Twin Flames!!
BY
NEVE
OMG!! This new documentary on Netflix has me going crazy. Cult, MLM, crazy leadership and conversion therapy all mixed in one.
So, twin flames is this theory that there is one person out there for you who is your match. And for only your life savings we can show you the way to find them. It’s run by a couple who are so in love that they can teach you how to find that same thing. Oh and the dude in the couple is the second coming. (Remember when I said a religion becomes a cult when the leaders claim to be a celestial being! Same with MLMs. See earlier post about cults). Anywho…these leaders of course indoctrinate others to be ‘coaches’ for their message. Then separate their followers from their families. Then suggest that once you find your ‘twin flame’ you will never say no sexually. (Hi that’s called r**e)
As the documentary continues you see the damage that has been done to the families of the followers. Moms get together to support each other and they contact police. I see similarities to Nixium and Scientology as they all have indoctrination, achievement levels and basically stealing your life.
As a former troublemaker and easily manipulated teen girl I can understand the appeal of societies like these. There were many times in my life when I felt alone and heartbroken. These ‘leaders’ prey upon people who have those feelings. I would never judge someone for being sucked in by a magnetic personality or charismatic leader. I’ve dated people who could have easily had a cult (maybe just a harem) but I’ve been lucky to have a very strong relationship with my family members which I think is one of the best ways to avoid cults.
As a parent now myself I can totally understand and support these mothers who are fighting to get their children back from these cults. I would never give up if someone had brainwashed my kid. It can happen to anyone in any situation. Age, race, sexual orientation and gender identity don’t matter to these types of people. They just want followers and to feel superior. Plus they usually steal your money!

My first Halloween Crime podcast episode is going to be about Ronald Clark O’Bryan. He is known as The Candyman who poisoned his son on Halloween night. He’s decision lead to an urban legend. Poisoned Candy.
For years it has been believed that candy might be poisoned or have razor blades in it. No one allows their children to eat candy that has been opened. No one passes out apples or other treats that are homemade because it will be suspected of contamination. However, the only candy that has been poisoned was a father killing his child. Sick freak!
But the truth is that Halloween has always been a night of mischief and sometimes murder. I’m hoping to explore this more in my podcast this month. Check it out at Apple Podcasts!

Depression and Exercise
BY
NEVE
For me when I’m having a bad patch exercise is the first thing to go. Not everyone is like this. Some people escape into exercise and the gym but that is not me. As someone who has spent the last 15 years seriously overweight as soon as I feel blue I stop going to the gym and walking.
So, how do we get up and going again? Well I’ve learned some tricks to help me get through this process and I thought I’d share. My husband works away from home frequently so I have two different types of exercising. If my husband is home I go to the gym, if he’s not then I walk with my son in the stroller.
I need to go to the gym first thing in the morning. Otherwise it doesn’t get done. So, the night before bed I pack my gym bag and lay out the clothes I need. Then in the morning I need to completely ignore how cute my kid is being and just go! Once I’m at the gym I have to do some type of cardio and some type of lifting. It helps me feel like I’ve accomplished something. If the rest of my day is sitting on my ass at least I know I’ve done something good for myself.
Getting exercise is much harder when my husband is away. Any single parent or parent whose partner travels understand this. I’m in charge of my kid and he isn’t in school yet. So, to make sure I get out I still lay out my workout clothes and put them on first thing. Then I go about my morning routine with my son which takes a while. But by 10 am I make sure we are ready for our walk. I push him in the stroller and we have a 45 minute loop we walk. I talk to him and show him things in our neighborhood. It might not be the best exercise ever but I still feel that sense of accomplishment.

Everyone handles depression differently and everyone has the thing that they ignore while depressed. For me getting exercise is important because I’ve been overweight for so long. I want to keep being healthier for my mental health and for my family. So, whatever it is that makes you feel like you kicked ass today make a plan and do it!

