The 3 best UK cities for AI jobs
The UK has been at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation from the very beginning. In fact, the earliest successful AI program was written in 1951 by Christopher Strachey, later the director of the Programming Research Group at the University of Oxford.
As the sector has grown and developed over the last 70 years, so too have AI job opportunities. New roles such as data scientist, big data engineer, software architect, and machine learning engineer are becoming more in demand.
But how did the UK become an AI epicentre? It has a large pool of talent and world-class academic institutions offering degrees in AI including Imperial College London, The University of Edinburgh, and the University of Manchester. Naturally, top AI companies are attracted to the emerging talent pipeline, and have settled here in their droves.
The total number of AI companies (startups and scaleups) in the UK now exceeds 2,000, which is double that of three years ago. This impressive expansion is not going to slow down anytime soon.
AI jobs driven by industry
According to Gartner, global AI software revenues will reach $62bn this year, more than a 20% increase over last year. And the research group has good news for the UK too, predicting that AI could deliver a 22% boost to the UK economy by 2030. This is more important than ever as we face rising inflation rates, a cost of living crisis, and fears of a recession in the not-so-distant future.
The UK government is firmly on board too. In February, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport pledged up to £23m in government funding to create more AI conversion courses that will help young people from underrepresented groups to kick-start their careers in the field.
This investment in widening education and opportunity is just one of several steps in the 10-year AI national strategy, which aims to make Britain a world leader in AI.
There has never been a better time to think about future-proofing your career. And if you want to secure a job in an emerging sector with amazing growth potential, excellent salaries (£40,000-£70,000 for new graduates), and great job prospects, then AI should be right at the top of your list.
But, where are the top cities in the UK for AI jobs, and what companies are hiring at the moment? Let’s take a look.
London
Naturally, London is a hotspot for all things tech-related and AI is no different. The city is home to almost 1,300 AI companies – more than New York and double the combined number in Paris and Berlin.
On top of investment and talent, London has a secret ace up its sleeve: data. The London Datastore, a free data-sharing portal from the Mayor of London, provides everyone with access to more than 700 datasets on London. Top companies in the city include OneTrust, Graphcore, and Thought Machine.
Google is hiring a Solution Specialist AI/ML in the city now. You’ll form part of a central and highly specialised technical team that engages directly with customers and partners with a focus to accelerate the usage of conversational AI solutions on top of the Google Cloud Platform.
Manchester
In 2020, a world-first AI study found that Manchester outperforms all other major UK cities in fields including AI and data, cybersecurity, ecommerce, and IoT.
In the same year, the city launched the Greater Manchester AI Foundry, a £6m project that combines business innovation expertise and leading AI research from Manchester Metropolitan University, Lancaster University, University of Manchester and the University of Salford to help SMEs create new AI products and services. The city is quickly becoming synonymous with AI thanks to companies such as Peak AI, Wolf Logic ltd and Neoteric.
Peak AI is hiring in the city now. The Solutions Architect will build technical solution architectures using Peak’s services, create technical specifications for solution designs centred around deep operations and supply chain problems, with rigorous performance monitoring systems included.
Cambridge
Cambridge was recently named as the UK’s most “AI-ready city” in a study by software analytics company SAS. The study found that Cambridge scored the highest on its AI-readiness Index, which ranks cities based on the number of AI-related jobs, R&D spend, GDP, business growth, and the number of relevant academic courses available.
Of course, it’s not unexpected that a cluster of high-tech companies would pop up next to one of the world’s leading universities. But what is it that makes Cambridge such a good place to work in AI? Well, most people cite the collaborative and friendly startuup environment where companies such as Darktrace, ConcertAI, and Wayve are thriving alongside giants such as Google and Apple.
Apple is hiring in Cambridge right now for an AI/ML Release Management Engineer. You’ll play a part in the next revolution in human-computer interaction, transforming the way people find their favourite movies and TV shows, watch sports, listen to music, interact with their smart home and much more.

