A rare collection of photographs that are the heart of The Springs of Florida was obtained over a period of many years. They are the result of hundreds of hours underwater, during both day and night, and in all seasons of the year. The many realms of fresh water that most often surround us are dark rivers, clouded ponds and the opaque depths of inland lakes. We cannot see into them or fathom the incessant activities of life that occurs throughout their depths. The many springs that jewel the landscape of Florida are ornate exceptions to an environment often veiled in obscurity. They are translucent openings to a dominion very rare: a crystalline and vibrant world of flowing fresh water that rises from the earth and reaches to the sea.

Now in its fourth edition, The Springs of Florida brings updated research and discussion to readers interested not only in the ecosystem and environment, but also in preserving the springs and the creatures that reside there. Doug Stamm, prominent voice in the Florida springs community and professional diver/underwater photographer, aims to increase awareness about springs conservation as well as bring new updates to light in his text. With a combination of legacy and new photos throughout the book, readers will see first-hand how beautiful the springs are and learn why conservation efforts are needed now more than ever.

Transforming Florida Yards by Amanda Pike offers readers a way to easily grow edible plants by creating a natural ecosystem. All one needs to successfully begin their food forest is a lawn and this book! Knowing which plants grow in each part of the state (north, central, and south) simplifies steps to create a flourishing garden. Permaculture, or the process of working with nature rather than against it, teaches affordable, sustainable, and research-based ways to beautify surroundings. Backyard gardens also lower the risk of food insecurity and help prepare communities for continuous climate change.

Thanks to ample rainfall and warm temperatures, Florida is the perfect state for growing produce, herbs, and other edibles year-round. Most plants in a food forest are long-lived and low maintenance. Often, food forests even take care of their own fertilization and pest control!

Empowered with easy-to-follow, one-page reference sheets for 200 plants (with corresponding hardiness zone, recipes, cultural information, and landscaping design tips), readers will quickly watch their lawns transform into a gorgeous, yet edible paradise.

Secrets of the Manatee offers a fascinating look at Florida’s most mysterious marine creature. Floating just below the surface of the water, manatees have remained largely unknown and misunderstood by humans. Now, their very survival depends on a delicate balance between human interference and conservation. This book is written for people who care about manatees, who want to learn about them, and, ultimately, who want to save them.

This book explores the evolutionary history and fascinating biology of the manatee, asking questions such as, why do they have solid bones and marching molars? Big tummies but no blubber? Lots of friends and no enemies? And other queries like, are manatees invasive? Do they speak or squeak? Why do they have whiskers? Are they dangerous? How can we help them thrive again? This book answers these—and many more—questions about this very special mammal.

In Discovering Florida’s Coast, Doug Alderson, popular Florida writer and successful Pineapple Press author, delves into what makes each section of the state’s coast different. Addison Mizner’s Mediterranean-style mansions are much-admired Florida icons, where even today you can find many homes modeled with stucco walls and tiled roofs. In the paperback release of Boca Rococo, Caroline Seebohm’s successful biography on the flamboyant architect is more accessible now than ever as it reaches more readers interested in the man himself.

Mizner had global experience from San Francisco to China during his early days, before landing in New York and eventually, South Florida. He had no formal training but did possess natural talent, establishing him as architect of the rich and famous. His designs made the city of Palm Beach one of America’s most elegant resort spots—and fed his dream of developing a “Venice-on-the-Ocean” in nearby Boca Raton. Mizner’s plans ended with the collapse of Florida’s real estate boom. He died in 1933, broken and bankrupt.

With inspiration from and inclusion of never-before-seen material like floor plans and autobiographical works, and a new foreword written by the author, Seebohm gives readers a complete view of Mizner as one of the greatest architects and more flamboyant Americans.