Family Cover Ups
BY
NEVE
I’ve been watching a documentary on Netflix about The Murdaugh Family in South Carolina. It’s very interesting and sad. But it talks a lot about a rich family covering up the crimes of their family members. It’s just sick and twisted. And it made me wonder how many other families are like this.
Many people have heard the story about the Chappaquiddick incident in which Ted Kennedy crashed his car and killed Mary Jo Kopechne. He plead guilty and received two months suspended jail time and a year of probation. Two months suspended which means no jail time at all.
Ethan Couch a 16 year old millionaires son in Texas killed four people while drunk driving. His lawyer argued that he was suffering from “affluenze” syndrome which basically means he’s too rich to understand how his actions affect others. Complete crap!
Leopold and Loeb were two rich families sons who killed a 14 year old boy to prove how smart they were. The wanted to commit the perfect crime. Their lawyer convinced the jury that the boys suffered from Poe parenting and the were not given the death penalty. Even after admitting to the murder.
There are many examples of families who have used influence and money to keep their families safe from prosecution. Sometimes they eventually get what they deserve in the end but often they do not.

Fall
BY
NEVE
Fall is by far my favorite time of year. The weather is cool but not freezing, it gets dark earlier and Colorado is beautiful. I enjoy how beautiful everything is. Plus my son and my husband’s birthdays. Thanksgiving, Halloween and trees changing. It all happens in Fall.
But my favorite thing is Halloween. It is so much fun. I can watch all the horror movies I want and it’s not weird. I try to watch new movies and documentaries on crime during the month of October. I’m happier with my life in the Fall. Which is good because I don’t love winter. However, I’ve come to like it more since moving to Colorado. There’s more sunlight here and less gray days.
I find it’s interesting how much the seasons and weather can affect our moods and feelings. Seasonal depression is a very real phenomenon. It’s painful to be stuck inside and with no sunshine it can be awful.
So, how do we fight depression together? Some of my tricks are to just force myself to go outside. Even if only for a few minutes. As an avid reader I make sure to avoid any unnecessarily sad books during winter. Read more fun and silly books, uplifting stories and autobiographical books about funny people.
As we all enjoy Fall let’s prepare for the slog of Winter.

Cases Solved
BY
NEVE
It always amazes me when crimes are solved years later. This has been happening more lately due to the rise in genetic testing. When getting your DNA tested through the at-home program like “23 and Me” you can choose to share the results with the Police Department. This has helped solve some cases years later. In some cases DNA testing helped to solve the case and in some cases it comes down to luck.
An example of this is the case of Susan Galvin who was murdered in 1967. Her killer was identified in 2019 as Frank Wypych. Wypych had passed away from diabetes complications however her family still got closure after many years of not knowing.
Another example is Karen Klaas who was the wife of The Righteous Brothers singer Bill Medley. She was attacked at her home in 1976 and died in the hospital five days later. In 2017 DNA evidence provided answer’s to the family at last. Notorious criminal Kenneth Troyer had escaped from prison in 1982 and was killed by police. His DNA connected him to the murder of Klaas.
In recent months there has been another major case years after the original death. The murder of Abigail Williams and Liberty German on February 13th 2007, commonly known as the Delphi Murders. Two young teen girls were walking along the Delphi Historic Trails in Indiana when they both disappeared. The next day, sadly, both bodies were found about a half mile from the Monon High Bridge. They had bee thrown from the bridge. Abby’s phone was recovered and she had taken a photo of the killer. A sketch was made from the photo and 5 years later the killer was found. Richard Allen has apparently confessed to his wife that he had murdered both girls. Allen is still claiming his innocence but he is in prison until his trail scheduled for January of 2024.
I hope to follow up with this case after the trail begins.
It is important for the police to have these resources and DNA evidence to catch murders no matter how much time has passed. There is one more case that fits into this subject and that is, of course, the case of The Golden State Killer. I will touch on this case later in my blog but I highly recommend reading the book by Michelle McNamara I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.

I’m looking into starting a Patreon account for my podcast where I talk about non- DC true crime. I’m debating if it’s fair to ask people for money to hear about cases that are pretty famous.

However, there are cases that I have studied a lot. One example is Lizzie Borden. Probably because I’ve spent some time in her hometown. It’s the most adorable town in Massachusetts. Plus there’s the whole rhyme “Lizzie took an axe,” which everyone has heard. But few people know that she was actually found not guilty of the case against her.

There are also so many other cases that are fascinating to me. Along with folklore, urban legends and conspiracies. So I might do that to add content to my collection.

If you have any ideas of things that would make an interesting episode let me know in the comments section!

The Boys of Biloxi by John Grisham. In true Grisham style the Boys of Biloxi centers around the legal system and it’s challenges. Grisham’s writing style and characters have always grabbed my attention. He writes about the South and life seamlessly. I definitely recommend this book as a quick and enjoyable read.

