Been a week now and thinking back about the day of the eclipse. I was fortunate to be in South Texas (Maverick County) at the Paloma where I do wing shooting instruction. The clouds were thick but thinned out at the right time. The day was filled with good food, great people, and fun hunting and fishing. My friends the Green Bros. had great success with the turkeys including a first spring Rio for Charlie. Later Charlie finished the day with a fantastic Largemouth for a single day, eclipse blast & cast!
Very good times.

Peaceable Hill Farm has a new one for the stable! This is 8-week-old Bandit with his owner/operator, CJ. Bandit is tri-color English Setter that is, definitely, not shy. Official introduction of both Bandit & CJ coming soon. Peaceable Hill Farm will be posting this little guy's progress this summer as he is prepared for Bandit's apprenticeship this fall.

Strip down and maintenance on one of the Try-Guns. Absolutely love this between the wars London made beauty. It has two cast adjustments for proper fitting. Unfortunately in today's language we only speak of cast at heel, the one place we don't need extra cast, outside of a permanent shoulder, neck or collarbone handicap. The production guns today boast right or left handed casts available at 1/8" cast @ heel. A bunch of hoarse biscuits! At face, where cast is needed, is measuring 1/16" at best. Insignificant. Cast at face can be needed for several reasons but the most common are: full face with narrow pupillary distance and: the two lines of sight not coming together in front of the dominant eye but rather in-between the pupil and bridge of nose. This Try-Gun is set up with 3/8" cast off. typical of someone pointing in front of the tear gland. With this Try-Gun I can sweep the heel back behind the cast at face and also measure 3/8" off. If it were a single cast adjustment Try-Gun, the heel would be at 3/4" off and would hard to anchor inside of the ball of the shoulder.
Remember, the more important cast measurements are at face and toe of the stock.

Techniques that helped you shoot high scores on the clays course this past summer will not help you this fall. Time to change methodologies that work best in the field.

Great Conversation with Bob Owens and His brother, Kevin of Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles.
We talked about the changes in habits and habitats with upland and migratory birds, differences in methodologies in clay vs wing shooting, todays new wing shooter and where they came from and of course, my two favorites, dogs & bird guns.
Very easy listening.

It’s Tail Dragger season Peaceable Hill Farm! Super light single engine planes and pop-up tents are synonymous with hunting and fishing adventures. It reminded me of our 1953 Cessna 170B loaded up with guns and Labradors heading up to our camp on the Tabusintac in New Brunswick. As you can see our camp logo, designed by my father in 1970, is now my Wild Surroundings logo. Those were good times.

Below is a link to this year's Bart Jacob Memorial 16th Annual Youth Turkey Calling Contest. It is a Hoot, eight hoots to be exact!

The 16th annual Bart Jacob Memorial Youth Turkey Calling Contest was held at Kehoe Conservation Camp in Castleton last Saturday. Seven Days’ Eva Sollberger met some of the competitors and got a lesson in turkey calls.

Even though I boast that we are in the banana belt of Vermont eventually winter catches up with us. During January & February it slowed down at Peaceable Hill Farm, so Glenn went flying around the Adirondacks from frozen lake to frozen lake with his taildragger buddies while I sat on one lake in my River Rocker, made by waiting for warmer temps and working on my whiskey slushy recipe. Well we are back in action now with great weather. Peaceable still has great cover for walk ups, the instruction area is in full swing and we have one more driven shoot on the 2nd of April.

Unloading Dad's old trapper's basket. Chanterelles are at their end but I stumbled onto a nice flush of blewits, a small handful of lobsters and a mature Berkeley's polypore. Was hoping for hedgehogs but they eluded me.
