukraine, he risks economic ruin for his own people and political ruin for himself. Having lost the first round against the Ukrainians, Putin has perilously embarked upon the latter course. The outcome of the final round will depend, not just on the courage of the Ukrainian people, but also on the courage of the people of Russia. Putin is not a secure, mighty ruler as some opine, but a frightened little man hiding behind a façade of power and strength. He knows that his power hangs by a rotten thread, namely the disintegrating loyalty of his people. Will it break?

The most dangerous lies are those cloaked beneath a protective layer of truth. The greater the truth, the more convincing and attractive is the lie. Nevertheless, for the liar, the truth is a double-edged sword. The more one studies the truth, the more one recognizes its undeniable contrast and strength compared to the lie. For the dishonest, there is no greater threat to their schemes than freethinking individuals who, through a lifelong pursuit of Truth, can see beyond the passions of the moment and discern truth from wishful fantasy and justice from injustice. In the end, a lie is but a creature of the moment. By contrast, the Truth transcends time and space into the vast halls of eternity. As such, the Truth will always prove superior, though not always more appealing, than a lie.

26/08/2022

Without the will and backing of the people, a government is a meaningless concept, devoid of all purpose, power, and substance. Thus, without the people, a government has no money or resources of its own. The recent vote harvesting measure on the part of the current administration, otherwise known as the $10,000 student loan forgiveness, perfectly summarizes everything wrong in our current federal government. Too many senile career politicians in Washington live under a fanciful delusion that they have the final say over the wealth of their fellow citizens. For political gain, they persist in enacting shortsighted measures which endlessly increase our national debt at the expense of the next generation. Despite studying at an expensive law school, through hard work and a frugal budget, I have been able to keep my debt down to a manageable sum. While I admit that having $10,000 knocked off my debt sounds good in theory, I cannot approve of a such a measure. My fellow Americans and their children should not be forced to pay for my education. Law school was my choice and, therefore, the debt is my responsibility and my responsibility alone.

Doubtless, many of us feel a mixture of disappointment and encouragement after yesterday's primaries. I would venture to say that most of us woke up this morning to find that not all of our choice candidates succeeded in their bid for the nomination. However, this is not the time to wallow in bitterness over our losses. Bitterness only breeds pointless division which will culminate in certain defeat this November. However, unity behind our candidates spells almost certain defeat for our opponents and they know it. At the end of the day, politics is the art of the possible, not the desirable. We must use the tools we have.

28/07/2022

That which cannot be perceived or proven cannot be true. In an age blessed by the conveniences of science, information, and technology, this sentiment governs much of our culture, as it has in generations past. Anything that cannot be captured by our ingenious devices or our basic human senses cannot be real. Accordingly, there is no such thing as Self-Evident Truth. Yet, even in an age dominated by naturalism and skepticism, there remain self-evident truths which cannot be ignored. What about that which we feel the most strongly and yet cannot see? We sing of it endlessly in our songs as mankind has done since time immemorial? It is something that cannot be touched and yet rewards people with both unfathomable joy and insurmountable pain. The self-evident truth of which I speak is of course Love. Without it, society and humanity would succumb to emptiness and extinction. We know it exists simply because we know it exists. It defies our best logic and reason. Yet, it is real. Perhaps that which is the most real is that which our senses and sophisticated technology cannot capture. Perhaps we are the primitive ones. Perhaps Truth is that which cannot be proven because it is Absolute, and we are not. As always, humanity fears and denies most fervantly that which they cannot comprehend.

OUR CHOICE, BUT OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE

As human beings, we feel strongly about the things for which we care deeply. Like all aspects of our nature, this sentiment can serve both honorable and deplorable ends. Devoid of logic and soundness of mind, unbridled passions, even in the pursuit of noble causes, often descend down destructive and unjust paths. Such turbulence sums up a society living under the Rule of Man. By contrast, under the Rule of Law, justice moves slowly, but steadily, thus forcing people to think before they act. Under the Rule of Law, all are held to a common standard of right and wrong. Passions play a role, but are, nevertheless, tempered by reason. Under the Rule of Man, justice is served swiftly and often violently in the name of feelings and passion. As all have different feelings, the Rule of Man inevitably leads to insurmountable divisions and inequality amongst the citizenry. Yes, the Rule of Law may be slow. Yes, the Rule of Law does not guarantee Happiness. But, the Rule of Law does create equality and order, two virtues which the Rule of Man has never known. Only under an orderly and just system, wherein all are equal before the law, can lasting happiness prevail. I strongly believe that this will be the choice before us this election season: The Rule of Man or the Rule of Law.

03/07/2022

246 years ago, our representatives conceived a new nation based on a simple, “self-evident” truth: “All men are created equal.” Guided by this principle, they established a unique system of free government wherein the people would choose their leaders from among themselves to make and enforce laws for the common good. Under this government “of the People, by the People, for the People,” liberty and meritocracy thrived as never before. Thus, our nation achieved prosperity, prestige, and power far surpassing that of ancient Rome or any other great civilization. But, as some of our Founders rightly understood, building a nation on such a principle would inevitably lead to conflict between the principle and the sinister practices in our midst, such as slavery and segregation. The principle of human equality further clashed with many perverse regimes and ideologies elsewhere, including tyranny, autocracy, socialism, and totalitarianism. At a terrible cost in human blood, principle eventually triumphed over practice, both at home and abroad. In accord with our founding principle, our nation avoided exploiting our vanquished foes for personal gain. In all of history, no nation has held such power and used it so responsibly. No other country has so generously and compassionately shared its manifold blessings with those less fortunate. No other country has proven so devoted to the glorious cause of Human Freedom and Justice For All. Today, let us joyfully celebrate America's unparalleled legacy and loudly proclaim our national pride to one another and the world. We celebrate, not because America is faultless, but because America is good. As long as America is Good, America will be Great.
