There is One - Christ Jesus: "X" Marks the Spot

In the infancy of the Christian church, a simple yet profound symbol emerged. The Christian fish, known as the Ichthys or Ichthus (Greek), was often drawn discreetly in the dirt or sand by early believers. It held within it a story of intersections: where the divine meets humanity, grace confronts sin, and good battles evil. It started with a point, a moment in Eden where the serene beauty of connected creation collided with the complex reality of free will, separation, and shame, setting in motion a saga of redemption.

That initial point in Eden sparked a traumatic division between God and his beloved humans. Two paths emerged, one toward the things above and one toward things below. Yet the trajectory of each line drawn in the sand also formed an arc destined to intersect a second time as an "X" or cross.

The upper arc represents the heavens bending towards earth, a testament to a Creator's love and the promise of divine intervention. It speaks of prophets and kings, laws given, and sacrifices made, a narrative arc bending through time toward an ultimate act of love.

The opposing arch represents humanity's journey. It is a tale of fall and redemption, of wandering and return. This arc speaks to our shared human experience – the struggles, the losses, and the yearning for something greater than ourselves. Yet, in its curve is hope, a gentle reminder that our stories are not defined by our falls but by a hope of resurrection, guided by divine grace.

At the heart of our story is the second intersection, the 'X' that marks the profound meeting of the divine and human in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Here, on the cross, the narrative of humanity and the sacred intertwine in an act of unparalleled "no greater love" and sacrifice. This intersection represents the moment when all that separated humanity from God was forever altered, where the course of history and the fate of every soul found a new direction.

For over 2,000 years, the cross remains more than a symbol; it's a beacon of hope, an anchor for faith, and a testament to love's power to transform. It piques our attention, appearing in our art, architecture, monuments, jewelry, and even branding many with tattoos, a constant reminder of the profound impact of Christ's sacrifice. It invites us to ponder, reflect, and align our lives with its transformative message. Even for nonbelievers, the cross holds a mystic message of hope "for even me" who is lost but can be found or blind but can one day see. It's a journey of continual transformation, of becoming beacons of light in a world that often dwells in shadows.

As images of the cross are imprinted on our minds or bodies or adorned in the form of jewelry, we pray that we also can be a chosen symbolic sepulcher (tomb) for Christ and carry within us the story of his resurrection.

"X Marks the Spot" is not just about historical intersections but about the crossroads in our lives. It's about the moments we meet the divine in our everyday experiences. The story of the cross is an invitation to a life of deeper meaning, of greater purpose, and of enduring hope - no matter who you are or where you come from.

"There is one, Christ Jesus, who can speak to your condition."

GRATITUDE THEORY: Restoring Relationships

Since junior high, I have been fascinated by "humility." Yet, as the root word of "humiliation," it also terrified me. At that age, humiliation and shame are high on the attention scale and never in an objective way.

Wisdom resulting from decades of experience has fostered understanding and insight. Now, I see how humility is the secret sauce for healthy relationships, community, and society.

Humility embeds itself in every spiritual discipline, like prayer, worship, communion, and confession. And every notion of gratitude begins with a spark of humility.

Humility is also a required element of genuine connection. But sometimes connections break, and if we are aware enough, we can recognize that humility broke at the same time.

Some relationships are essential to save you from drowning in bitterness, self-pity, or loss of hope for the rest of your life. But how do you repair a relationship without devaluing either or both parties - especially when there is an unhealthy attachment to the pain, anger, shame, and sorrow involved?

The most effective template for restoration that I have seen is from 2 Chronicles 7:14 in the Old Testament. The story goes that King Solomon just finished a 14-day dedication and celebration festival upon completing the newly built temple. After sending everyone home, he returned to the palace. God appeared to Solomon at night and told him that he approved the temple as a connecting point between God and his people.

Then God reminded Solomon what it's like when there's a disconnection, usually due to complaining. Many bad things happen, like drought, plagues, and swarms of locusts that eat up food crops.

But God followed up with this proclamation. He said, "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." None of that sounds easy. It occurs to me like it's everything that I don't want to do. Yet there's some magic in these words. Let's investigate this as if it's a template.

In restored relationships, the goal is forgiveness, health, and a sustained intimate connection with the other person or the ideal state of being "my people called by my name." Four things are required for that to happen:
1. Attitude of humility - turning your back on your arrogant entitlement for the sake of something better.
2. Pray - use your language to communicate the truth as you can express it authentically.
3. "Seek my face" - lean into the process with a focused intention to connect.
4. "Turn from your wicked ways" - quit doing stupid stuff that keeps you away from what you really want in life.

So, what does this have to do with your gratitude superpower?

Thankfulness is a function of connection. Each of the four aspects of restoring relationships is managed inside of gratitude.
1. Gratitude is naturally open-minded and humbly connecting, empty of arrogance.
2. Speaking words of thanksgiving is authentically expressing truth.
3. Gratitude is a position of desire for a positive result. Hope and intention are present.
4. Gratitude produces clarity and choice, leading to actions consistent with a life that makes a positive difference for yourself and others.

The likelihood of redemptive forgiveness and complete restoration of your relationship is much more assured.

Give it a go!