England World Cup squad: Maddison makes cut with Wilson and Rashford
White, Gallagher, Walker and Phillips also in 26-man squadGuéhi, Tomori and Ward-Prowse not selected by managerGareth Southgate has taken the shock decision to include James Maddison in his England squad for the World Cup in Qatar. The Leicester playmaker, who has been in outstanding form in 2022, had feared he would be overlooked by a manager who has previously used him only once – as a substitute in the European Championship qualifying win over Montenegro in November 2019.Southgate also recalled Marcus Rashford, rewarding the Manchester United striker for his return to form, and found room for Ben White, Callum Wilson and Conor Gallagher. White will offer an option at right-back, with Reece James ruled out because of a knee injury, and will also provide depth in central defence, where Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guéhi have been excluded. Autumn Statement: Renewing SEIS and EIS top policy concern for startup founders
Updating the UK’s early-stage investment and enterprise tax relief initiatives is the most pressing legislative issue for UK startup founders ahead of the chancellor’s Autumn Statement, data has shown.
A poll of over 50 founders by the crowd investment platform Crowdcube found UK startup founders are calling for growth from the government without sacrificing environmental protection. The potential benefits of cutting EU red tape did not rank highly among the business founders.
Renewing or replacing the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) beyond 2025 was chosen as a top three priority by 57% of founders.
EIS and SEIS are government-backed schemes that give tax breaks to startups and investors during the early-stage funding process. Former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng increased the amount that companies can raise using SEIS up to £250,000 – a two-thirds increase and a move that was widely welcomed by the UK startup and investor community.
Those changes appear to have survived the reversal of much of the ill-fated mini-budget.
“The founders who took our poll are the future of British business. As their companies grow, they will employ more people, create more wealth, and contribute more to our economy than almost any other type of company,” Darren Westlake, CEO and co-founder of Crowdcube.
“What’s clear is that while the short-term bottom-line boosting policies promoted by the previous administration are important, they are far from paramount.”
While the startups were broadly in favour of supporting economic growth, they stressed it cannot come at the cost of environmental safety. Some 53% of the participating founders put environmental protection in their top three priorities.
“Founders would rather see the economy managed in a way that is socially and environmentally sustainable than run with a flash-in-the-pan, growth-at-all-costs mindset,” added Westlake.
“In the development of successful, exciting policies like the Futures Fund, Rishi Sunak has already demonstrated a capacity and enthusiasm to support our sector and its aspirations.”

Next buys Made.com scraps for £3m just one year after £775m IPO
Clothing brand Next has bought the Made.com brand and intellectual property for £3.4m after the beleaguered furniture ecommerce company entered administration.
Next, which trades on the London Stock Exchange, has agreed to purchase the remaining IP and the rest of the brand of Made for £3.4m, a far cry from the £775m value given to the online retailer at the time of its IPO last year.
“Having run an extensive process to secure the future of the business, we are deeply disappointed that we have reached this point and how it will affect all our stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers and shareholders,” said Susanne Given, chair of Made.com.
“We appreciate and deeply regret the frustration that MDL (Made.com) going into administration will have caused for everyone.”
Prior to entering administration, Made.com sought a buyer as a late effort in saving the company but none of the interested parties could meet the appropriate timeline for the deal.
It is not yet clear if Next will keep any of Made’s more than 500 jobs.
The writing had been on the wall for some time at Made.com after the ecommerce company cancelled new customer orders and its shares were suspended.
It saw a surge in sales during lockdowns that proved temporary and shares in Made.com fell steadily after its IPO. Analysts have said its business model was flawed, with its reliance on more than 200 factories resulting in orders being deprioritised during global supply chain disruption.
It then turned to stocking up warehouses with its inventory, instead of the made-to-order model on which it was founded.

