22/12/2022

STRONG WINDSTORM AND ARCTIC FRONT UPDATE:

PRECIPITATION: Widespread soaking rain arrives this evening and persists through Friday afternoon. Thunderstorms with heavier rain and hail are possible within this event, especially with the arctic front passage in the afternoon. Snow showers follow behind the front in the evening and continue overnight through Sunday morning along the southern shoreline due to ocean effect influence.

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: Dustings up to 1 inch are possible across the region with 2 to 5 inches along the southern shoreline.

PRE-FRONTAL WINDS: East-southeasterly winds begin to increase this afternoon with gusts around 15 mph. Widespread frequent gusts of 30-40 mph then develop Thursday night including peaks of 45-55 mph on occasion, especially on east-facing shorelines. A secondary peak comes through early to mid Friday morning as the warm front passes with scattered gusts of 55-65 mph. These will then shift out of due south late morning ahead of the arctic front with widespread gusts of 30-40 mph and up to 50 mph in more exposed areas possible.

POST-FRONTAL WINDS: The arctic front passes through the region early Friday afternoon with widespread gusts of 40-50 mph and locally up to 60 mph out of the southwest. These will decrease to 35-45 mph and remain elevated at the coast with 45-55 mph. A gradual decrease to 25-35 mph occurs Friday night inland with 35-45 mph in coastal areas. Saturday will decrease further to 15-25 mph north of US-44 with 25-35 mph continuing along the southern shoreline, with up to 40 mph on the outer Cape. Westerly gusts of 25-35 mph across the region may then continue until Monday morning.

WIND IMPACTS: Monitor coastal flooding alerts for inundation and erosion. Periods of strong gusts over land with shifting winds will likely result in widespread power outages, downed tree limbs and weaker trees fully coming down. Lack of foliage will help for less widespread tree damage but power lines can still be damaged either way from snapped poles and downed branches. Outdoor objects will be blown away if not secured.

TEMPERATURE IMPACTS: Rising into the 40s Thursday night and peaking in the 50s ahead of the arctic front Friday morning. These will rapidly drop into the 30s in the afternoon then teens and single digits Friday night. Wet grounds will freeze with lots of untreated surfaces becoming icy. Power outages will also lead to heating concerns in homes including potential for bursting pipes. Heat homes higher than usual Thursday night to delay these effects and keep faucets dripping if the power goes out. Outdoor plants will be killed and so will any animals/pets unsheltered. Frostbite can occur rapidly in brutal wind chills.

22/12/2022

STRONG WINDSTORM AND ARCTIC FRONT:

PRECIPITATION: Rain arrives Thursday evening and persists through Friday morning before a break between the warm front and arctic cold front. Thunderstorms with heavier rain are possible within this event. A line of heavy showers moves through Friday afternoon with the arctic front passage including a chance for lightning strikes and hail. This could be potentially followed by snow showers on the backside of the front Friday night, with the greatest risk along the southern shoreline from ocean-effect influence.

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: Patchy dustings are possible on the backside of the front but a few inches could accumulate along the southern shoreline if ocean-effect banding is persistent enough.

PRE-FRONTAL WINDS: East-southeasterly winds begin to increase Thursday afternoon with gusts around 15 mph. Widespread frequent gusts of 30-40 mph then develop Thursday night including peaks of 45-55 mph on occasion, especially on east-facing shorelines. A secondary peak comes through early to mid Friday morning as the warm front passes with gusts of 55-65 mph and locally up to 70 mph at the coast. These will then shift out of due south late morning ahead of the arctic front with widespread gusts of 35-45 mph.

POST-FRONTAL WINDS: The arctic front passes through the region early Friday afternoon with widespread gusts of 45-55 mph. These will decrease to 35-45 mph inland with a shift out of the southwest and remain elevated at the coast. A gradual decrease to 20-30 mph occurs Friday night and can still exceed 30 mph along the southern shoreline. Saturday through Sunday night will remain gusty at 25-35 mph across the region. Winds become more northwesterly Monday and Tuesday with a decrease to 15-25 mph.

These will rapidly drop into the 30s in the afternoon then teens Friday night.
