Hey, Nicola again here.

For Season 3, Episode 2 our Top Five theme is School 🏫.

Rosie and I sat down with our brand new pencil cases, stared into space while flicking our pens on the desk and watching the clock … and then found that a ton of songs on this theme came tumbling out!

One of my top five tracks is Lessons by from her 2019 album Lessons in Love. It has a soothing acoustic guitar riff and showcases her beautiful voice.

What’s your favourite song about school? We’ve done our homework, and all our Top Five tracks and notable mentions are on the episode playlist on Spotify.

Have we missed any? Scribble your answer below. ✏️

Love, Nicola x

Hi, Nicola here 👋

For Season 3, Episode 2 I asked Rosie to listen to Steve Lacy’s Gemini Rights.

At the time, every morning I’d pass a HUGE red poster about the album, with all the top magazines giving it 4-5 stars ⭐️, so I took it as a sign I needed to listen to it.

Steve is an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer who
gained recognition as the guitarist of the Internet. He’s collaborated with Frank Ocean and Tyler, the Creator and co-wrote songs for Solange Knowles,Chloe and Kendrick Lamar.

Gemini Rights is his second full-length and you can find out what Rosie and I thought of it by tuning in to the episode 😊

Our theme this episode is heat and if there's one song that makes me feel like summer has arrived it's...DRUMS PLEASE...

Jazzy Jeff &the Fresh Prince - Summertime.

Not just the Kool and the Gang sample or memories of the video, it's the whole laid back feel and those lyrics... Oh those lyrics! Apparently Will Smith wrote them in an airport whilst waiting for a delayed flight.

There are so many brilliant lines, every time I think it might be one, I decide it's a different one that's my favourite!

It's over 30 years old and is from their 4th studio album - I didn't know they'd released so many tbh, but what I really don't remember is the album art, did we have a different one in the UK? I'm sure I would have remembered this beaut.

This will be on the radio well hear it blasting through open car windows and it will feature at BBQs all over the summer - it's the way that people respond to summer madness 😜

Stay cool, friends, love Rosie ###

Hello, friends! 👋

It's been a little while, but it's a warmer than ever welcome to Season 2, Episode 20 from your hosts, Nicola and Rosie.

It's fantastic to have you with us!

For Music Club this week we listened to legendary soul singer Bobby Womack's The Poet II (featuring the Godmother of Soul, Patti LaBelle) and treated ourselves to Volume 1 of American rapper and producer Guru's experimental series, Jazzmatazz.

After rummaging around the back of the sofa and finally finding the remote, we compiled a Top Five of tracks about Television.

With a choice of artists that includes Blur, Gil Scott-Heron and IDLES you definitely will not want to switch off 📺

It's very likely our music memories and interests match yours. So please, pull up a chair or pop in your headphones and join in the chat with us.

Listen, like, subscribe, tell your mates, sing the bit of the song where you don't know the words or dance like everyone is actually watching - we'd really appreciate your support.

All the songs we talk about can be found on the Spotify playlist in the episode description 🎶

Contact us with your thoughts about any of the music we feature - we're always up for suggestions for future Music Club albums or Top Five.

Lots of love,

Nicola and Rosie xx

One of our hosts, , was recently asked to be a guest on the podcast , hosted by .

“They pick 'em, then talk about 'em!”

Matt sits down with a guest to chat about an album of their choice; be it an all-time favourite or one they just can't stop listening to.

The outcome? Guaranteed positive talk about the music people love.

What a great idea!

You may be surprised to know that Nicola picked a Foo Fighters album (😂) - The Colour and The Shape, their second album from 1997.

It was a great discussion with Matt; and also quite reflective as she shared how songs from this album have become linked to key milestones in her life (first date, marriage ceremony, honeymoon, pregnancy to name a few!), as well as her experience of joining thousands of grieving fans at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert in September.

Matt also very kindly shouted out to Pause and Play it Forward and that he enjoys listening to it 😊

Spotify link below, or you can search for Pick A Disc wherever you listen to your podcasts.

