Introducing the story of , co-founder of , a new MTB brand with a priority of making products that they themselves as riders are stoked to ride in whilst leaving the corporate bean counter mentality behind. Travis’s journey in MTB apparel started a long time ago though with a good stint at raceface and who remembers ?

Adam 'The Tart' Read of tartybikes has an uncanny knack for delving into anything mechanical and coming out the other end with and amazing level of expertise and knowledge. One of those delves happened to lead to the creation of TartyBikes the go to shop for trials parts and knowledge and a yardstick by which online bike stores should be measured.

‘The office is where I spend most of my time, I’ve made every issue of Shredder from issue 5 onwards from there. I spend hours every week flicking through old magazines, nerding out over design books and working on Shredder projects in that room. The shed serves as my own personal workshop, a warm place to blast tunes, drink beer and tinker with my bikes - I love it equally as much as the office.’

What's the story behind the face masks that appear to be prevalently featured across your platforms?

This is potentially going to sound really cringey, but the way I see it, the mask is almost like an alter ego. A faceless figure who is often misunderstood, but has important topics to discuss and a unique perspective to share. Like many other masked eccentrics, Shredder is a loveable villain.

‘I think not knowing the odds may have helped early on in the hospital but I was pretty stubborn and determined to walk again so I don’t think it would’ve mattered. The surgeons did make it clear early on to my parents that the chances of walking again were pretty slim, I just didn’t know how slim at just 5%.’

‘Marked by originality, resourcefulness, and cleverness in conception or ex*****on,’ the definition of ingenious.

The word Ingenious epitomises his style is uniquely and originally his own, in the adversity of his unfortunate accident he’s displayed his resourcefulness and cleverness to combat the challenge and defy scarily low odds of resuming a normal life, let alone riding a bike again.

His film, Blueprint, a short documentary about trail building, puts storytelling at the forefront. “I wanted to show how creative trail builders are,” says Bell. “To show people that building trails is like artwork. The shovel is like the paintbrush.”

However, shreddits seem to garner more views—an important metric when views equate to feeding yourself—and they’re simpler to film. Bell’s, Changing Seasons, a film he describes as a shreddit, doubled Blueprint’s views. “Changing Seasons took 10 days to shoot,” says Bell. “While Blueprint took a year.”

Bell is optimistic about Blueprint’s longevity though, and the film’s recent selection for the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival is affirmation—good story telling makes a difference.

Much like a plant under his care, Bell’s filmmaking career started as a seed with a hobbyist’s interest in videography before exploding three short years later into shooting films for professional mountain bikers and an audience in the 100k range.

His break-through gig was a shoot for the Cumberland Community Forest—335-hectares of lush mountainside in Cumberland, BC—where he captured water dripping off moss and fern spores floating in shafts of sunlight.

“The community really loved seeing the beauty of the forest that surrounded them,” he says, “and it got heavily shared online which got my name in front of a lot of people.”

An opportunity to film action sports came to Bell when Matthews needed a videographer. “We hit it off right away,” says Bell.

Scott Bell wholeheartedly invests himself into projects with incredible ex*****on, examples of which extend far beyond just his stunning filmmaking. This is all done with the unselfish drive of inspiring others to make our world a better place. His quest to push people to create a better world comes from a deep love of nature and a history in organic farming. Pun intended, we could all take a leaf out of Scott’s book.

‘As much as I love mountain biking and it's a big section of the brand/customer base I see us as much more than that. There are elements of skating, art, music, politics and traveling experiences that all together have influenced our pathway and community. I think the people who inspire me are always the ones behind the scenes, or the people who aren't in the spotlight, but behind it. It's the regular dudes that have normal jobs, but still shred and make it happen.

Max Nurakar, is one of those. The guy does it all and just recently one can say he “made it” in the mountain bike industry I guess. I met Max in the woods, Wharncliffe diggin away! The bro is so talented in so many different ways, but what I give him props for is the fact that he has always been himself & stayed true to his values. He has changed a lot, being such a creative individual he is always ahead of the game but inside he is the same down to earth dude I met in the woods many years ago.’

‘It's a crazy world we live in, with social media and influencers. People buy something at whatever price is set as they need to fulfill that look they seek, a lot of people don't even evaluate if the product itself is worth it! How can a t-shirt cost £100, simply do the math! If you don’t, well call the police you just been robbed and you are wearing it with a badge of honesty too!

Lets face it, having a banana as a logo is pretty much committing su***de in terms of marketing or creating a fashionable image. It forces us to make sure we focus our efforts on the products, production, quality, delivery and everything that goes behind a brand (the stuff you don’t see on the cover). You buy from banana not because of the image, but because you support what is done behind the scenes. it real, at the end of the day we do things our way, ourselves in house & we care about every little detail. We don’t do it for money or looks, but simply to provide good products and fulfill the needs of like minded people like us out there. We love that underground vibe.’

Harry Barret’s early years saw him in a place which exposed him to easy access to riding. He appreciates the value of those environments and how they’ve facilitated a path for his riding to develop into the inspiring style we see today, he’s shifted his surroundings recently again in the form of moving from the UK to Whistler, where he’s clearly loving having his environment shape further who he is.

‘I’d have to say the photos from the sunrises on that trip were some of the shots I’m most proud of. They formed the basis of the launch material for the Calibre Sentry and were plastered across magazines and websites for a few months. It was the culmination of a lot of work behind the scenes from the whole crew so to have had amazing light and talented riders to work with was a huge bonus and really brought the whole package together.’

Sam somehow manages to pick his favourite shots from a stunning portfolio.

‘I tell people I’m a self employed photographer but I get up to a few different things in the outdoors industry, mainly focused around marketing mountain bikes. I work closely with Calibre bikes and handle everything from the studio photography, through to riding shots and launch videos, writing press releases, curating the social media and managing our team of sponsored riders. My car insurance says “Marketing Consultant” which is probably fairly accurate at this point and helps keep the premium down haha.’

‘Too many people are following big trends these days such as trying to copy other riders’ style, wearing specific clothing and trying too hard to be someone else. At the end of the day you go home and you’re yourself and only yourself. Be yourself when on the bike, wear what you want, ride how you want to ride and there’ll always be people who hate so don’t worry about trying to impress or be like others.’

‘There's a load of kids that ride down there too who I think definitely have become more rounded people by hanging out and grafting with older lads - it's a proper community down there, whether digging or riding. Everyone feels like they have a bit of ownership of the track too.’
