I am an Indie Filmmaker

I have been a professional filmmaker for the past 10+ years since I graduated from university in 2008 and I consider myself to be lucky for the opportunities that came my way.

My experience includes holding executive level positions at international sales and distribution companies, working on large multi-million dollar commercial sets and Emmy-nominated TV shows, acting as an EP for feature films, and, yes, I was even a script reader for the infamous Weinstein Company 🤮.

My biggest takeaway from all this is, “The industry is weird.”

It truly is a game. And like all games you have to be willing to learn the rules and play it in order to win.

But what happens if you’ve read the rules and decide it’s not for you? It’s not the game you want to play.

All this is to say, I am an indie filmmaker. I just am. I’ve been in the rooms, gone to the meetings, and every time I realize, “this is not where I want to be.”

I want to be in the trenches with my comrades. Putting in the work to create - but REALLY create.

I can’t be so bold as to say that what I intend to create is purely art. But it seems, in my mind, to be more artful than the projects swirling around in the game.

I don’t want to be having conversations about who is in my films and why they aren’t “bankable” for international pre-sales. I don’t want to be talking to companies with $400 million in the bank where the executives are afraid to take leaps because their job is on the line with them. I don’t, quite frankly, want to receive notes from a person in a suit who understands math better than story.

I am an indie filmmaker.

Does that mean I’m destined for mediocrity? Maybe.

Does that mean I never want to work with these big conglomerate content companies? No.

What it does mean, for now, is that I’m ready to make my own game, even if I’m the only one willing to play it.

The industry is broken. I don’t intend to fix it. I can’t fix it. But what I can do, is try to carve out my own section of it - my own oasis in the desolate desert - and build.
