No ceremony
Stockholm canceled full-time Nobel Prize awarding
In Stockholm, for the first time in 76 years, the award ceremony for the Nobel Prize laureates in the traditional five nominations has been canceled. Of course, because of the corona pandemic. For the same reason, there will be no solemn banquet at the Stockholm City Hall, the Nobel Foundation said.
However, the presentation of awards in the field of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and economics on December 10 will still take place. Only the laureates will receive medals and diplomas not from the hands of the King of Sweden at the Stockholm Philharmonic, but at home. Universities and Swedish embassies will be involved in organizing the events. The traditional ceremony will be replaced by a TV broadcast with broadcasts from different countries.
Well, next winter - if, of course, the situation with the coronavirus allows - the winners of this year will be invited to Stockholm and will be able to feel the atmosphere of celebration, albeit after the fact. Let us remind you that the first prizes under the testament of Alfred Nobel were awarded in 1901. During World War II, some of them were not awarded at all, and some were postponed. "The last time in Stockholm there was no ceremony at all was in 1944," Nobel Prize historian Gustav Kellstrand reminded AFP. "The winners of that year were awarded in 1945."
