ASCENDING is a global platform for the work of emerging artists working across performance disciplines seeking to give voice to the dynamic work of the next generation of designers, artisans, makers, and story tellers.
· Present design as an equal collaborator and driving force in the creation of live performance
· Examine the contemporary industry and often ask provocative questions
· With an understanding that theatre is created in a multitude of ways, embrace and celebrate the myriad approaches and types of performance created across the globe
· Examine work not only in traditional theatre spaces, but also the range of endeavours undertaken by contemporary emerging designers in other spaces, such as drag, fan conventions, film, etc…
Editions are published every 6 months (in April & October) and are listed as Acts and Folios. Each Folio has 7 Acts running over the four years between each PQ. In order to keep the work fresh and connected with emerging artists, a new team will be engaged at each PQ to take the work forward for the next Folio, though some collaborators might remain in an advisory capacity. This forming of a team for a limited time allows for a sense of commitment and community and for each group to work toward an end and sense of closure before passing on this platform to the next generation of emerging designers.
A COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY: We recognize the privilege that white artists and those from nations which have traditionally engaged in empire building/colonialist practices enjoy in many parts of the world and full throatily condemn intolerance, prejudice, discrimination, and exploitation in all its forms whether based on the color of person's skin, where they are from, how they identify, or who they love. We especially seek your support in helping us connect with artists of underrepresented backgrounds who often are not heard by our industry. We commit to sharing their stories and bringing their experiences to light as a cornerstone approach of curating our content.
