Women will typically touch their necks when they are experiencing discomfort. The neck is a body part that has a lot of nerve endings, and when it is touched, our heart rates can decrease. This touching is usually done unconsciously as a way for the nerves to help calm us down. For men, face touching is more common while experiencing discomfort as a way to soothe and protect themselves.

The accepted story of how Vincent van Gogh lost his ear is that he cut it off himself during a period of mental illness and presented it to a woman who worked at a nearby bo****lo. However, a number of art historians claim there’s more to the story than previously understood. Artists Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin had an intimate but highly volatile friendship. Allegedly, the two got into an explosive argument one night while standing outside the bo****lo. Van Gogh threatened Gauguin with a razor blade and, in response, Gauguin drew his fencing sword. Gauguin accidentally cut off a chunk of his frenemy’s ear, and van Gogh told the police that he had done it to himself so that Gauguin wouldn’t face prosecution.

It doesn’t matter what shape a watermelon is, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. The idea of growing square watermelons started in Japan, and this unconventional approach made watermelons easy to stack and made less space in the fridge. Farmers created a square-shaped watermelon by placing a square tempered glass around the vine, and as the watermelon grows, it molds into a square.

If a doctor travels back in time and gives a copy of Beethoven’s sonatas to a younger Betheoven who then publishes them, who composed the sonatas?

This is known as the Bootstrap paradox. This paradox explains what happens when an object or piece of information goes back in time, becomes a younger version of itself, and gets trapped in an infinite loop. If this were to happen, it would be hard to know the origin of said object or information. It asks, how did this piece of information come about in the first place?

The Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh struggled for much of his lifetime, receiving little recognition until after his death. Notoriously his own worst critic, Van Gogh’s most iconic painting “Starry Night” was a particularly sore point for the painter. It was painted from memory rather than of a present subject and so he derided it as a failure. His feelings of inadequacy were unhelped by his own brother, who also said of the masterpiece that it was a case of “style over substance”.
