For those with cars, here are some tips to stay safe when going back to your car parked in the parking lot, car park, or even just across the street.
1.) Try not to be distracted by the phone or your music player when going to your car. Parked cars provide excellent cover for criminals, as they can just crouch and instantly pounce when you're unaware. In addition, being distracted on the phone or while listening to music makes you unaware if you are being followed by a would-be attacker or two.
2.) If a stranger approaches you while you're walking to your car, try to create distance by walking diagonally. If the stranger changes direction to meet your path even when there's no reason to, then be prepared to run away or defend yourself if needed.
3.) If in a car park with walls, it is advisable to park facing -away- from the wall, especially when you will load a lot of things in the trunk. This way, while you're focused on loading items, you won't be taken by surprise from behind. But this is not always effective, so you still have to be aware of your sides.
4.) When getting in the car, immediately close and lock the doors. Don't open the door, especially as a driver, get in, and fix your things before closing it. Secure yourself in your vehicle first before fixing yourself up.
5.) If a stranger knocks on your window, especially at that time of night, don't roll the window down fully, and never open your car door. Entertain if you must (if asking a question) but if no need, ignore and drive on.
These simple tips should help improve your safety. Enjoy!
