As a product of the feminist movement, international women’s day was created to resist the patriarchal system and fight for women’s equal rights.

However, one should wonder how a western concept encompasses the global realities of all women. How do marginalized women, indigenous women, black women or women in developing countries fit into this concept.

Join us tomorrow for a live session where will discuss the contributions of woman’s day to our current experience as well as its limitations.

This Thursday we will be facilitating a workshop at Elizabeth House, which is a rehabilitation centre offering a continuum of intervention and support services to families with children aged 0-5 years, on the intervention and prevention of microaggressions and racial discrimination within the workplace.

The goal of this workshop is to help participants understand how racial biases towards black people develops and how they lead to microaggressions and discrimination. Moreover, employees and managers will be provided with tools and strategies for appropriate intervention and prevention.

The first month of the new year is coming to an end and we want to know, is it still new year, new you?

Are you still pretending to be different people every year? Or have you finally accepted who you are and decided to make conscious decisions to be better?

Are you still setting goals that feel unattainable and getting discouraged when and if you don’t reach them? Or have you learned that slow progress is better than no progress?

We want to hear from you!

Tune in Sunday January 29th 2023 at 3:00PM on IG live for another interactive session where we demystify new year’s resolutions.

Mental health impacts all of us, whether directly or indirectly, and in a plethora of ways. The unfortunate reality of mental health concerns, illnesses, and disorders, is that many are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, there is a prevalent issue of stigmatization, and systemic inequalities impact the way certain marginalized communities access resources and social support.

Tune in to episode #4 of the Fall Awake Podcast coming this week, as your hosts talk about mental health, provide valuable research and information on the topic, and open up about their own experiences with mental health issues.

We all look for a day where we can truly say “finally , all lives really do matter” but that isn’t the case and should never be uttered out of your lips when each and everyday you see or hear of a life being lost without justice being served, without those at fault being held accountable, or without people caring. All lives are supposed to matter, but the world has showed us that Black Lives and Indigenous Lives matter less than white lives, immigrant lives matter less than nationalists, disabled lives matter less than able bodied lives, women lives matter less than their counterparts, and the list goes on so. So no, we aren’t stupid. All lives never mattered in the system we live, but we will continue to lift up the lives of those on the margins; of the populations who’ve been forgotten. We see you, and we love you, and we will continue to honour you til our last breathe!

touched on so many points that people still fail to wrap their head around. As she rightfully said, we have inherited racism from a system of oppression create by Western/Europeans who’s descendants (ALL WHITE PPL IN THIS WORLD) benefit from the privilege that system created.

Transformational change will come when those who benefit the most finally decide that oppression and inequality is not the way. Until then, we will continue to stand for justice, for what’s right, to speak up in the face of oppression , inequality, and racism, and fight, every minute of everyday for that damn respect and dignity we deserve and is owed to us.

I know some ppl, black ppl included, are tired of our war cries but this battle ain’t over until we are no longer denied opportunity because of our skin... until we no longer have to explain why black lives need to be included in your « all lives matter » rants.

We face so much opposition because the dominant culture never expected us to be more than slaves, but we have become doctors, teachers, politicians, lawyers, community leaders, and most importantly, helpers and healers of our people.

The world wants to keep us divided like they did our ancestors. The world wants us hating each other and pitching us against each other so that our communities are broken and never reach institutional completeness( black owned banks, gyms, schools, government sectors, etc). It’s time to wake up! It’s time to do more! It’s time to work

18/09/2020

As a member of a marginalized community, I know, and have felt, the impact racism and social inequalities have on our emotional well-being, and mental, physical and spiritual health. While others have been privileged enough to be cared for and receive social, environmental, or financial supports when necessary, minority populations have not received the same quality of care, forcing us to rely primarily on ourselves and the need to be creative and resilient in order to survive.

Even though, by overcoming stress, we are able to acquire new skills, being in a constant state of fight-or-flight is poisonous. It can cause long-term health issues or promote the generational transmission of trauma, all of which are perpetuated and sustained by the constant presence of risk factors like low socio-economic status, lack of resources, discrimination, etc.

To those of us who resonate with this, we know that self-care too exhibits certain privileges. A privilege that juxtaposes self care as in just taking a bubble bath versus a concept that also includes speaking up for ourselves, saying no, disconnecting, or setting boundaries. All with the aim of reducing or managing the stress society has imposed on us, so that we can continue to persevere on this road where intersecting forms of oppression so easily besets us. As Tris Mamone put it, ‘the opposition wants us to lose our hope and our energy, but we will choose to take care of ourselves and love ourselves and fight another day’. This is WARFARE! .angeline

Art - we live it, we breathe it, we imitate it, we express it. It isn’t just a nice painting or a good song, it represents the very essence of our entire being; the way we dress, the way we speak, our gestures... WE ARE ART!

It’s the creative and fluid spirit that dwells in us that helps us express our deepest emotions and paint the world we live in as we see it or as it should be.

