The full FDA approval is the last resort to prove to Americans that the vaccine is safe and effective. In a June survey by KFF, three out of 10 unvaccinated Americans said that they would get vaccinated if the FDA fully approves the vaccine.

Will we now see a spike in vaccination rates as the delta variant continues to spread through communities?

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S., which is now recognized as a federal holiday. It’s the day in 1865 when the last remaining enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were notified of the Emancipation Proclamation and freed.

Today is a recognition and celebration of freedom, but also a reminder that we must continue fighting to create an equal and equitable society.

SCOTUS’s 7-2 ruling will allow the Affordable Care Act to live on. Several republican-led states challenged the constitutionality of the ACA, specifically a part called the Individual Mandate.

SCOTUS said the plaintiffs did not have legal standing, meaning they couldn’t sufficiently show they’ll be “injured” by the law if it continued to stand.

Yesterday was and not everyone was allowed to donate. Discriminatory policies exist barring men who have s*x with men (MSM) from donating blood. Even after last year’s FDA announcement that MSM need to wait 3 months, rather than 1 year, to donate blood, this only applies to the latest s*xual encounter which essentially means any gay or bis*xual man having regular s*x, even in a monogamous relationship, can never donate blood.

The national blood-supply is running dangerously low, much due to the cancellation of blood drives throughout the pandemic. Revising the current restriction could result in as many as 615,000 additional pints of blood donated every year.

Novavax adds to the list of Covid-19 vaccines with high efficacy. In a clinical trial with nearly 30,000 people from the U.S. and Mexico, Novavax’s protein-based vaccine showed a 90.4% overall efficacy.

This is great news.

However, the U.S. vaccine market is saturated with Pfizer-BioNtech, Moderna and J&J vaccines. So, Novavax’s future in the U.S. is uncertain and the company would probably win its first authorization outside of the U.S in places like Britain, the European Union, India and South Korea.

Despite controversy over its efficacy, the FDA today approved the first new Alzheimer’s treatment in nearly twenty years. Experts have continued to debate the shaky data regarding the drug’s effectiveness. This decision is sure to alter standards of evaluating experimental therapies in the future.

Amid the decreasing number of new Covid-19 cases, the CDC has announced that fully vaccinated Americans no longer need to wear masks or physically distance indoors or outdoors, in nearly all circumstances. At this time, around 60% of Americans have at least one dose of the vaccine and adolescents ages 12 to 15 are also now eligible for Pfizer’s vaccine. Lastly, the Biden administration announced a new partnership with Lyft and Uber to offer free rides to vaccination sites.

A new partnership between the government and ride-share companies, Lyft and Uber, will increase accessibility to vaccines. This partnership will bring the U.S. closer to its goal to vaccinate 70% of Americans by July 4th.

Pfizer’s Q1 revenue beat analysts expectations. Last year, Pfizer made a decision to produce its vaccines at a profit, unlike rival manufacturers such as AstraZeneca and J&J. Pfizer was also the only company to not accept federal funds for vaccine production.

Against medical guidance, the Arkansas Senate voted to ban healthcare for trans youth. This includes threatening the medical licenses of healthcare providers who provide puberty blockers, cross-s*x hormones or gender-affirming surgeries. AR is the first state to pass this ban, but 16 other states are pursuing similar trans healthcare ban bills.

A new study by Gray et al. published in American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, finds the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines are safe and effective in pregnant and lactating women, who can also pass protective antibodies to newborns. *This study began prior to the approval of J&J’s Covid-19 vaccine.
