The Wake County Sheriff’s Office commends several inmates for their quick thinking and compassion shown at the Wake County Detention Center.

Last Thursday, one of our detention officers suffered a medical emergency while supervising a detention center dorm. The inmates immediately noticed our officer appeared to be feeling poorly as she was sitting at her desk. A few moments later, the medical situation caused her to fall to the floor, unconscious.

Without hesitation, the inmates ran to her aid. Two of the inmates in the dorm called for help using the officer’s radio. They knew exactly what call to make, and help arrived almost immediately. Others started banging on the door to get the attention of anyone passing by.

We are thankful that our officer survived, and she is currently recovering at home.

Inmates are not obligated to help our officers in a vulnerable state, but they chose empathy, and they did not delay. This incident highlights the importance of mutual respect between our detention officers and those entrusted to our care.

"The inmates responded and provided care until help arrived. We thank our staff and the inmates for the professional relationships they have built to better serve and assist one another," Sheriff Willie Rowe said.

Keefe, our commissary vendor, will be donating commissary snack bags for the inmates in the dorm. We are grateful to these inmates for the courage and kindness they displayed.

We are looking into ways to recognize their actions appropriately.

"Our detention officer had her radio on her, she had keys on her, she had OC spray, and this situation could have gone a different way, but it didn't, and they helped her," Detention Director Dail Butler said. "When we thanked the inmates after it happened, their first concern was how she was doing."

SCAD passes in part 4-3.

The council majority decides to pass items recommended by planning staff and punt on items not explicitly recommended by planning staff. They also decided to punt on the PATH program.

More details later. :)

Councilmember-elect Baker concedes there are “benign and good provisions” in the privately initiated development ordinance rewrite (aka SCAD). Advocates for an accelerated city-initiated development ordinance rewrite if SCAD passes tonight (it is expected a lot of it will pass).

SCAD (privately initiated Durham development ordinance amendment) is tomorrow during the last council meeting before the handover to the new council.

Will this council hand it to the next council? What did the task force determine? What parts will pass?

🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Of note: I was really hoping that the opposition to SCAD had taken the opportunity to go through and identify what sections they liked, sections they maybe liked but with amendments of their own, and sections that should be rejected.

I really think some of the amendments (beyond the PATH program-related amendment most of council seems to not like) could have undergone some more significant changes from what’s presented.

But opposing it as a whole might result in a more developer-friendly UDO than if the opposition was more strategic and selective, imho.

Cotham has decided to try and make the case that she is now a conservative Republican (after being a rank and file dem for years).

I fully expect a competitive and potentially expensive GOP primary. She is by no means a shoo in.

I didn’t know CTE could show up that soon.

They started playing football as kids, began to suffer mentally and died before 30. Researchers found they had C.T.E., the brain disease linked to hits to the head. If their families could go back, would they still let them play?

AIPAC’s $419k donation to the Foushee campaign (spent much more in independent expenditures) was crucial in boosting then state Sen. Valerie Foushee’s profile in counties other than Orange (who knew Foushee) and Durham (who knew Allam). Voters in Granville, Person and Alamance counties didn't have a lot of knowledge of either candidate.