Matt has curated a brilliant Pick a Disc Hall of Fame playlist, comprised of tracks nominated by his podcast guests from their chosen album.

Everlong, Nicola’s favourite Foos track, will be forever immortalised on this playlist

Pick a Disc is a proud part of the We Made This podcast network - and is well worth a listen.

I love this album, it's called Gifted and is by Koffee.

It's from this year, by a girl as old as the century but sounding like she has lived many more times round the sun than that.

Give it a listen if you haven't already! While you're at it give episode 14 a listen, we talk about this album and something from a genius...

Actually, it's by John Denver but the version I first fell in love with was the Peter Paul and Mary version. Boring fact: seems like most people feel the same as it wasn't a hit til Peter Paul and Mary recorded it.

My Nanny Bett and Grandad Wally had an album by Peter Paul and Mary and I borrowed it from them and LOVED it. This song was on it, as well as Puff the Magic Dragon which I can no longer listen to since sobbing uncontrollably at the lyrics when I was pregnant with my younger daughter and my elder daughter had to comfort me. She was 2.

John Denver says Leaving on a Jet Plane is a lonely song about leaving someone you love, but it never felt like that to me. It feels to me like they are looking forward to returning to the things they love.

And for me that's one of the things I look forward to at the end of being away. Don't get me wrong, I love the adventure of being away but the silver linings of the going home cloud are things like the taste of water from the tap at home, my favourite mug/tea/chair, seeing friends. I try not to think of the inevitable washing mountain 😂

Leaving on a Jet Plane was the first song I thought of for this episode's Top 5, it's up there with my all time favourites - I hope you like it too.

All the songs can be found on our Spotify playlist, link in bio.

Anyway, taxi's waiting, blowing his horn! Rosie ######xx

Hello, it’s Nicola 👋

For Season 2, Episode 10 our Top Five theme was Age. I loved this one 😊

Candi Staton’s “I’d Rather Be an Old Man’s Sweetheart (Than a Young Man’s Fool) from 1969 was definitely in my selection.

This soul and funk track, just like Candi, is pure class.

Over 50 years later, it still sounds fresh - it never ages.

That’s what you call timeless music ❤️💜

Can you think of any tracks about age that we should add to the playlist?

Love, Nicola xx

22/03/2022

Our top 5 theme for episode 8 of season 2 was cooking, and this song was my oven to 200 degrees hot choice.

Released in 1992 it was when the UK was still gripped by Australian amour, Neighbours was regularly getting millions of listeners (although not the 19 million at its peak in 1990) and Kylie and Jason were household names. The Australian soaps are even blamed for bringing the rising inflection to England 🙄

But Crowded House were different, from New Zealand and Australia for a start and their music was just so good. They just seemed to be musicians, not stars, and I loved them.

I was in Melbourne when they did their Sydney Opera House farewell gig in 1996 and couldn't quite make it, but I watched it on TV, loving it.

This was really a rather dubious insertion into my top 5 as the only relevant lyrics are 'things ain't cooking in my kitchen' but I'll take that as I'll take any excuse to put them into a PAPIF episode!

Lots of love, Rosie ###x

It was my absolute delight to ask Nicola to listen to this album from Moonchild on a favourite label of mine

Starfruit is one of those albums I'll be listening to for years, I feel like it's been with me a long time, not just the time I've been playing it.

As often happens when an album is being released, the fantastic promo team at Tru Thoughts sent me a few singles from it first and I couldn't stop playing them. I was smitten at first listen.

This album fills me with hope and light, makes me want to stretch my limbs like a cat and lie languorously in the sunshine or drink a glass of cool lemonade in the shade.

Nicola said she needed more time to listen and I understand that, sometimes music creeps up on you and sometimes it's an instant hit.

Give this one a go, though, and I hope you like it, and find out what we thought of it in episode 8 of season 2.

Lots of love Rosie ###xx

Hey PAPIF pals ⏸️▶️⏩ how're you doing?

