For an industry that claims it wants to make progress, fashion seems hesitant to make big moves towards sustainability. February is the first Fashion Month of the year. So you would think that during one of the biggest times for fashion during the year, we’d see more designers promoting sustainability and lots of events promoting sustainable fashion. While some of the major fashion weeks in Europe are making big strides, NYFW seems like it’s falling behind.

Sometimes in fashion, sustainability can seem like an afterthought. Not for Marchetti Sustainable; it’s part of its core. Marchetti makes genderless ready-to-wear exclusively from sustainable fabrics in Guadalajara, México. The brand’s signature textile art is done entirely in-house and by hand with low impact, water-based inks. And both the fabrics they use and the clothing they produce are made in conditions that support people and the planet. [ 636 more words ]

What’s in a fabric? Shopping mindfully starts with understanding the materials that go into our clothing and selecting those that are good for us and the planet. But that’s easier said than done. Choosing an eco-friendly fabric is complex—there are pros and cons to each one. And fiber choice is only part of the equation. When looking at the sustainability of a fabric, there are four things to keep in mind: [ 588 more words ]

“I’m surprised to see this same attitude is still in a lot of our professors (sustainability as a trend)—the university and the industry need a mentality change. The ones who are the readiest for that change are the students. We shouldn’t be seen just as designers; we are also innovators,” Jayanti Tiwari, a recent graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and finalist for the prestigious Liz Claiborne Award told in her latest article "Are Fashion Schools Encouraging Sustainability?"

With the increasing pressure due to consumer expectations concerning ethical and sustainable production, the next generation of fashion designers have their work cut out for them. Now more than ever, new and emerging designers are putting green practices at the foundation of their companies and various long-established brands have changed their business models to incorporate sustainability. This is no longer a trend; it is a new playing field, and the next wave of fashion designers have to be problem solvers as well as artists.

So, are fashion schools catching up to the new standard?

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, every fashion brand and retailer has been forced to pivot at some point or another. For some brands that meant slightly adjusting product to encompass more leisurewear, and for others it meant a complete change of strategy. For The Canvas by Querencia, it meant pivoting to digital. Previously, the Brooklyn-based ethical fashion retail platform only had two brick-and-mortar retail locations in Williamsburg and Amsterdam. [ 543 more words ]

Humans and our natural spaces coexist to make up our world. We influence these natural spaces as much as they influence us. And so, as we create strategies and initiatives for the protection of these spaces we must consider this relationship. We must bring social justice into the equation. For how can we fight for the environmental injustices if we don’t fight for the people they impact the most?

For the rest of this week we’ll be sharing BIPOC voices, businesses, and organizations in the environmental movement to in this space. If you have anyone you want to share, send us a DM.

Enough is enough. Here at SOPHRO, we believe in justice, equality, love, and kindness. While we usually talk about these in relation to the environment, we believe ALL living things deserve them. All living things includes every human being on this earth, regardless of skin color, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or beliefs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So let’s stand with our Black brothers and sisters. Not just this week, but everyday. Let’s show up for them. Let’s take action. Like many, we don’t have all the answers, but we strive to educate ourselves, support the causes we believe in, and do our best to be the change we want to see. And we encourage you to do the same!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re looking for ways you can get involved right now, here are a few:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- VOTE for those who support change and justice for ALL
- Sign the petition (text Floyd to 55156)
- Sign the Justice for Floyd petition on change.org
- Follow BIPOC to hear their stories and learn from them how you can help. Here are a few we encourage you to follow: .cargle
- Donate if you are able to. Here are a few places we suggest:
- Speak up when you hear and see something wrong. Use your voice when others’ won’t be heard
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like in our fight for climate justice, if we want to achieve racial justice we must all fight together. We hope that you stand with us.

Whether you’re breaking a sweat or, downward do***ng it, or just lounging about, leggings are the quarantine pants of choice. And if you’re like us, you’re probably tired of wearing the same pair of leggings every day of the week (and they’re probably tired of being worn every day too). So if you’re on the market for a new pair or a new sports bra, tank, or any clothes you can sweat (consciously, of course) in, here is a roundup of some of our favorite sustainable activewear brands out there. We know there are tons of new activewear brands on the market, so if we missed any of your faves, tag them in the comments below!

26/05/2020

If you bought something yesterday or are planning to while Memorial Day sales continue throughout the week, we urge you to really THINK about your purchase (especially if you haven’t bought it yet). If even for a second you’re worried about sizing or fit or think there’s a possibility you might return it, don’t buy it. Over 5 billion (yep BILLION) pound of returns end up in landfills in the US alone each year. You might think that your returns go right back to the shelf, but that’s not always the case—only about 50% do. The other percentage is often sent back to the manufacturer or other companies that will sell it at deep discounts.

