Spent a pleasant hour reading the interviews with Current 93, Psychic TV and Allerseelen from the unpublished final issue of The Judas Kiss. Recently published as a compendium volume which sold-out almost immediately, I do hope they offer another print run as looking back over this The Judas Kiss gives a comprehensive overview, progression and growth of how post- industrial music moved into neo-folk, martial industrial and so on.

Today we continue our journey into the dark recesses of the Judas Kiss archives with reviews that were penned for the unpublished issue 11 being shared here. All of the reviews were written by myself in or around 2006 so certainly aren't current but do give a historic overview of the genres releases. Where possible i'll attempt to tag the artists in question however please feel free to share these reviews as you see fit

AIN SOPH – ‘Ars Regia’ CD
Athanor
www.arsregia.org
Originally released in 1986 in limited copies, this much sought after CD by esoteric alchemists and masters of ritualistic soundcapes has now been re-issued by the French label Anthaor. Comes complete with a lavishly printed 40 page CD sized booklet containing essays exploring the Magickal, ritualistic elements that formed the very foundations of the early incarnations of this now infamous and deeply influential group. Also included in the booklet is an in-depth discography spanning the whole carrier of Ain Soph, including a complete collection of compilations, LPs and 7”’s they have released. The whole set although bang up to-date has skilfully been put together in a way that it mirrors some ancient track or occult guidance and complements the music contained on the disc perfectly. Since the release of their self-titled CD ‘Ain Soph’ in 1990 the bands sound has progressed to into more musical territories, however their earlier work is still very much based on ritualistic work and soundtracks to accompany such acts and this is where we find the styling of ‘Ars Regia’. Consisting of 6 tracks of dark and sombre music which changes forms from soundtrackesque dark ambient compositions to ritualistic readings to hypnotically minimalist electronic works, Ain Soph’s records have a depth and purpose that transcends what the ‘normal’ expectations of music should be and in stead offers up a diverse and complex set of recordings that are produced to assist the more magickal elements of ritualistic practice, making ‘Ars Regia’ an deeply interesting release to those who tread this path. This said, what Ain Soph have also managed to do with this and their other releases of ritual origin is produce a wonderfully deep and layered, ‘dark ambient’ styled set of recordings, that can be appreciated by those who have an interest purely in the music itself. ‘Ars Regia’ is a interesting release in both musical and ritualistic terms and offers up an important in-sight into one of today’s most aloof and mysterious ‘post-industrial’ groups.

Allerseelen – ‘Edelweiss’ CD
Ahnstern/Steinklang

Allerseelen have always been one of those artists whom I’ve always look forward to hearing their new release – whether it be a new full length album or a limited 7” record – the result remains the same, as Gerhard’s music is distinctively catchy and immensely enjoyable, regardless of what guise it takes. With the release of ‘Edelweiss’ the first collaboration with Steinklang Records, Allerseelen have decided to release a compilation of tracks that span the first five years of the of the 21 century, as a showcase of the multifaceted musical styles and ideas that have made up the Allerseelen releases covered in this 5 year period.
I’m not too sure why the decision was made to only take tracks from this period of time, as Allerseelen’s musical legacy spreads much further back in time than 2000, however I’m sure there’s a very good reason for this, which will no doubt become clear at some point – perhaps even a second compilation covering this earlier period of Allerseelen will emerge in the near future. Lets hope so.
What Gerhard has done with ‘Edelweiss’ is skilfully select an amalgamation of CD and 7” singles tracks and interwoven them with a number of reworked pieces to create a wonderfully atmospheric driven collection of recordings that pull on the very heartstrings of European folk- lore in sound and aesthetics. Ranging from delicately pop-tinged, to hauntingly beautiful piano pieces to highly emotive and rousing neo-folk songs, the spectrum of sounds and musical themes moves subtly from track to track to create an amazing evocative and delightful display of music. By opting for the more musical, folkesque tracks from his large back-catalogue, Gerhard has produced a magical CD that flows together as if all of the tracks had been recorded at the same session and not as separate entities over a five year period, which together create a wondrous sound and aura that captures the very essence of European folk-lore, which can be found been within the heart of all of Allerseelen’s work. The very evocative nature of this music is captured perfectly and played out for all to enjoy and partake in. Aided by a collective of musicians, Demian (O PARADIS), Rosa (CIRCE), Gaya (HAGSHADOW), JOSEF and Herr Percht (STURMPERCHT), Gerhard Hallstatt has set out to show one distinctive side of Allerseelen, which has done perfectly and in doing so has created an album in it’s own right which is as powerful and emotive as anything he has released so far and has offered up ‘Edelweiss’ as the definitive collection of Allerseelen’s more folk-inspired recordings.

Thank you for the 'likes'. That's very much appreciated. If you know of anyone who may like this page but hasn't come across it yet please point them in this direction.
I've got hi resolution images of all the Judas Kiss covers which I'll be uploading shortly.

I then plan on scanning each complete issue for publication on here. Unfortunately I can't locate the digital copies I created any more. This is going to take some time as some of the last issues are pretty huge.

A request for help. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of issue 1 anymore. If anyone has a copy they'd be willing to loan me it would be hugely appreciated. Issue 1 was perhaps the most goth of issues and has interview with the ever lovely Gitane Demone and Nik Fiend from Alien S*x Fiend amongst others.
