Our Folkestone knitting communities have teamed up with to create Christmas Robins 🎄

“We have connected with many knitting communities in the area to create Christmas Robins, we plan to distribute them in the community during the lead up to Christmas, the premise is to raise the profile of what we do locally as a charity ensuring older persons in our community live later life well and spread some Christmas Cheer to younger generations. As the Robins have been knitted by different communities, the Nepalese, The Poppy Project, Cheriton Library, and our members, we have over 100 ready for flight.” says Lisa

Support a for a major new feature about Folkestone

Blue Has No Borders is a documentary by local filmmakers Jessi Gutch and Charlie Phillips about , and how an English community at the frontline of Britain’s crisis shows we have more in common than what splits us apart.

Filmed over the last 3 years, it’s a picture of how Folkestone weathered an unstable time in local and national identity, the real community story behind the “stop the boats” message. Rather than create a simplistic film about a battle between ‘refugees’ and ‘racists’, it goes beyond the stereotypical labels that we can’t seem to move past.

Because whilst we all increasingly live in our bubbles and online communities, what does it look like when we actually talk to our neighbours who aren’t like us? Before she was murdered by a far right terrorist, MP Jo Cox did a rousing speech in Parliament about how we have more in common than that which divides us. This statement is painted proudly on a wall in the centre of Folkestone, but is it actually true? In Blue Has No Borders, Jessi meets 6 characters embodying hope for a community of messy inclusivity and English identity, traversing racial, political, and class borders, urging audiences to think about what compassion and community really mean.

The team need your support to finish the film so they can bring Folkestone and its amazing community to the world at film festivals and screenings, and are trying to raise £40,000 over 30 days on Kickstarter. You can support them through links in their profiles to donate: &

Sooner or later death comes to everyone, but how we deal with our inevitable demise is something artists Chloe Osborne and Steven Aron Williams intend to explore with their Mortal Made Residency from 7 to 10 November at the Urban Room/Mugs cafe at the foot of Tontine Street.

Bringing together artists, writers, death practitioners, therapists and performers, they will create an inclusive space for anyone and everyone to explore loss, collective grieving, plus curiosity and fear of endings.

There will be opportunities to make art and exit plans, holding spaces that don’t privilege speaking over other forms of expression.

“It’s a chance to work through the British death taboo with subversive acts of moving and making,” says Steven.

For a Day of the Dead twist, there will also be a mezcal bar and tattoo parlour in the evening.

“The residency will end with a Great Wake, offering Death Bingo and Mortal Raving to celebrate life and those no longer with us,” adds Chloe.

It’s that time of year when Folkestone comes over all spooky. Who you gonna call? The Real Kent Ghostbusters, that’s who! These cosplaying superfans of the movie franchise will be roaming The Bayle and The Old High Street on 2 and 3 November between 11am and 5pm for the annual Halloween Scavenger Hunt.

“The idea is that you track down the ‘haunted shops’ along The Old High Street,” says Hannah Richardson, one of the event’s organisers, “take part in the activities on offer there and collect eight ghost tokens to get a gift bag from us at R&R Jewellery.” Thanks to Hannah’s Comic Con connections, the ECTO 1 Ghostbusters car will also be in town. Grab a selfie with this iconic movie prop, then head over to The Bayle Pond Gardens for games, crafts and activities, including a pumpkin competition and a spider-web assault course. This free community event is organised by The Bayle Residents Association, The Independent Shopkeepers of TOHS, Kent County Council and The Real Kent Ghostbusters.