Anxiety and Podcasting

Does my voice sound funny? Will anyone even listen to it? Do I actually have any reason to be doing this? I’m not a reporter or any type of authority on anything. So, why am I doing this?

Anxiety is real and something I’ve struggled with for many years. I get nervous about pretty much doing anything. It’s something I am trying to work through daily. I was taking meds for it and depression but the side effects were too much to handle so I switched to a depression only medication. Since then I’ve been seeing more anxiety symptoms. But it seems worth it to me.
So, now I’m working through anxiety with steps that have helped in the past. Exercise, spending time with my kid, being honest with my partner about how I feel, and doing this blog. Honesty is pretty important for me to handle my anxiety and the problems that arise from it. For many years I’ve struggled with an eating disorder that presents in many different ways. Today I’m not going into how that all works but it isn’t healthy. So, for now being open an honest is the best way to combat anxiety.

Podcasting is scary. I’m nervous about sounding stupid or giving incorrect information. I’m hopeful that I can move past these issues and still be able to make a fun, good podcast.

How do you deal with nerves? What tricks can you share with me that might help? I’m going to be recording and posting my first episode soon. Looking forward to sharing it with you.

Do normal people have a favorite serial killer? Not like favorite because they are good. But one they find most intriguing? I think my interest/obsession began with the big Silence of the Lambs debate. My brother, 3 years older, had heard about Silence from some friends at a widely inappropriate age. My parents, divorced, argued about showing it to him. Of course he ended up seeing it. But I remember my mother saying that it was too dark and too frightening for someone so young. I obviously wanted to see it asap.

I don’t actually remember when I started watching horror, researching the real stories behind the movies and thus beginning a love of true crime. But it started young. Horror has always been my favorite genre of movie. I like them all. The good, the bad and the ridiculous. I don’t discriminate when it comes to horror. I will watch it all.

There are obviously many different types of horror. I like a good monster movie or a killer animal. But the ones that tingle the spine really stick with you. So below I will list my favorite ones.

Killer Animals:
Lake Placid. Prey. Congo. The Birds

Serial Killers:
Silence of the Lambs. Scream.

Demons, the devil and the paranormal. Oh My:
Exorcist. IT. Paranormal Activity

So while I hope to keep this blog primarily focused on true crime and my podcast I reserve the right to go off topic. Today will be such a day.

About 18 years ago I was in a very unhealthy relationship and living situation. I was bartending and drinking like crazy. I fell in love with a serial cheater who never really committed to me anyway. I was so unhappy that I developed an eating disorder; binge eating and bulimia. that plus the massive amount of alcohol I was consuming ended in a huge amount of weight gain in a short amount of time.

Since then I have struggled to lose weight because it’s hard. My top weight was right before my son was born. Obviously the pregnancy added weight but I wasn’t really healthy beforehand either. After my son’s first birthday I went to my doctor to get serious about weight loss because I wanted to be able to play with my son.

So, what to do now. Well I’ve started going back to the gym and I’m trying my hardest to live a healthier lifestyle. So, I’m going to the gym and trying to be a mom and a wife. It’s not easy. I struggle to get motivated and to stay focused on myself when I’m so used to focusing on my son. Everyone has different ways of staying motivated.

Dear reader. I don’t know if anyone else has struggled with weight and motivation but if you have please share your tips and tricks. Thanks!!

I love to read. It may be my favorite thing to do ever. On average I read about 2 books a week. Sometimes less or more. I also listen to podcasts pretty much all the time.

Sometimes these hobbies crash into each other. That happened recently when I discovered that my favorite podcaster Ashley Flowers had written a novel, about true crime in a small town. The book All Good People Here is a fun and exciting read from a first time writer. However, Flowers is hardly a novice when it comes to telling stories. Her podcast Crime Ju**ie is often number one on the charts. She and her friend Brit share their take on crimes. Some well known and some more obscure.

Everyone Remembers Their First

What was that first true crime story that grabbed your attention? You started watching and reading everything you could find about the case. You talked about it obsessively and you had theories about who and how and what and why.

For me it was Chandra Levy. I was 18 when she vanished in Washington DC. Why was this particular case so interesting and so important. Because she was a DC staffer, an intern.

The difficulty in this case is that there are no real answers. The victims are numerous. Yes Chandra was killed but she has a family and friends who don’t have real closure.

I plan on going into much more depth in this case on my podcast. Coming soon!!
