Tomorrow, Take Up Space Festival X Mothers without Hands are hosting a public procession in Folkestone and invite you to join 👏

Form midday, meet outside the Folkestone Museum in town.

Folkestone communities are invited to join the Mothers without Hands procession on International Women’s Day to raise awareness and address violence against women and girls.

To mark International Women’s Day 2025, Take Up Space Festival is collaborating with contemporary artist Tereza Buơková to present a powerful protective processional performance through Folkestone. The event will bring together members of the local Czech, Slovak and Roma communities, along with performer Zoe Simon, to explore themes of resilience, cultural heritage, and gender-based violence.

At the heart of the procession will be three ‘bread women’, who will wear baked bread armour and carry handheld totems imbued with magical properties. Folk singer Karolina Wegrzyn will accompany the procession, which will begin with a sand pouring ritual performed by Buơková.

This participatory event is the result of community workshops for women and non-binary people in Folkestone, where participants came together to create the symbolic bread sculptures. It marks the UK launch of Mothers without Hands, an international multidisciplinary art project that will unfold across Folkestone, Birmingham, Walsall, Brno, and Prague throughout 2025.

Folkestone can already seem like a magical place. It’s no surprise that it’s become a home for many children’s authors and illustrators working on bringing that magic to young readers. 📖

In the Foghorn we explore local writers and storytellers - using the wonders of Folkestone as their muse to enthuse young readers.

One such book, The Monkey Stones, written by local Michele Sheldon was released this week - available in bookshops worldwide and even 👏

“A major milestone in the restoration of Folkestone’s historic Leas Lift has been reached! This morning, the two 4.5-tonne carriages were carefully lifted from the tracks by crane and are now on their way for extensive refurbishment.

This is a huge step forward in the project to return this incredible piece of history to working order - thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and public support.”

There’s always something weird for sale,” says Nathan Joyce of Noyce, a new interior design and upcycling shop in Sandgate that’s a family business with his wife Vienna and Vienna’s mum and dad Darrell and Tracy Woodward. The business had its roots in lockdown when Nathan, who used to be a manager for the jewellers H Samuel in London, was put on furlough and took the opportunity to channel his passion and talent for home DIY into laying the foundations for a bespoke cabinetry and furniture-building business.

“Everything is made on site, says Nathan of the dedicated showroom and workspace, “where you can see your kitchen being built from start to finish.” Darrell and Tracy have lent their skills at upcycling and crafting unique art pieces and signs to the business – and they clearly have a good eye for the perfect accessories for Noyce’s rustic kitchen and shelving units.

‘Bring your home into bloom’ is the mantra of artist and product designer Fabia Goff who is going solo with an open studio, shop and gallery. Known for her fabulously floral art, textiles, homeware and patterns on everything from tea towels to tapestries, Fabia will also be showcasing her original lino and digital prints, framed and unframed, as well as textiles and gifts, and sharing her skills through hands-on classes.

The workshop skills Fabia learned at Brunel University on her product design degree came in handy as she (with help from Carole Tuff of Intra Interiors and local poet and photographer ‘Aaron Taylor), transformed the Old High Street shop with a bespoke workshop space and upholstered seating area, painted in sleek Lamp Black and Portland Stone. Apart from her own designs (look out for a new tea towel print featuring the dogs of The Old High Street) Fabia will also be stocking the high-end drawing tools of Makers Cabinet, designed to become heirlooms.

Cavells is an elevated dining addition to the Harbour Arm. The family who run this classy Mediterranean cuisine restaurant are familiar from the much-loved Big Greek Bus that stood on the same site for eight years.

Housed in a pair of expertly restored and reimagined PMVs (Parcel and Miscellaneous Vans), Cavells offers a relaxed, lounge-style dining experience with, from the front, breathtaking views across to the Warren.

Many of their old Greek favourites are on the menu, but a significantly expanded kitchen space now allows for a menu that features dishes from across Lebanon and Syria, including shawarma-style lamb, the flat-bread salad fattoush, and a wide range of hot and cold meze.

Folkestone now has its very own gin. You may have come across the 50ml miniatures of Beach Buoys Gin on sale at Sandgate Deli or sampled the drink at Docker’s Taproom.

The Coastal Dry version is flavoured with a touch of sea salt, while the Coastal Aromatic uses sea buckthorn, and both are made locally in an industrial unit in Cheriton by Peter Bracewell, the founder of the Folkestone Distillery.

Lending the gins a distinctive edge is their packaging in aluminium bottles. “They’re recyclable and better for the environment than glass bottles” says Peter. Moving forward, he’s hoping to add a rum to the product line and has already made a brandy, which is available to taste at their monthly taproom events held at the distillery on the last Friday of the month from 5pm.
