Frances Elizabeth Bavier is born in New York City on December 14th, 1902. She attends Columbia University and plans to teach after graduation. However, a few acting parts at Columbia steer her toward vaudeville and Broadway.

Her first Broadway appearance is in April 1925 in "The Poor Nut," the start of a successful Broadway career. She travels with the USO to entertain the U.S. troops in the Pacific during World War II. Her last appearance on Broadway is in the 1951 play, "Point of No Return," starring Henry Fonda. It runs for 356 performances.

Frances' first movie is the 1951 science-fiction classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still." She plays a boarder in the rooming house where the alien stays. By coincidence, another boarder in that rooming house is Olan Soule, who will go on to play choir director John Masters in a sleepy little television town called Mayberry. Francis will make many more movies in the '50s, as well as frequent appearances on television as featured characters on shows like It's a Great Life (1954) and The Eve Arden Show (1957).

It is in 1960 that she lands what will become her most famous role, that of Beatrice Taylor, beloved aunt to Sheriff Andy Taylor and his son Opie (Andy Griffith and Ron Howard). Frances will go on to play the loveable, good-hearted Aunt Bee for ten years in the fictional television town of Mayberry, North Carolina, and ON THIS DAY in 1967, she will win an Emmy for her portrayal of Aunt Bee.

Frances never marries and has no children. She will live in her Siler City home, alone, except for her cats...lots of cats, for nearly 17 years. On December 6th, 1989, she dies of a heart attack at the age of 86. Her almost $700,000 estate is left to a hospital foundation.
