Why is Circular Housing Development important?

“When you demolish an apartment block, it is not only the physical structure that is destroyed, but also the memories and sense of community of those who live there.” - Project Manager for Nature & Landscape in the town of Kerkrade.

'In the southeast area of the Netherlands, in the province of Limburg, the municipality of Kerkrade faces depopulation. In the next 30 years, the number of residents in the Parkstad area is expected to shrink by around 27%. The municipality has calculated that of the 400 apartments housed in four tower blocks, only about 130 will be needed in years to come. So, they have started to pull some of them down.' Souwie Buis writes in our latest article.

'The 2012 demolition of the first of these apartment blocks made this clear and prompted the local government to look for other options. In 2014, Kerkrade started to look for sustainable demolition options. One solution, from contracting company Dusseldorp, was simply to saw an existing apartment out of the block and place it on the ground as a new, free standing home.'

'Imagine if buildings in the future could be constructed and dismantled like Lego houses.'

'Using the same blocks for a variety of constructions that conform to individual needs and tastes. This is how Victor Moura and Marco Theunissen explain the idea behind the SUPERLOCAL circular estate building project in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. It is the first of its kind in Europe.' Souwie Buis writes.

'Food is fuel, they say. But it is also cultural, economic, and increasingly political.'

'The Slow Food movement began more than 30 years ago in Rome with protests against the construction of a MacDonald’s near the city’s iconic Spanish Steps. Today, it is a global movement, active in 160 countries that works to preserve local food varieties and promote sustainable food systems.' Souwie Buis writes in the latest Driving Change article.

Meet Le Vu Hoang Trang, the Paper Slayer as our Columnist Carolyn Whelan writes.
Trang is the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Official in Da Nang City, Vietnam.

In our #2050 series she shared with us that 'to be good at this job, one needs to read a lot for a broad and holistic view about various aspects of a certain problem. This is especially true of working with international organizations.'

Since July 2017. R Krishna Mohan leads The Chennai Resilience Office and the development of the city’s Resilience Strategy, as Chief Resilience Officer.

He told Driving Change how he is helping to cool the planet through his work:

"By improving the thermal performance of buildings through our Urban Farming Initiative. It uses Mobile Rooftop Vegetable Garden Kits (MVGK) in vulnerable/low-income settlements to increase access to nutritious produce. The lower-cost MVGK and its modular, variable, and portable aspects will help reduce the electricity needed for cooling and heating across a range of communities in India, which in turn cuts carbon at scale. There is enormous potential to scale and customize implementation of such kits based on the space available, local climate conditions, and local diets."

'Campaigns for social change and consumer brands are often reluctant bedfellows but Jo Hobbs and Maddie Smith are big believers in corporate matchmaking. Hobbs is chief executive of the British Youth Council (BYC), while Smith is U.K. managing director of The Body Shop, part of Brazilian cosmetics group Natura.' Andy Cave writes in our latest article.

'They got together for their “Be Seen, Be Heard” campaign in April after “swiping right” on the issue of lowering the voting age in all U.K. national and local elections to 16. Both parties feel that the relationship will enable them to achieve results that may not be possible on their own.'

“I really believe in experiments,” says Nicola Forster, a 37-year-old Swiss social entrepreneur. Society is changing so fast and there are no obvious solutions to many of the problems we face today. “The only way is doing experiments.”

'Since he led his first successful political campaign as a student, Forster became drawn into the world of social entrepreneurship. He co-founded several think tanks and political movements...and won numerous international awards for his contributions to re-thinking citizen engagement at local, national, and international levels.' Souwie Buis writes at the link in our bio!

'Forster has been described as one of the leaders of the new Switzerland – millennials who view their country as a laboratory for experiments in democracy. They come together to build think tanks and work on projects in contrast to the jobs-for-life approach of their parents’ generation. Forster agrees that the way his generation views politics is very different, “It is lighter, less structured and much less tied to traditional institutions.”

"We can’t afford to leave anyone behind when it comes to the climate." - Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr

From our #2050 series, here is what the Mayor of Freetown told us when we asked her what most suprised her about her job:

"That the central government is allowing construction to happen in forest reserves and waterways. Like vaccine inequity, we can’t afford to leave anyone behind when it comes to the climate. But it is shocking that so few see how dire the situation is. How can we get people on board so that they can engage in this movement? We have to keep on doing the right thing, demonstrating what can be done and sharing success stories through networks. This is not a talk show. There is real urgency."