More about Sunrise:
“With a moonless sky this early morning, it is eerily dark out here, and I can feel the weight of the hot and humid South Florida air. As I head toward the sound of the rolling ocean surf ahead of me, the soft beach sand shifts beneath my feet, making it hard for me to walk while balancing my two cameras and a heavy tripod. Even though I go out like this virtually every morning, it never gets old, and once again I am starting to get excited. I can even feel my breathing increase as I approach the shoreline. These are all welcome signs that I’m fully alive right now and am engaged in what I call “magic time.” It’s that ungodly hour of the day when most normal people are still safely at home, asleep in their comfortable beds––blissfully unaware that they are on the verge of missing out on one of the best lightshows on all of planet earth: The tropical sunrise!” ––Mark Potter

It is the unvarnished truth that all of Mark Potter’s bright and colorful sunrise photographs began from tragedy and grief, and were taken in memory of his wife who died from cancer. But as miracles sometimes have it, the images turned out to be the exact opposite of the way they began. They are upbeat and exciting, but also comforting and calming while capturing the natural world of Florida as it awakens to each new day with not only sunrises, but also seascapes, wildlife, marine life, flora, and fauna.

Florida's Coast-to-Coast Trail Guide by Nanci J. Adler is a guidebook designed specifically for the 250-mile dedicated bicycle/pedestrian trail that provides an uninterrupted cross-Florida trail from Titusville to St. Petersburg. The trail (over 80% complete and to be completed by 2025) already attracts not only local cyclists and walkers, but also out-of-state cycling enthusiasts. This book provides readers with a broad background of the communities through which they will travel.

Although maps are included, this is not a detailed "how-to" guide, nor does it provide extensive lodging, camping or restaurant information; much of that information changes frequently and can be easily obtained via online searches. Instead, this book focuses on interesting cultural and natural aspects of the route. By highlighting the local flavor of small towns, the beauty of natural Florida, as well as local historical events, this book will introduce readers to the uniqueness of Florida.

Distinctive features covered in the book include the Greek heritage of Tarpon Springs, Winter Garden's thriving downtown based on its citrus and bass-fishing past, Titusville's role in space exploration, and St. Petersburg’s lively waterfront and flourishing art scene. Also covered is the natural world of beautiful freshwater springs, moss-shrouded oak trees, and migratory birds found in protected areas along the trail such as Gemini Springs Park, Brooker Creek Preserve and the Green Swamp. In addition, readers will be introduced to important historical Florida figures such as civil rights leaders Harry T. and Harriett V. Moore and Russian entrepreneur and railway builder Peter Demens.

FORGOTTEN FLORIDA by Clarissa Thompson, tells the story of the Florida peninsula from the Adams-Onis Treaty in 1819 up to the beginning of the Second Seminole War in 1835. The story is told from the perspective of well-documented men who took part in the development of the Gulf coastal areas from Pensacola to Key West and include Commodore David Porter, Colonel James Gadsden, Colonel George Brooke, Colonel Duncan Clinch, and Major Francis Dade as well as Captain William Bunce of the Aristocrat and Captain Fred Tresca of the Margaret Ann—both of whom sailed the Gulf coast from Key West to Pensacola and served to connect the various settlements.

The book begins with the New York lawyer, Richard Hackley, who had been a consul in Cadiz, Spain, and had—purchased the entire west side of Florida from the Spanish Duke Alagon, who had received it as a gift from King Ferdinand of Spain before the peninsula had been given to the United States for the forgiveness of Ferdinand’s five-million-dollar debt to the U.S. Believing the purchase to be legal, Richard Hackley sends his son, Robert, to the Tampa Bay area to set up a homestead and open the land to settlement. Braving the pirate-ridden waters surrounding Key West and fall storms, Hackley arrives at Tampa Bay and builds a plantation home in November 1823.

Heading to Pensacola for supplies in late December, Hackley returns to Tampa Bay to discover that—following the Treaty of Moultrie Creek—the U.S. Army had designated the same area in which he has built his home as a base on the western side of the new Seminole territory and has taken over his home and land for Cantonment Brooke. Action continues from the new base to the building of Tallahassee, the establishment of Key West, and the settlement of Sanibel Island—with the Hackley family attempting to settle and sell their land—during the Seminole unrest threatening the territory culminating with the massacre of Major Dade’s Companies on December 28, 1835, and the beginning of the second Seminole War.