Semi-final: England, 170-0, bt India, 168-5, by 10 wicketsHales (86*) and Buttler (80*) finish off India alone in superb styleEngland somersaulted and cartwheeled their way to a stunning and historic thrashing of India in Adelaide to rocket into the T20 World Cup final, as Alex Hales and Jos Buttler took what at the halfway stage looked a testing target and toyed with it like a cat might a ball of wool, making it look approximately as threatening, to lead their side home with all 10 wickets and fully four overs to spare.Chasing 169, Hales (who scored 86 off 47) and Buttler (80 off 49) produced not just the largest but in any sense you like the greatest opening partnership in England’s T20 history (Hales has now been involved in all of England’s top five). By the end India were a rabble; there was an all-run four, vanishingly rare in this format, when Mohammed Shami fielded and tried to toss the ball to a teammate but missed, and another boundary when Buttler skied the ball over mid-off and Suryakumar Yadav not only dropped the catch – a difficult one, to be fair, with the ball dropping over his shoulder – but shovelled the ball a further 10 yards to the rope. US midterm elections 2022: both Senate and House remain in balance as counting continues – live
Latest updates and results after Joe Biden hails ‘good day’ for democracy as Democrats outperform expectations in US midterm electionsUS midterm elections results 2022 – liveCNN’s Fredreka Schouten reports that allegations of intimidation or harassment of Arizona voters continued, with a total of 21 complaints – including one threatening government officials — being forward to federal and state law enforcement, according to information released yesterday. She writes:One of the 21 complaints involved a threat against government officials. The 22 October email, which said it was a warning to “Corrupt and Treasonous Government Officials”, mentioned the violence of the French Revolution and promised to use property tax records to find workers’ homes. The secretary of state’s office has referred it to the FBI. All of the complaints forwarded to federal and state law enforcement so far involve reports of alleged intimidation before election day.Depending on the outcome of other races that still haven’t been called, Georgia may end up being Republicans’ last chance to deny Democrats a Senate majority. Republican Herschel Walker performed significantly worse than Governor Brian Kemp, who easily won re-election Tuesday while Walker failed to crack 50% of the vote.Republicans turning out to vote for Kemp may have helped pull Walker’s scandal-plagued campaign close to 50% — meaning he could have a harder time rallying support on his own in the runoff. Faradai raises £2m as climate tech funding keeps momentum
Net zero intelligence company Faradai has raised $2.4m (£2.1m) in the latest fundraise for climate tech, which has been significantly backed recently despite a wider tech downturn.
Founded in 2017, Faradai generates energy intelligence data for large enterprises to monitor their carbon emissions and improve efficiency.
More and more companies in the UK are making net zero pledges, which supports the growth of startups like Faradai, which specialises in providing climate insight in line with net zero goals.
However, according to the company founders, Sahin Caglayan, Burak Sefer, and Utku Simitli, “setting targets is only the first step. Constructing a credible and achievable plan for monitoring, reducing, or eliminating Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions is a huge challenge for even the largest organisations”.
The company said: “With Faradai’s real-time AI-powered prediction engine and IoT-powered data acquisition capabilities, Faradai provides science-based methodologies to define an actionable pathway of decarbonisation activities and achieve its customers’ net zero ambitions.”
The new funding came from Sangha Capital, Edenbase, ACTAI Ventures, Goldacre, and EthAum Ventures. Investors from Goldman Sachs UK also participated.
The backing of Faradai marks yet another investment into UK climate tech, which in November alone has seen a lot of support where other sectors in tech have struggled.
Other UK climate startups that received investments this month include Carbon Re, which raised £4.2m, and Zellar, which raised £600,000 at a £33m valuation. Both firms, like Faradai, provide insight into company carbon emissions.
Alternative battery startup LiNa Energy also saw a funding round this month, in which it raised £3m.
Tech Nation in its Climate Tech Report 2022 found that UK investment into the sector was on course to double compared to the previous year.
