Kara here, back from the almost dead to tell you we’ve posted new episodes the last few weeks but I haven’t been posting here. Good thing our guest Summer was on break too!

Trauma-informed Mental Health with is available where you get podcasts now!

Summer Forlenza LMFT joins Kim & Kara as an expert guest. Talking about trauma-informed mental health, Summer sheds light on popular therapeutic approaches used for survivors and their support persons.
Summer Forlenza helps people to heal from trauma and to support the survivors in their lives so that we can build a world with more compassion, connection, and joy. She does this through her work as a therapist, educator, and facilitator.

Summer graduated with her Master’s in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University in 2018. Since then, she has worked with teens in school-based counseling, with the general population in community mental health, and with eating disorder patients at residential, intensive outpatient, and partial hospitalization levels of care.

Summer now runs a virtual private practice providing online EMDR therapy to California residents. In her practice, she specializes in treating the impacts of trauma, including eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and the cycle of abuse.

Educators are near and dear to Summer's heart. In her life before therapy, she taught 5th grade in East Harlem for a year, then worked as a substitute teacher for the two years she was in graduate school. Summer's husband is a 4th-grade teacher, both of her parents are teachers, and her grandmother was a school principal.

Summer loves pop punk music, her dog Ronin, taking up new hobbies, and building Ikea furniture. On weekends you can find her writing, taking long walks, listening to podcasts, or trying new recipes.

Chapter 17 | with
Get ready to feel some feelings this week. Although for Kara, the feelings are mostly nausea. Pregnancy is kicking her butt this time around so the vibes while Kim and Kara play catch up are rather relaxed. Updates on former guests and are on tap as well as SGTC making a pretty cool ethical true crime top ten list on .

Benzii Diaz joins Kim and Kara to talk about her experiences as a child and how they impacted her into adulthood. Still early in her recovery journey, Benzii's revelations throughout this raw interview offer a unique look at the oscillating feelings survivors go through on a daily basis.

Benzii Diaz is a survivor of domestic minor s*x trafficking. Today, she is a thriving advocate, influencer, and businesswoman. Benzii has dedicated her endeavors to breaking the molds and stigmas of what a survivor is "supposed to be". She has testified at the Pennsylvania State Senate, coordinated drives for the youth and homeless, and has worked with celebrities. Her efforts over the past 6 years have been nationally recognized and she has been deemed one of the most influential women in the tri-state area all before the age of 30.

When we work with survivors, it isn't just for an interview. The guests we host are fully in charge of their episodes. We carefully comb through our recorded conversations in editing, draft all of our show notes, identify proper crisis resources, and link any calls to action discussed before sending everything to the survivor guest for their review. Any changes they want, we make--no questions asked.
This is vastly different than what we have experienced working with most media outlets and content creators in the past. Once we relive and share our story, it is out of our hands and in that of a journalist, content creator, or the company they work with. It can be a scary process, and we have certainly been burned, but we engage in this practice over and over. We know how important it is to have survivor stories and voices heard.
When we created SGTC, we sought to be the change we wished to see in the world of covering true crime. I (Kim) was talking this afternoon with to run a couple of sentences we were including in our press release by her as they mentioned her and her story. Seems like a no-brainer, but she reminded me that what Kara and I are doing here is not yet the industry standard.
Jess said: “Thank you so much for making such an effort to help me feel safe. You’ve gone above and beyond for this newbie advocate and I’m so grateful for you.” (shared with her permission, of course).
It’s not rocket science, it’s consent. Radical respect for survivors and the stories they have lived should be at the center of all true crime content, but we aren’t there yet. It’s up to all of us as consumers to demand that autonomy and consent remain in the hands of survivors and their families.
It’s ok if we haven’t always gotten it right, so long as we are learning and doing our best to be better today. 💖

"After advising Lifetime on their telling of her story, she launched a podcast with partner Kimberly Corban, another survivor. Their Survivor's Guide to True Crime focuses on the survivors' perspectives of crimes.

Their first guest is kidnap survivor and Girl Who Escaped executive producer Elizabeth Smart. In the weeks ahead, Survivor's Guide aims to include a diverse array of survivor experiences.

"We're also two white women," Kara Robinson Chamberlain said. "We're also aware that that doesn't represent all of the people who have become victims in this world."

Robinson Chamberlain said her purpose with the movie and the podcast was to provide future survivors with resources should they experience similar traumas. She said that when she escaped, she did not see any depictions of her fight, flight, freeze, and appease approach.

"They can understand that the things that they're experiencing might be a normal response," Robinson Chamberlain said. "The more diversity we can have in our guests, the more we can reach more people who may feel seen and heard."

Kara Robinson Chamberlain said the Lifetime movie about her experience, "The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story," helped her unbury emotions she'd blocked from her kidnapping.

Survivor’s Guide to True Crime

What’s in a name?

True crime is the top genre right now. To what end?
The content follows a pattern:
“Life before, details of the crime, resolution of the crime.”

As survivors, we believe there’s more interesting parts of the story like what comes after, how did you heal, how did you take back your power.

These are the conversations we love to have and are going to share with you.

We will talk with other survivors and share their stories of how to heal and how to move forward.

Real stories. Real conversations. Real inspiration.
