We had Beth Mahaffey on the show a little while ago talking about Tech Anxiety. This is from our Attorney General's office in Louisiana, but I'm sure these questionable apps listed could affect us all.

PARENTS:

Please know about the apps on your child’s phone. We suggest monitoring their phones for unapproved apps, sharing about the dangers of predators, explaining that once a photo is sent it is out of their control, and to never share personal information over the internet.

🚨If you know of a child that has been enticed over the internet by a predator please contact your local law enforcement. More detailed information can be obtained from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.🚨

Trigger warning—child loss.
This week we talked with mom Nicole Hughes, mom of 5, and all-around extraordinary person. She lost her beloved son Levi to a drowning accident in 2018. Since then, she’s become a fierce drowning prevention and awareness advocate. She’s been documenting her family’s journey on her Facebook, Levi's Legacy, since 2018. She’s funny, honest, and describes so beautifully how her family is navigating the loss of her son.

We talked with Nicole about surviving child loss, welcoming two more kids since losing her son, and so many other things.

I want you to know that this episode is NOT only about unbearable sadness. It is NOT. It is about how one family, one mom, summoned the strength and courage to put one foot in front of the other and made a conscious choice to choose living, family, and love even after losing her son.

Don’t be afraid it’ll be unbearably sad. What struck me was not the sadness but the resilience of a mom who’s tryout so hard to give her surviving children a childhood of fun memories and love despite loss. I really want you to hear Nicole’s urgent call to live and spend meaningful time with her kids. It is, to me, one of the most insightful and powerful convos I’ve had.

Thank you, Nicole, for you joining us!!!

So beautifully said. Maybe this pandemic will help us to really see each other—eyes, hearts, and all. ❤️

So beautifully said. Maybe this pandemic will help us to really see each other—eyes, hearts, and all. ❤️

I wonder if we’re just going to become amazing at reading each other’s eyes. Our faces are masked but our eyes...they are now front and center doing all the work our whole faces used to carry.

I’ve noticed over the past few days there is just so much I can see in the eyes of those around me. Also, full disclosure, it makes me feel exposed at all I can’t hide in mine.

I see children whose eyes look desperate for others to see them as they really are. And others whose eyes hold pure joy at just being in the room.

Some are sizing us up, studying us with a look that is not at all sure we know what we are doing.

I see teachers trying to bring excitement to their teaching and somehow hold the eyes of their students with only their own eyes to draw them in. These teacher eyeballs are getting an actual workout as they try and show all the glory in a book or in a math lesson.

There are the people walking among us in the world, their eyes shifting from side to side, no doubt a bit nervous and wondering where the rest of us have been and if we can be trusted.

I see the bright eyes of the cashier at Target whose eyes are warm and inviting or the one whose eyes are tired and done with the world depending on what lane you chose.

There are the hurt eyes of a person who has heard words that have cut deep and without a smile to claim they really don’t mind are left with that hurt on full display...a reaction more honest than any they would have given before.

I see the happiness and freedom in the eyes of people gathering and laughing over some shared joke, their eyes relaxing into a moment that feels almost normal.

And there are the eyes in faces of those I love at the end of a hard day, full of love and relief to be walking through the door, shedding that mask for the time being. But even without the masks I now find myself focusing on their eyes to try and see a glimpse into their souls.

Without the rest of our faces to give us away our eyes seem to say everything. We really cannot keep them from showing our boredom or frustration or love or adoration or sorrow or need.

Our eyes, I’ve found, are just bound and determined to tell our stories.

So if we really look we can see the stories of others right there in front of us. We can see the actual humanity of the people we are walking with through this time.

Perhaps this too is a gift of the pandemic. A chance to look each other in the eyes. Who needs to shake hands when we can look eye to eye and soul to soul and really, really, really see each other. In all our mess and confusion and wonder and amazingness.

Let’s hold this gift in awe and reverence and use it for good. Let’s look into the eyes of those around us and really see them. Let’s add this to the ways we can connect in a time when connection seems hard to come by.

Let’s look into each other’s eyes friends and really see each other.

New parents...you can’t possibly know.

I just found this picture behind another photo in a frame and I’ve unearthed a memory. I see young me about 3 weeks into my mom journey and I couldn’t possibly have known.

And I’m glad I didn’t.

I was working so hard and was so consumed with figuring out this tiny creature. I’m smiling and behind that smile I remember being so worried about how I’d feed her during church that day. It seemed impossible. Maybe because of those crazy bib overalls.

I’m not a planner.

And there was always so much to think about...

Was she eating enough?

Why didn’t she sleep?

What was I supposed to do with her when she was awake? She would just look at me...like now what?

Was she happy?

Seriously, shouldn’t she sleep more?

The first day we brought her home no joke we couldn’t even figure out what to do with her when we ate. So we put her in the center of the table and just looked at her over supper.

We couldn’t possibly have known.

There was so much more ahead of us.

We couldn’t have known how it would be to eventually leave her with someone else while we went back out into the world. How we would have fun with part of ourselves while the other part counted the minutes until we were with her again. We were forever changed.

Or how amazing it would be to hear her first word. How we would keep a running list and gloat over it as if no child had learned to speak before.

Or how hard it would be to send her off to her first day of school....how I would watch the clock and worry over if she’d made friends or had enough to eat or had maybe been a little sassy.

Or how I would wake up over and over worrying when she was on her first sleepover (OK all sleepovers to this day, I like my people in their own beds) wondering if she was cold or homesick or safe.

Or how we would watch in amazement as she walked onto the stage for the first time, taking her talents from our living room into the actual world...how she had become this whole separate person.

Or how we’d send her to middle school and then high school as she grew as tall as us and began this whole life we were only watching, suddenly on the sidelines cheering her on but no longer playing in the game.

Or how we’d bury the pit in our stomachs and hand over the car keys. And that we’d survive a crash (or two).

Or how we’d start to prepare our hearts for her leaving us to go into the world, even as that does not seem like it will really happen.

Or how we’d leave her behind after moving all her favorite things and her very own self to a new home to start new adventures.

Because we can’t know how that will feel.

Just like we couldn’t possibly have known the love we had for this tiny baby would do nothing but grow right along with her.

All we could handle was wrapping our minds around this gift and keeping her alive.

And that’s pretty much still true today.

But I’ve learned it’s what is right in front of you that matters. We can’t possibly know what is coming next. And worrying about it or trying to predict it can steal the joy of what is right in front of us.

I look at young me and in addition to wanting to tell her to lose those horrible bib overalls, I want to tell her it’s OK.

Your baby will eat. You’ll not only figure out how to feed her in church but also pretty much anywhere.

You’ll even survive her future attempts to go vegan. It will be a whole thing.

And someday all she’ll do is sleep...you’ll actually have to pry her from her bed.

And this journey you’re on will be so much fun. There will be bumps but you’ll all be OK.

Because you already know the secret. It’s the only thing you really need to know.

You know how to love this baby...this child...this crazy teenager.

You know love. And because of that so does she.

You’ve got this mama...even when you feel like you don’t. Because you have love and that love will see you through all of it.

Yes!!! 💗
