This bad boy is called the octobass. It can play a full octave below a double bass with a c extension, depending on how it's tuned.

A native of South Carolina - Arthur Smith could play guitar, fiddle and banjo. He wrote and recorded "Guitar Boogie" circa 1945. It became very popular and spawned several cover versions including "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" (by Frank Virtue And The Virtues). Arthur became known as Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith and this helped differentiate him from Fiddlin' Arthur Smith. Arthur also wrote and recorded "Feudin' Banjos" in 1955. Years later "Feudin' Banjos" became better known as "Dueling Banjos" and was featured in the 1972 movie Deliverance.
