The Oak Leaves has 28 journalism students writing this fall, with most of them practicing journalism for the first time!

The 8-page paper was laid out by first-edition editors Miriam Erbaugh and Tristen Bronaugh.

Whether writing or doing digital layout for the semester debut, there’s always a steep learning curve and the Oak Leaves is VERY proud of all who produced this first issue. Paper copies will be on racks Friday evening.

Three student journalists won statewide writing awards in the Indiana Collegiate State Association's yearly contest. We congratulate them! Awards and the judges' comments are below:

Opinion Column
First Place
Madison Cunningham, “Put Down the Digital Pacifier, MU”
Judge: “A breezily written call for students to depend less on their cell phones and notice what is around them. Bravo for including some reporting in the opinion to make your argument.”

News Story
Third Place
Chloe Leckrone, “Out of State Suspects Arrested Near Campus over Winter Break.”
Judge: “For an article featuring human experiences in a newsworthy moment that, while it could easily have been missed, disrupted life on campus.”

Entertainment Story
Third Place
Tristen Bronaugh, “Sophomore Writes, Produces Play ‘The Closing Shift’”
Judge: “Bronaugh’s profile is focused, concise, and informative. The writing presents not only the play’s production but also the student writer behind it. The writing clearly understands the importance of presenting a personal connection.”

Co-editors in 2022–23: Chloe Leckrone, Carly Greaves, and Claire Butler.

The Oak Leaves' faculty advisor is Dr. Katharine Ings.
