On behalf of Charity’s Children Project, we are so proud and honored that our dear Matriarch Charity Davis Ceasar Broady has been recognized in such a profound and public way. This photo comes from the Legacy of Charity’s Children LLC archives and is significant in many ways. The second home on the right is 60/62 Eaker St. where Grandmother Charity lived in the 1870s. She was in her seventies and a widow of John Broady, a Dayton barber. The Broady home neighbored the Eaker Street AME Church, where in 1884, Paul Laurence Dunbar delivered "An Ode to Easter," the first public reading of his poetry.

Visible behind the Broady home, and still in existence today, are the steeples of Emmanuel Catholic Church. Dayton's first Catholic congregation was established in 1837. The building and steeples pictured in the background were built in 1871.

The Dayton Daily News reports that the Eaker Street area (which includes the former site of the Broady home) has been purchased by Chaminade Julienne High School to make way for a reimagined campus that will connect the high school to area universities

“Her legacy is becoming legendary,” Griffin said. “The telling and sharing of our family’s story has become our family obligation and privilege. On behalf of Mother Charity and her children, we, the descendants of Charity Davis Caesar Broady, want you to know we are grateful for this recognition. It’s a recognition and acknowledgement of a history that has been a part of the fabric of the Miami Valley for 220 years, and a recognition and acknowledgement of a history that ensures that a history ignored does not become a history denied.”

Check out Patricia's thought-provoking and insightful interview with "What's the Value" Host Terry McMullen.

Podcast Summery: Understanding where you came from, how you became the person you are, and why you value the things you value--those are all reasons my guest Patricia would say it is important to understand your family history. The concept of history is so fickle in a world that changes so rapidly. Perspectives disappear and it is usually a subjective decision on what stories are told. That is the exact reason Patricia values preserving and telling her family's story so much (as she is doing through her work and podcast - Charity's Children Project).

“It would be challenging to check, but as far as we know, the Pattersons were the only Black automobile manufacturers,” Anderson said. The Smithsonian’s Museum of African American History and Culture also recognizes the Pattersons as the only Black carmakers.”

C.R. Patterson & Sons of Greenfield, Ohio, became the first Black-owned automobile manufacturer in 1915. More than a century later, it remains the only known one.

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, Charity's Children Project issued a press statement challenging Wright State University's Black History research and data as it relates to Dayton, Ohio's first black neighborhood.

On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Wright State University held a public lecture entitled “Finding Africa: Using Archival Data to Recover Dayton’s First Black Neighborhood” at the Dunbar Library. The research conducted was led by Drs. Geoffrey R. Owens and Marlese Durr of the School of Social Sciences and International Studies Department.

The following video statement is from Founder Patricia Smith Griffin and was issued to the students of Wright State University who are studying under Dr. Owens, many of whom are in disagreement with Owens' methodology and research. This statement was created to show solidarity and support.
