Form midday, meet outside the Folkestone Museum in town.
Folkestone communities are invited to join the Mothers without Hands procession on International Womenâs Day to raise awareness and address violence against women and girls.
To mark International Womenâs Day 2025, Take Up Space Festival is collaborating with contemporary artist Tereza BuĆĄkovĂĄ to present a powerful protective processional performance through Folkestone. The event will bring together members of the local Czech, Slovak and Roma communities, along with performer Zoe Simon, to explore themes of resilience, cultural heritage, and gender-based violence.
At the heart of the procession will be three âbread womenâ, who will wear baked bread armour and carry handheld totems imbued with magical properties. Folk singer Karolina Wegrzyn will accompany the procession, which will begin with a sand pouring ritual performed by BuĆĄkovĂĄ.
This participatory event is the result of community workshops for women and non-binary people in Folkestone, where participants came together to create the symbolic bread sculptures. It marks the UK launch of Mothers without Hands, an international multidisciplinary art project that will unfold across Folkestone, Birmingham, Walsall, Brno, and Prague throughout 2025.
