The Leonine Prayers (Prayers After the Mass)

Originally introduced by Pope Leo XIII, then reinforced by succeeding Popes, these prayers were said after Mass for the protection of the Church in times of crisis.

Though no longer mandatory after Vatican II, Pope St. John Paul II, at least, requested Catholics to embrace once more the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. And he is right.

With all that's happening in the world, especially in the Church, it is high time that we must return this powerful prayer. Do not just pray it after the Mass but also in everyday of our lives with the intentions of peace in the world and protection of Holy Mother Church!

Welcome to the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary from the Luminous Mysteries Chapel at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, DC. Throughout the month of May, the Knights of Columbus, in union with Pope Francis, offer this prayer to Our Blessed Mother for your intentions and for an end to the pandemic. Please share your petitions in the broadcast comments or by email to [email protected].

PRAYERS PROPOSED BY POPE FRANCIS

O Mary,
you always brighten our path
as a sign of salvation and of hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,
who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain
while remaining steadfast in faith.
O loving Mother,
you know what we need,
and we are confident you will provide for us
as at Cana in Galilee.
Intercede for us with your Son Jesus,
the Divine Physician,
for those who have fallen ill,
for those who are vulnerable,
and for those who have died.
Intercede also for those charged with
protecting the health and safety of others
and for those who are tending to the sick
and seeking a cure.
Help us, O Mother of Divine Love,
to conform to the will of the Father
and to do as we are told by Jesus,
who took upon himself our
sufferings and carried our sorrows,
so as to lead us, through the Cross,
to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen.
Under thy protection we seek refuge,
O Holy Mother of God.
In our needs, despise not our petitions,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

(Adapted from the prayer of Pope Francis)

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.
In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.
Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.
Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.
Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the front line of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.
Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.
Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.
Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.
Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.
Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.
To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

“God has called home a good man and one of the Knights’ great leaders,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Virgil Dechant used to say that his goal was to leave the Knights better than he found it, and in myriad ways, he accomplished that. He leaves a lasting legacy and an excellent example of what it means to be a Knight and a fraternalist. Nowhere is this more true than in his home state of Kansas, which remains in many ways a model jurisdiction.” Read more:

Virgil C. Dechant was the Order’s longest-serving supreme knight, holding the office from 1977 to 2000.

When founding the Knights of Columbus, Father Michael McGivney picked Christopher Columbus as a namesake for the organization because in a time when anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant feeling ran rampant, the American public embraced this famous explorer.

She asked Her, 'How much are you selling the Saba for?'
The Old seller replied, 1 Peso per banana, Madam.'
She said to her, 'I will take 6 banana for 25 cents each or I will leave.'
The old seller replied, 'Come take them at the price you want. Maybe, this is a good beginning because I have not been able to sell even a single banana today.'

She took the bananas and walked away feeling she has won. She got into her fancy car and went to a 1st class restaurant with her friend. There, she and her friend, ordered whatever they liked. They ate a little and left a lot of what they ordered. Then she went to pay the bill. The bill costed her 1,200 pesos. She gave 1500 pesos and asked the owner of the restaurant to keep the change.

This incident might have seemed quite normal to the owner but, very painful to the poor saba seller.

The point is,
Why do we always show we have the power when we buy from the needy ones? And why do we get generous to those who do not even need our generosity?

I once read somewhere:

'My father used to buy simple goods from poor people at high prices, even though he did not need them. Sometimes he even used to pay extra for them. I got concerned by this act and asked him why does he do so? Then my father replied, "It is a charity wrapped with dignity, my child”

I know most of you won't share this message but if you feel that people need to see this, then do spread this message.

Just 13 letters and a few quotes recorded by the local newspapers — that is what remains of all the words written and spoken by Father Michael J. McGivney across his 38 years.

Why We Are Knights

There’s much work to be done in the world, and the Knights of Columbus are doing that work every day. Good work. Necessary work.
Bringing assistance to the sick, the disabled and families in need, protecting those who can’t protect themselves – whether they are next door or halfway around the world.
We do this not simply because we want to, but because, as Catholic men, our faith reminds us it is our moral obligation.
For us, there is never a doubt about that.
We do it to be better husbands, fathers, sons, neighbors and Catholics.
It’s one thing to say who you are, but another entirely to live who you are and put your values into action.
Together, this fraternity of men strives to better ourselves as we help improve the life of others.
And we seek no accolades.
Our reward is the joy and satisfaction we receive every time we see our faith at work.
