Nice small aurora explosion over the head, from December. Last night we drove a bit far to have the early aurora show, the best of the night, I will post on the coming posts. It was one of the best aurora of the season, it was moving so far and was huge 🙏

It’s December, and we still have northern lights, when it’s not too cloudy every where. In same time, we don’t have so much day light, and if it’s cloudy it’s not so bright during the day. And so, it allows us to have sometimes early aurora show. It can be at 4pm, or 7am (example).

When it explodes over you, it’s just magical. Northern lights pic from December. Reminder : intensity of color and aurora are different every nights, don’t expect always huge show :) mostly in December, with the cloud coverage average, it’s nice if you can see a bit of aurora ✨

Hunting the northern lights is my passion, and my work. I take people with my car and share the evening and the experience of seeing aurora with them. Intensity and location to see the aurora is different every nights. Dancing aurora is not every night !

Still the best aurora of December so far. It looks bright on the pic because of the light from the moon. So yes, we can see aurora when there is full moon, and usually with this parameter, the saturation and intensity of the aurora is more similar with eye and camera than without moon light (in my opinion).

Picture of the colorful northern lights of the first of December. One of the best show of the season, and very colorful. December is the most busy time of the year in Rovaniemi, people come for Christmas in the town of Santa Claus. But this month is often cloudy, making the aurora hunt more difficult and sometimes impossible. However it is still possible to see aurora during the month of course ! And amazing aurora also as on the pic. But remember that huge aurora are not every nights. Come in February March, there is still aurora and less cloud coverage, and less crowded.

Exploding, massive, magic, colorful northern lights pic from last night, the first of December. Last night we started early to avoid the clouds, and to get the early show, the nicest one. We started having only red aurora, and later came the huge show. The red was very saturated and visible with eyes. We had an amazing evening. Reminder : aurora like that are rare and not every nights. It can happen any month between September and March.

This lantern, nice accessories for the pictures. Being honest I don’t really use it to give light while walking outside, the moon light reflecting on the snow or the northern light, are giving enough light to see during the night.

Special shape of the northern lights exploding over the head. Remember, the main color to see is the green, and red, purples are more rare :) also, the camera might get the aurora more saturated but when aurora is strong enough you can see the color :)

Picture of the road heading to the colorful northern lights. While driving it’s possible to see aurora but not as good as when you are outside without the light of the car. Remember; the main color to see is the green, and having the red is more rare :)

Some other pics of northern lights form the last aurora hunt. Yesterday it was cloudy everywhere so we didn’t go hunting. It’s good to know that aurora can’t be every nights, that’s why I use to recommend to stay 5-7nights here to increase the opportunity to see aurora.

Picture of northern lights from last night. We had the first aurora very early, in the afternoon. And then we continued the tour during evening because some stronger aurora where arriving. We had -31°C at the lowest, and some of the most beautiful shape of aurora I have ever seen. I will share more in the coming days !

A set of some pictures from last night. We had some nice aurora before the clouds cover all sky. We could see the aurora moving just a bit and with some pink. The purple color on the pics was not visible with eye, just with cam.

Picture of a nice colorful aurora borealis. November started with some aurora, and with a strong aurora visible even in southern countries, but the clouds are here, the snow starts to cover the land.
November can be difficult for clouds and aurora hunt but it is still possible to see aurora when the weather allows it.

Pictures of northern light and clouds from the 5th of November 2023. One of the biggest aurora event, allowing other southern countries of Europe to see it. Unfortunately the majority of Lapland was under clouds… I drove more than 700km one way to find this hole in the sky… we could see the red with eye but the clouds were too massive.

Picture of beautiful aurora from September, colorful. An aurora like that is not often, be aware of that. Now we will start another part of the aurora season, when it’s more often cloudy, and when the snow starts covering the land :)
Do you want to join my aurora hunt ? I would recommend you to stay 5-7 nights in Rovaniemi to get more chance to see aurora. 2 nights is very risky if it’s cloudy it will make it impossible :)

Picture of a colorful aurora borealis on the top of the head. Last night we didn’t go hunting the aurora because of the bad weather conditions in all over Lapland. Let’s hope to have more clear sky in the coming days. So I show you a nice aurora we had some weeks ago, when the red was visible with eye (it’s rare).

Picture from the last aurora hunt, with an amazing aurora show. And the next night (yesterday), we didn’t have any aurora even if we had a clear sky. Lesson : from a night to another one, conditions can be very different, and so we can’t know so much in advance when is the best time :)