Congratulations to Doug Alderson, whose wonderful book Florida's Rivers: A Celebration of Over 40 of the Sunshine State's Dynamic Waterways was the recipient of TWO gold medals at the recent annual Florida Authors and Publishers Assocation conference—in Adult General Nonfiction and Coffee Table Book!

The rivers in Florida are steeped in a rich natural and cultural history. They are avenues through time, allowing us to wrap ourselves in a rich historical tapestry, and they are showcases for wildlife and natural beauty. On some rivers, idyllic scenes are revealed bend after bend for miles and sometimes days, appearing to have changed little since early native people plied the waters in dugout canoes.

Imagine gliding along a clear watercourse beneath a leafy canopy of maple, cypress, and gum. The current swirls eelgrass in undulating patterns as schools of silvery mullet shoot past. Ahead, a manatee’s snout breaks the surface in a loud whoosh, its gray body lumbering slowly along and showing little fear as you pass by. A red-shouldered hawk cries and soars over treetops while a black anhinga stretches long wings to dry while perched on a cypress knee.

Whether you are viewing a river from the land or, especially, a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard, let Florida's Rivers be your guide to celebrating the state's treasures.

Tate Barkley returns to 1870s Florida after ten years on the Western frontier. He's the kind of man trouble just naturally seems to find, and to tell the truth, he's gotten sort of used to it by now. But Big Bill Caton and his three dozen renegades are more trouble than Tate figured on. Before his run-in with the Caton bunch, he'd halfway thought about settling down in the Florida Panhandle where he grew up. Now it seems like a better idea just to keep on riding. That is, until Tate meets Eileen McClanahan, a widow with a couple of kids, who is trying to hold on to her place on the Florida Gulf coast.

He is quickly drawn into an adventure that involves defending a young woman indentured to the powerful and treacherous James Tyrone. MacKenzie and Becky Campbell set out across the untamed Florida wilderness, accompanied by a crusty sailor named Blackpool Bobby and Jeremiah, a bounty hunter. As they move toward buried gold, Tyrone’s murderous trackers pursue all three, resulting in a showdown on the windswept sands of the Florida Gulf Coast.

Peek Tillman has grown up in the Florida backcountry and knows that as he does his job of herding cattle to market across the big prairie to the east of the Gulf's Charlotte Harbor, he has to be on the lookout for wild beasts and poisonous reptiles—as well as predators of the human variety.

But this time he encounters more than he can figure how to handle, namely a very beautiful young woman, married (unfortunately for Peek) to a real-live archaeologist down from the Northeast, not to mention some greedy outlaws set on taking advantage of the situation. Joined by Chekita Joe, a fierce frontiersman who knows the Florida wilderness even better than Peek, the young cowhand sets out to rescue the Yankees from what he believes is a doomed expedition.

Guess what? It's World Carnivorous Plants Day! In celebration, we wanted to tell you about this exciting upcoming book, Florida's Carnivorous Plants: Understanding, identifying, and Cultivating the State's Native Species by Kenny Coogan!

Learn about Florida's endemic carnivorous plants in this exciting book written for the budding naturalist and hobbyist. Florida has dozens of native species of carnivorous plants––more than any other state in the United States—including sundews, butterworts, bladderworts, and pitcher plants. These plants use appealing scents, leaves, and sticky fluids to trap and imprison insects. Digestive fluids then absorb the prey giving the plant its nutrients. Many of these plants can be grown at home in the backyard, in rain gardens, or in some cases on the windowsill.
Florida’s Carnivorous Plants provides an identification and growing guide for the major genera of carnivorous plants found in Florida. Each species description includes etymology, a history of the plant’s discovery highlighting diverse scientists, anatomy, habitat range, and popular cultivars for beginners. Tables include soil requirements, types of potting, water level, amount of light, dormancy and temperature requirements, and propagation tips. A glossary provides readers with the tools to learn botanical jargon to improve their identification skills.
