During this time of Caronavirus global outbreak, unprecedented in human history, spurring emotional contagion as we see, in the grocery stores and in the media, we can remember that when we’re fearful, we might not make the clearest, best decisions. This is where mindfulness can help;
As long as there is no immediate threat that requires an immediate response, we can practice being mindful, and self-compassionate. Take time out of our usual autopilot states, and check out what we are feeling in our bodies, and our nervous system. We want to be alert and aware and at the same time want to maintain some calm and stability. Especially, if we’re caring for children.
One way we can CALM THE NERVOUS SYSTEM is by practicing mindfulness while washing our hands...
Mindful Handwashing:
We have 20 seconds to be mindful of how the warm water feels, the slipperiness of the soap, etc. or, we can try a short lovingkindness meditation: “May we be happy, may we be safe, may we live with ease no matter what we are given.” Or, just take some mindful breaths; allowing the belly to move, and keep the chest still. A Harvard study reports how; “belly breathing reduces blood pressure, and calms the nervous system...6 breaths per minute”
After you take a ‘calm break’ check back in. How much of what you’re feeling is anxiety added by the mind to an already difficult situation? Is your mind thinking, or spinning?
If we stay balanced and resilient, we can shepherd each other together, and come out the other side of it feeling more loving and connected than before.
