Several people around Elvis had at least some understanding of how ill he was, especially those last few years. These quotes below from drummer, Ronnie Tutt, echo that sentiment. If these observations acknowledging that Elvis was a very ill man struggling to maintain his persona had been heard as loudly as the stories of s*x, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, then perhaps it would not have taken over four decades to have a real conversation about the degenerative health of Elvis Presley.
“It was very hard. Very difficult. I think what was interesting about it was we had seen him over the years to be one of the most resilient men I’ve ever known. We’d start rehearsing from something before we had a tour or a Vegas season to do and he might look out of shape and generally not be looking too good. But by the time opening night arrived it was if, as I always joked, he jumped into a phone booth and put on that Elvis suit. Then all you saw was this wonderful, beautiful, powerful artist and entertainer and singer. Despite that perceived resilience, he was very vulnerable at times and had to cancel shows because of his voice.”
“I believe he was a lot more ill than he let on – and that a lot of people realized. One night before he passed on, I came into the dressing room, and he was telling me about some medical problems he had. I can’t remember exactly what the terms were, but I was surprised to hear that he had pains in his abdominal area. I know he was having problems with his eyes. The lights and the flashbulbs were killing him. You’d go and see him before a show and his eyes would be closed and there’d be tears coming down his cheeks.”