If you want to reduce the environmental impact of your returns, here’s what you can do:
- Return items sooner. The longer you wait, the less likely it’s going to be put back in stock to resell.
- Take your items to a collection center for returns instead of just shipping it off
- Only order what you need, instead of buying multiple options

And now for our last eco-anxiety tip ( #🖐🏻): take action and make some change. This can be done in so many different ways, and it allows you to take back the power and use your concern for the environment to do good. Join a protest. Use your vote to elect representatives who push a green agenda. Volunteer your time for a beach or park cleanup or to work with a green organization. Share facts and hold companies accountable on social media. Protest with your purchases and buy from companies that align with your eco-values. No matter what you do, do something! You may be worried the actions of one won’t do anything, but they can spark change in others which will make all the difference 🌿💚

Eco-anxiety tip 4: reconnect with nature. Remember, if you’re worrying about the environment and its future, it means you friggin care about nature. So turn away from your screens and disconnect from the news for a little bit and get outside, reconnect with what we’re all fighting for. Whether that’s something as simple as taking a walk around your neighborhood or as extreme as a total digital detox out in the wilderness (do what is valuable for you and still safe during this time), getting some fresh air can really help you ground yourself.

Eco-anxiety tip numero tres: practice regular relaxation techniques like yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation. They will help to reduce your stress levels, and provide you with ways to cope when your stress levels are high. Let yourself recognize these feelings of eco-anxiety as reasonable and necessary, and instead of pushing them away or panicking, deal with them in a calm and reflective way.

Eco-anxiety tip ✌🏻: find your community. There are definitely a bunch of online communities, organizations, charities, and PEOPLE out there that are all fighting for climate change. Finding which one is right for you will require a little research, but we guarantee that there is one out there for you. Humans thrive off of connection, so finding people that you can talk to about your concerns and bond with over similar viewpoints will be extremely beneficial for you and your psyche. It will prove that you are not alone in your feelings and thoughts, and hey, they might turn into some lifelong friends 👫

Remember those tips for dealing with eco-anxiety that we talked about the other day? Well here they are. Our first tip: educate yourself. Staying informed and up to date on environmental news, policies, legislation, and lingo will not only help you know what is and isn’t total BS, it can make you feel less anxious when talking about climate change (bc now you know a hella ton).

Pro tip: don’t take everything you read for face value. Some news sources will use sensationalist language to capture readers. Make sure you’re getting your news from reliable sources. Question what you’re reading. Research studies and find data. When you dig deeper, you’ll control the information you consume, which can make everything feel a little less overwhelming.

For places to start educating yourself, here are some amazing resources (that aren’t us 😉):

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we wanted to make sure that we didn’t skip over one of the anxieties that is steadily increasing: eco-anxiety. But what is it?

In 2017, the American Psychological Association defined eco-anxiety as “chronic fear of environmental doom.” Subtle, right? Essentially it means that you have fear over the current and future state of the environment and the effects of climate change.

There is no clinical diagnosis for eco-anxiety, but that doesn’t means these fears aren’t real. In fact, doctors say that for most people having eco-anxiety is a healthy response to the climate crisis.

Eco-anxiety, like any and all anxieties, will present itself differently for each person. But for many, it comes with the thoughts that there is nothing more we can do, that the end is inevitable, and/or our actions will make little to no difference.

This week we will be sharing resources and and strategies for managing eco-anxiety, and flipping the switch from anxious to ACTIVATED. Because we CAN make a difference, and we nees everyone’s (that includes YOU) help.

There’s nothing quite like a good self-care night, with a good show queued up on the TV, a glass of wine in hand, and face mask on (🙌). There’s something just so satisfying about treating yourself and your skin to something luxurious every now and then—or making it a weekly routine. But, as with all beauty products, not all masks are created equal. [ 1,066 more word ]

As brands work to become more sustainable, one avenue they explore is running their warehouses and facilities using renewable energy. What does that look like, though?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are various sources of renewable energy, and all of their costs and availability differ. So what may be renewable energy for one brand, won’t work for another. Each renewable source has its own benefits, but because it’s still a relatively new industry, they also have their limitations.

“If It Can’t Be Reduced” was a jingle written by late American folk singer and social activist Pete Seeger. In the 1960s, he re-emerged on the public scene as a prominent singer of protest music in support of international disarmament, civil rights, and environmental causes. The lyrics were taken verbatim from a zero-waste resolution passed by the city council of Berkeley, California in 2005.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if we asked these questions before making anything?

09/05/2020

Today is World Fair Trade Day. We’re sure you’ve heard the term ‘fair trade’ before—a lot of times you’ll see the label put on your coffee or chocolate or even clothing. But what exactly does it mean?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fair trade is a global movement that seeks improve the lives of workers and small producers, especially those within developing economies, by asserting their rights and raising their visibility within international trade. Today's global market enables—often encourages—compromise at the expense of producers, farmers, workers, and businesses. The fair trade system enables these people to have more control over their lives and decide how to invest in their future.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Products that are fair trade certified means that producers and businesses have met internationally agreed standards that have been independently certified. By buying these products, you can ensure that the workers who made them are working in safe conditions; are receiving enough income to invest in their lives and their work; are given a voice in their workplace and their community; will have higher individual and community well-being; and are keeping traditions alive that work to protect the environment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
World Fair Trade Day was created by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) in 2004 as a tangible contribution to the fight against the harm put upon today’s makers and producers. If you want to take part in this special day, research the work conditions of people around the world, raise awareness among your community, donate to a fair trade cause, or make a pledge to buy more fair trade in the future.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What do you think about the fair trade system? Do any of your favorite brands or shops carry fair trade products?
