(GaWxNet, 1/10/2025, 6:00 pm Update)
From now until about 11 pm, North Georgia will be in the critical period in terms of the freezing rain and icing impacts. Temperatures will not move very much tonight. Locations at or just below freezing will be our main areas of concern. Temperatures in the mid-levels of the atmosphere will remain slightly warmer than the surface. Precipitation over North Central, Northeast Georgia as well as a portion of Northwest Georgia along the I-59 corridor will fall as rain. But with surface temperatures at or below freezing, this will cause that precipitation to freeze on contact. Freezing rain is the most destructive precipitation type as it creates icy roads and brings down trees and powerlines. The conditions remain especially favorable for freezing rain and excessive ice buildup in the Lake Lanier/Gainesville area. The models are now pushing ice accumulations in excess of a quarter of an inch in this area.

As of 6 pm, there are about 70,000 customers without power across the state. That number is expected to rise through the late night and overnight hours.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for all of North Georgia and portions of Middle Georgia until Saturday morning. Please stay off the roadways tonight!

With temperatures hovering right around the freezing mark in North Georgia, there are several variables determining our precipitation rate and type. This has put the weather models into overdrive! The snowfall estimates have been bumped back up again, with most (not all) of the snow still north of I-20. Keep in mind, the snow is expected to switch to a mix and to rain in areas. Temperatures will fall below freezing in North and Middle Georgia tonight creating significant travel hazards. Stay off the roads if at all possible today through tomorrow morning!

(GaWxNet, 1/10/2025, 6:00 am)
The wintry mix of precipitation has arrived in parts of North and Middle Georgia. We are mainly seeing sleet with some light snow showers. This wintry mix will continue through the day today above I-20, but switch mainly to rain south of I-20 by noon. The latest forecast models have shifted the snow line north and the ice line south. The most significant snowfall will be mainly in the North Georgia Mountains. Ice accumulation above 0.10" is possible as far south as Carrollton to Macon to Augusta. A more significant ice threat remains around the Lake Lanier/Gainesville area. Freezing rain this afternoon and evening is also very possible along the I-85 corridor in Northeast Georgia.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for all of North Georgia and portions of Middle Georgia until 7 am Saturday.

** The Winter Storm Warning for all of North Georgia and parts of Middle Georgia will now go into effect at 5 am Friday morning. **

A mix of multiple winter precipitation types are expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to 3 inches and ice accumulations up to one third of an inch are possible.

Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause widespread and long-lasting power outages. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes.

Ice accumulations have been increased across portions of the I-20 and I-85 corridors. Additional changes to ice and snow amounts are possible with future forecast updates.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

(GaWxNet, 1/9/2025, 10:00 pm Update)
We are now able to work in high resolution model data to help refine the winter storm forecast a bit more. There have been no drastic changes in the forecast models over the past couple of days. Based on the speed and motion of storm system moving out of Texas and into Arkansas/Louisiana, the timing of the system into Georgia remains about the same as well.

We can expect snow showers moving into West Georgia around 6-7 am Friday. These snow showers will continue moving east, mainly impacting North Georgia above I-20. After a period of snow, we can expect a mix changing over to rain. By Friday evening, our main hazard will be freezing rain.

The biggest challenge with this forecast is how much snow will actually fall and remain on the ground during the daylight hours on Friday. A decent blanket of snow will help keep surface temperatures cooler, which will reduce the impacts of freezing rain later in the day and evening. The forecast models have been trending the temperatures up a few degrees, but that may or may not happen. Either way, significant icing is still expected to occur, which will make travel Friday evening into Saturday morning hazardous in parts of North Georgia.

The Winter Storm Watch continues across north and portions of Central GA. This watch is still in effect from 7 AM Friday until 7 AM Saturday. Significant accumulations of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will lead to hazardous travel conditions and the potential for power outages.

(GaWxNet, 1/8/2025, 11 am Update): The weather models remain in strong agreement that winter weather will move into North Georgia on Friday. Snow showers could make it to parts of West Georgia as early as daybreak Friday. Snow showers will remain mainly (but not exclusively) north of I-20 throughout the day. Snow will switch to mainly rain by the afternoon hours, then the possibility of freezing rain after 7 pm for parts of North Georgia. Dangerous icing conditions possible through Metro Atlanta and along the I-85 corridor in North Georgia. The north Georgia Mountains will likely see only snow throughout Friday and into very early Saturday morning.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for most of North Georgia beginning Friday at 7 am.
