This temple is also known as Lepakshi Temple, which is also known as 'Hanging Pillar Temple'. There are a total of 70 pillars in this temple, out of which one pillar is not connected to the ground. It mysteriously hangs in the air.
The unique pillars of Lepakshi temple are also known as Akash Stambh. In this, a pillar is raised about half an inch above the ground. It is a belief that taking out something from under the pillar brings happiness and prosperity in the house. This is the reason why people coming here take out cloth from under the pillar.
It is said that the pillar of the temple was earlier attached to the ground, but a British engineer shook it to know how the temple rests on the pillar, since then the pillar is swinging in the air.
The presiding deity in this temple is God Virbhadra, the ferocious form of God Shiva. Virbhadra Maharaj came into existence after the Yagya of Daksha.Apart from this, other forms of God Shiva, Ardhanarishwar, Skeleton Murti, Dakshinamurti and Tripuratakeshwar are also present here. The mother sitting here is called Godess Bhadrakali.
Built on the hills of Kurmaselam, this temple is built in the shape of a turtle. The temple is said to have been built in the 16th century by two brothers named Virupanna and Viranna, who worked for the Vijayanagara king. Although mythological belief is that this temple was built by sage Agastya.
According to beliefs, the mention of this temple is also found in Ramayana and it is the same place where Jatayu fell down after getting injured after fighting with Ravana and told God Shri Rama the address of Ravana.
There is also a big footprint in the temple, which is believed to be the witness of Treta Yuga. Some consider it to be the footprint of God Shri Rama and some consider it to be the footprint of Godess Mother Sita.