Rosie here 👋 and this album was my Music Club choice for this week. It's Three Dimensions Deep by Amber Mark.

I've listened to this album A LOT. actually constantly might be a more accurate description. It got under my skin so much that I wake up singing one of the songs (What it is FYI 😊)

really likes it too - I think it helps that on the musical spectrum, this type of music really hits the spot for both of us, but I honestly think that even if you don't like soulful melodies and beautiful vocals (err firstly you need to have a word with yourself, but...) you'll find something really special about this album.

Take a listen to episode 7 of season 2 and find out a bit more about the album if you're not ready to dive straight in.

Love, Rosie ###x

Hello 👋 this is Rosie and (season 2) episode 6's Top 5 theme has got to be one of my favourite yet.

Let me tell you how it happened.... I was watching the video to 'They Don't Know' by Tracey Ullman and look who has a cameo! Only Sir Paul! Now, I need a regular dose of this song, but haven't seen the video for AGES.

When I was a kid I had this brilliant video on a compilation I'd recorded from Top of the Pops on our betamax and having Paul McCartney feature didn't seem like a big deal (the most familiar song to me by him at that time was probably the Frog Chorus - also on said betamax compilation) he was as just a pal in her video. But this has surely got to be the best cameo in a music video of all time?

So Nicola and I set about searching for the best cameos we could find for our Top 5 this episode.

What are your favourites? Listen to find out our final top 5.

It feels like this weekend has been full of days like this. These lyrics are from Holly Humberstone's song Scarlett, which you can hear on one of our Music Club albums for this week. When I was listening these lyrics stood out to me but I didn't realise quite how relevant they were about to be 🌬️

Hello! Rosie here 👋 feeling all nostalgic.

The theme for our top 5 in episode 4 was 'House' and we came up with loads of songs, but both Nicola and I had this one, so it went straight in to our combined Top 5 for the episode.

I started by saying it's not my favourite song in the world, but when Nicola said about these lyrics and how it reminded her of growing up, I had a massive moment of fondly remembering how busy our house was when I was a teenager.

There was always someone on the phone, plans being made, people staying over, popping in, going out, coming in before going out... I'm surprised my parents didn't get really fed up with all the extra people we invited over!

These lyrics reminded me of such a happy time, and it does Nicola too. The power of music; one line transports us back in time.

And that's one of the things that made us want to create PAPIF - to be transported to happy times.

Here's to creating some more happy memories for our future selves! I hope your week is going well, that the sun will shine now February has landed, and remember to Pause and Play it Forward 😊

Oh, how I love Aretha Franklin, and to have this AND I Say a Little Prayer on the flip side 😍

This song and all the ones we mention for this episode are on our playlist (we compile a new one for each episode with all the tracks on both albums in Music Club, plus any Ransome mentions as well!)

This album is called Fragments and it's by a long-time favourite of mine, Bonobo.

I first discovered him about 20 years ago and it does like he's loved by many others too- the live dates seem to be seeking like hot cakes.

You can hear loads of influences in this album, and to be honest I've loved it. It's great to have on in the background but I've also enjoyed a bit more intensive listening too.

I hope you like it - the review in NME said they thought the album was great now but it will really come into its own in the summer, and I agree; I think it is set to be a summer favourite for 2022.

Hello Rosie here 👋 and for our Top 5 in episode 3 this week we compiled a list of 5 songs about being late.

Anyone who knows me knows I am never on time (even though I got rhythm - thanks Massive Attack for those lyrics... Anyway...) I hate being late, but just can't help it.

And the first song I thought of is from my favourite album ever (Tapestry) by Carole King - it's too late.

What a song!

But my introduction to this song was not this version but the Quartz and Dina Caroll one from 1991, and NO JOKE, Dina Caroll's music has been stalking me this week: 3 different people have mentioned her to me AND I was in the garden centre yesterday and her songs were playing on repeat (it was a good sing and stroll around the perennials!)

Both the songs are on our Spotify playlist for this episode and you can listen to our podcast wherever you usually listen 😊