"We cannot achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 without addressing energy poverty. Today, 733 million people lack access to electricity; 2.4 billion lack clean cooking solutions. We are back with our 2050 series this week celebrating our climate warriors in Africa and the Middle East

First up - Didier Sian, who is Secretary General of the Green Heart Foundation, and Head of the Public Procurement Department at the Ministry of Hydraulics, Sanitation and Healthiness in Côte d’Ivoire amongst other ministries.

Here is his take on how we can get more young people into public service:

"By instilling in them, through training, eco-citizen values. This is essential. The environmental crisis has an educational dimension. There is opportunity to put young people in contact with nature so that they learn to love and take care of it. They must be empowered through pragmatic initiatives to share experiences and develop their biosphere consciousness to make them ambassadors concerned about the viability of the planet. My love and respect for nature guided me to my current field of work."

‘As the owner of a business that specializes in renewable energy in rural areas, Enrique Martínez was always aware of the problem of depopulation.

Yet once he began to research the issue …he realized that the problem was one of mindset. He talks about “an invisible wall” that separates Spain’s rural and urban worlds. Mistrust on both sides means that bridging the divide is difficult.’

“A move to the country is viewed by some urbanites as something akin to the explorers of the 16th century,” Martinez tell us with a wry smile.

'Over the past 50 years, rural Spain has lost 28% of its population...a phenomenon known locally as “España vaciada” - empty Spain.'

In our latest article, 'Enrique Martinez explains that national politicians have tended to forget about the needs of the rural dwellers once installed in office in the country’s urban hubs. In addition, they have focused exclusively on economic solutions without taking the social side into account.' Souwie Buis writes.

'Visiting the abandoned stone villages of rural Spain during Christmas 2016 with his youngest son, Enrique Martínez Pomar, recalls his sense of loss and sadness at the emptiness he encountered. Less than 300 km from Madrid, Las Tierras Altas region in the province of Soria feels as if it is a world away from Spain’s busy urban capital.

This visit inspired him to found Project Arraigo in 2017. He has now spent over five years working with local town councils, mayors, and townspeople to develop a new methodology of repopulation. Arraigo means to put down roots in Spanish. Project Arraigo’s goal is to help people put down roots and start a new life in one of the many depopulated towns and villages across Spain.' 'Jill Pay broke through a glass ceiling when she became Britain’s first female Serjeant at Arms of the House of Commons in the position’s 607-year-history.' Andrew Cave writes at the link in our bio

'Jill Pay now chairs The Gender Index, a not-for-profit organization committed to achieving “positive change for women, driven by data”. As a woman whose career has zigzagged across public and private sectors, she is a relentless champion of the need to establish metrics to standardize such progression.

In her four years as Serjeant at Arms, she was at the heart of British pageantry and tradition, also bearing ultimate responsibility to the House of Commons’ Speaker for all access and security. “A lot of people see the uniform and think it’s just about carrying the mace,” she says. “But 80% of my responsibility was for security, which was a huge burden. I was ultimately in charge of security for all the 3,500 people working on the parliamentary estate and the million visitors each year, responsible for the security of the building and the perimeter. Our contingency planning involved a lot of different attack scenarios.'

This week we are kicking off our #2050 Series: Latin America with Costa Rican Climate Warrior Dr. Andrea Meza.

We asked her how she is helping to cool the planet through her work?

"Because transport accounts for more than half of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, it is a focus sector in our National Decarbonization Plan so we can meet our Paris Agreement goals. By 2050, we plan to electrify 85% of our public transportation and 95% of light vehicle fleets, and a highly efficient freight transportation fleet with 20% fewer GHG emissions than in 2018. Moreover, we are integrating the concept of a ‘just transition’ (or a phased decarbonization approach so that all have sufficient time and resources to prepare) and climate justice into our climate policies."

'There’s an immediate and critical gap at the early career talent level for technology talent, and agencies have had limited success being able to fill it.

One principle has been ensuring an inclusive, merit-based strategy, less prone to the biases that lead to unrepresentative hiring...as the IT tech workforce doesn’t yet reflect the full spectrum of experience and diversity in the U.S.

Focusing on skills-based assessment rather than relying on resumes — the new application process includes a take-home project — and an audio rather than video interview..."It’s really important to provide fair, unbiased, and equitable ways to demonstrate your ability", Caitlin Gandhi at the U.S. Digital Corps told us.

The U.S. Digital Corps team also proactively markets their initiative to networks and interest groups of underrepresented communities, tackling an often-under-appreciated diversity issue: lack of awareness about opportunity.' Read the full piece via the link in our bio!
