"I want to request to the Pakistan government, please don't send us back, we worked to promote women's empowerment and now our life is in danger."

When the Pakistani government abruptly announced all foreigners illegally living in the country had to leave, hundreds of thousands of Afghans packed up and headed to the border. But these two women decided to stay, fearing they would be worse off if they returned to their homeland.

The first Gay Games in Asia has faced a political backlash in co-host city Hong Kong after a group of conservative lawmakers called on authorities to scrap the event – and even suggested it could breach a sweeping national security law.

Junius Ho, a firebrand legislator known for both his intense pro-Beijing nationalism and opposition to gay rights, said said the event could breach provisions within the new national security law that ban foreign powers interfering in Hong Kong’s governance.

In a move that has upturned countless lives, Pakistan ordered all Afghan refugees and migrants without official identity documents to leave the country by November 1 – and vowed to deport any who remain after that date.

“My children have been pulled out of school – the day my children didn’t go to school was like a day of dying for me,” Nasim said. “In Afghanistan there is no school for girls.”

Earlier this week Nasim was leaving the only home he’s ever known, trudging toward Pakistan’s border alongside tens of thousands of fellow Afghan refugees who like him have been given a deadline to depart the country.

Hong Kong’s Gay Games “have not been a political organisation, nor carried any political objectives,” an organiser has said, amid anti-LGBTQ criticism of same-sex marriage from some lawmakers.

Lisa Lam's remarks came after a group of self-proclaimed “patriotic citizens” filed a petition against the games at the legislature on Wednesday, as a lawmaker claimed that hosting the event amounted to “soft resistance” and a threat to national security.

The arrest of a prize-winning Iranian rights lawyer has compounded the anger expressed by rights groups over the death of a teenage girl who activists say was fatally beaten by the Tehran morality police.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, 60, was arrested at the funeral on Sunday in Tehran of Armita Garawand, 17, whose death was reported by Iranian state media at the weekend after a month in a coma.

In Gaza, injured patients are having to undergo surgery without anesthetics, including pregnant women being admitted for emergency C-sections.

Due to the lack of capacity in hospitals, women are being discharged within as little as three hours after giving birth. An average of 160 pregnant women are expected to give birth every day over the next month in Gaza.

CARE is increasingly concerned by reports it receives from medical personnel in Gaza, including that pregnant women are being forced to undergo emergency C-sections without anaesthetics.

Marriage is not now and never has been designed with women’s happiness in mind – and yet we’re told that without it, we will be miserable.

As any sociologist can tell you, it’s men who benefit from marriage: they live longer, they are generally healthier and happier, and their economic prospects improve. On the other hand, studies have shown that married women die earlier. And marriage alone isn’t a guarantee of happiness for women – they are happy if they have a happy marriage.

From the true purpose of the ‘best man’ to losing right to property, marriage was never designed to benefit women. It can’t be fixed – it must be rejected, writes Clementine Ford

A teenage Iranian girl who fell into a coma after she was allegedly assaulted by the country’s morality police for not wearing a headscarf has died.

Armita Geravand, 16, was hospitalized with head injuries following the alleged assault at a Tehran metro station earlier this month, according to activists, just weeks after Iran passed draconian legislation imposing much harsher penalties on women who breach the country’s already strict hijab rules.

Despite Palestinian women’s long history of standing up against injustices, there has always been a lack of support from Western feminist groups and human rights organisations. It is evident that when it comes to women living in the Third World, mainstream feminism has always turned a blind eye.
