In 2010, I was 17. My family organized a drive to send non-perishable goods, medical supplies, clothes, and more to Haiti. I remember us having to wait almost 30-days just to find out if our supplies made it. To our surprise, everything was stolen on the ship. Never making it to Haiti.
We felt discouraged, almost heartbroken that we asked for so much just to be robbed before it could even make it to the ground.
I’ve been asked by so many in the last 24 hours and I can not tell you who you can or can not trust. Unless I am physically going to Haiti myself, I can’t tell you who. I can share what others provide, I can tell you who I’ve donated to in the past but Haiti is … unpredictable.
One thing is for sure, listen to Haitians in Haiti. I, as a Haitian living in America, can not tell you what the people need—only they can.
Personally, money isn’t the solution and it’s never been a solution. Resources on the other hand, yes. A lending hand, yes. But, the influx of money being sent to a billion different organizations saying they’re doing the same thing doesn’t sit right with me and doesn’t seem the best course of action.
A friend once told me, “everything you put in this world has been a success and not many people can say that”.
The truth is. I’ve failed. But, I’ve chosen to embrace failure instead of fighting it. Failure to me is an opportunity to improve and bringing me one step closer to success.
Failure tells me something is not working; it’s constructive feedback. It tells me what I need to do next.
Every since I adopted this perspective, my successes came from me learning the billion ways I shouldn’t do it (my failures).
