On a close 3-2 vote, the Durham County Board of County Commissioners approved the $16.5 million Durham County Sheriff's Training Facility.

Commissioners Burton, Lee, and Valentine voted yes. Commissioners Allam and Jacobs voted no.

Commissioners voting "no" supported the facility in practice but expressed frustration that requests for meetings/information were not honored with deliberate speed.

Commissioners voting "yes" trusted the Sheriff to honor his word on expanding the HEART program. Those commissioners also expressed concern about the impact on the deputies if the facility was further delayed.

This was the first major issue for the new Commission.

Republicans might be targeting Medicaid expansion (the same program NC joined in December 2023)

One of the newest R members of Congress is intimately aware of the impact of the expansion…because he used to be the Speaker of the NC House (Rep. Tim Moore)

Given that he has leverage due to the slim R majority, does he use his power to try and block those cuts? Probably not. 🤷‍♂️

Durham Public Schools administration says they are confident they can end rotational bus coverage by January 17.

One significant change is that elementary schools will have zones without bus service (family responsibility zones, starting January 21), saving the district some bus routes.