Art has been used for centuries to tell a story, to share history, for worship and praise, and, most importantly, as a tool for the oppressed; to make their voices heard and for others to understand their pain. From songs like strange fruit recorded in 1939 by Billie Holiday, which was written in “protests [of] the lynching of Black Americans, [...] comparing the [murdered black people] to the fruit of trees,” to trends that were birthed by the oppressed and appropriated by non-ethnic people, such as intricate braiding styles that were once used by slaves as roadmaps or to hide grains of rice. All in all, Art and activism is a union that seems to be staying, for better or for worse - .angeline

“Hip hop activism”

A term coined by the hip hop intellectual and journalist Harry Allen, and one that holds weight. Hip hop, as well as other forms of music like jazz...reggae as well (with its origins in the Caribbean stretching all the way to Melanesia and other Pacific Islands), was at the epicentre of Artivism. Music has been used for centuries as a medium for marginalized people to share their stories, speak on their truths, change narratives, and invoke change. The hip hop movement in itself originated as a way for the people to speak out against the racial and social inequalities members of the African diaspora face. Social issues such as advocating against the violation of basic human rights, or fighting for educational, health, and housing resources, to prison reform and the like, coupled with cool beats and fashion trends, along side the vast community it created, made this social tool unstoppable. Unfortunately, today we see that the tides have turned and music that was once used to break chains of bo***ge for our people, has now become a force that promotes sexism, hate, and violence. There are powerful people out there who new the value of Artivism, and they have been manipulating the movement ever since. - .

“Art imitates life, and life imitates art. As it is so, I truly believe that it is our obligation to use our platforms and various forms of artistic expression to raise awareness, educate, and advocate against the oppression and marginalization of our people, and our communities. It is also our responsibility as artists and creatives to be attentive to the social issues prevalent within our society and the world, whether it directly affects us or not. To me, that epitomizes ARTIVISM” - .angeline

Artivist Eve Ensler stated:

“This passion has all the ingredients of activism, but is charged with the wild creations of art. Artivism—where edges are pushed, imagination is freed, and a new language emerges altogether. It promotes the essential understanding that ... [humans] ... can, through courageous creative expression, experience the unifying power of love when courage harnesses itself to the task of art + social responsibility.”

“Kwanza Osajyefo’s comic BLACK take on race and racism in the United States. But don’t call his work political. “I don’t like the experiences of marginalized people being dismissed as politics,” he says. “It’s not politics to ask you to treat me equal when you say that we are an equal nation. There’s nothing political about not wanting to get shot just because of the color of my skin. That’s not politics; that’s basic humanity.””

The initial purpose of this project was to celebrate amazing black women in our community. Women that break down barriers and defy the odds. You know those strong black women that work hard behind the scenes. In collaboration with .ninety.0ne, we wanted to let them know that their work does not go unnoticed. Most importantly we wanted to highlight their beauty and remind them that they are QUEENS.
What ended happening was a genuine exchange of energy. We shared our knowledge, experiences and skills. And created a shared memory filled with black girl magic!!

Racism, discrimination, prejudice, and bigotry, are all diseases that plague the mind. The common denominator is fear or disdain towards those who are different; whether culturally, religiously, sexually, financially, or even those who have different views, values, and beliefs. But being different is the least of our problems, so even if we stand alone, we should always stand for protecting the rights and livelihoods of those who don’t fit into the status quo; those who are persecuted, marginalized, or forgotten because of their “differences.” After all, this world would be crazy boring if we were all the same 🤔 .angeline

Hey there family 👋🏽

Listen to our latest podcast « Mirror Work » with guest Shanice Nicole Speaks as we discuss the concept of internalizing anti-black racism and the implications it has on the black community.

https://soundcloud.com/user-146469466/internalised-antiblackness/s-5D7Pr7Jc3EH

In this episode, we welcome Shanice Nicole, an educator, facilitator, and community organizer. Throughout the conversation, we explore the complexities of internalized anti-blackness in our community.

10/07/2020

“Mirror work; a process that consists of looking into ourselves as part of a journey towards self-awareness, and speaking life and positivity over our entire being, is a learning experience all of us should embark on. However, for the black community and the ways white supremacist societal standards have been a breeding ground for anti-black racism, our mirror work involves deconstructing the ways we have internalized the concept of black inferiority.” - .angeline

“It takes a lot of strength to admit that the negative things that were spoken over our lives might have seeped into the way we self-identify, and construed the perception we have of ourselves and others within our community. Imagine how much more love we would have for ourselves if society never tried to condition us to believe that we were inferior to, or lesser than, our non-black counterparts” - .angeline

03/07/2020

“As people of color are victimized by racism, we internalize it. That is, we develop ideas, beliefs, actions and behaviors that support or collude with racism. This internalized racism has its own systemic reality and its own negative consequences in the lives and communities of people of color. More than just a consequence of racism, then, internalized racism is a systemic oppression in reaction to racism that has a life of its own. In other words, just as there is a system in place that reinforces the power and expands the privilege of white people, there is a system in place that actively discourages and undermines the power of people and communities of color and mires us in our own oppression.” - Donna K. Bivens

Stay tuned for this weeks episode as we sit down with to discuss the complexities of internalized racism.

In the midst of all the pain, toxicity, and destruction going on within the current social climate, it’s easy to feel lost or out of place. As the sentient beings we are, it is common to absorb the energy around us, and if that energy is negative it becomes not only emotionally draining but discouraging as well. However, let’s try to remember that as dark as the world may be, we must always hold on to the hope of a brighter future. Believe it, and we will achieve it! - .angeline
