In December 1937, a football match at Stamford Bridge in London between Chelsea FC and Charlton FC was interrupted in the 60th minute due to heavy fog. Charlton’s goalkeeper, Sam Bartram, unaware that the game had been called off, continued defending his goal for another fifteen minutes. He missed the referee’s whistle because of the noise from the crowd behind him. Believing his teammates were still pressing forward, Bartram stood resolute, arms outstretched, focused on guarding his goal in the thick fog. It was only when stadium police approached that he learned the match had been halted 15 minutes earlier.
