~Sunrise at Negative Eight~

Alternate title: ~I wouldn't make a good Eskimo~

I delivered some work to a corporate client in Bluefield last Thursday and decided to spend the night in the Beckley area so I could grab a snowy sunrise at Grandview - formerly a West Virginia State Park, but now a section of the New River Gorge. I had to laugh at my timing as I just so happened to pick a day w/ below zero temps to capture a sunrise! While it was quite beautiful, I think I'll stick to shooting in temps that are in the above zero realm from now on!

PREPARES FOR BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

During a campaign year that included a somewhat sluggish economy and the largest goal of record for our United Way, the uncertainty of reaching that goal was a given. Then toss in a government shutdown and expansion into two new counties and the challenge was even greater. However, Campaign Chair, Frank Wood never doubted the people in our community. “We have once again witnessed the compassion and generosity of the people in southern West Virginia”, says Mr. Wood.

Join us on Thursday, January 16th at 1:30pm as we formally announce that our 2013/14 campaign goal has been reached. Chair, Frank Wood will be hosting a press conference at Raleigh County Public Library on Kanawha Street in Beckley. Mr. Wood along with his vice chair, Sherrie Hunter, has worked tirelessly to see this goal accomplished. Not because of the goal, but because of the needs in our communities.

The United Way of Southern West Virginia, Inc. is partnering with 34 nonprofit agencies in 2014. Those 34 agencies will receive funds from the United Way based on the amount raised in this campaign. In addition, United Way initiatives like our baby pantries and books for kids will also continue with money raised during this campaign.

Vice Chair, Sherrie Hunter, is also excited about seeing this goal attained. “The fact that we are able to announce the completion of this goal in January is a credit to the many people who contribute to the United Way. We are only the second United Way in West Virginia that has currently met their goal. If it’s through payroll deduction or a onetime donation, or participating in one of our events, we thank you for your support”, says Hunter.
