A Shadow that Never Leaves, for Solo Piano, by Elizabeth Gelinas (Eliza G).

In The Dhammapada, Buddha shares wisdom in short, powerful verses that can act as a guide to achieving enlightenment through wholesome practice. He explains what will become of disciplined minds, and what selfish minds will lack. The verse, “Our life is shaped by our mind, we become what we think. Suffering follows an evil thought like the wheels of a cart follow the oxen that draws it. Our life is shaped by our mind, we become what we think. Joy follows a pure thought like a shadow that never leaves”, discusses the power of intention and encourages students to cleanse their mind of negative thoughts. Living and thinking in a moral and ethical way in the absolute sense rather than by the standards of any particular time or society. Embracing the natural pulse of mantras and the flow of Buddha’s verses opened my eyes to freer forms of structure. The duality of the verse, implications of both evil and pure thoughts, is reflected by the difference in sonorities surrounding the main theme when it reappears. Chords that were once dissonant and heavy become cheerful and empowering.

Variations on a Theme of Euphemia Allen, by Michael Cutler (Performed by Michael McKay) is a set of variations on a very, very familiar theme: published as “The Celebrated Chop Waltz,” by Arthur di Lulli, it was written by one Euphemia Allen and better known as “Chopsticks.” The introduction is a Lisztian flourish, leading almost comically to the theme in its complete form. The variations are free-form, each self-contained, and exploring some aspect of the theme. The first two are shorter and more dancing, being characteristically waltz-like. The third breaks from the waltz to play with a little motif in 4/4 time, while the fourth is slower and more sentimental. A gigue-like fifth variation in a minor key includes a mandatory Dies Irae reference, and follows straight into a lighter major-key piece that follows organically out of the gigue. Two slower elaborations then lead into a scherzo and a fughetta, which flows into a chorale in the style of Mendelssohn’s E Minor Prelude and Fugue. Finally, a virtuosic coda which quotes Beethoven’s first sonata and calls back to the introduction rounds out the work. The whole is about a twenty-minute vehicle for showmanship, for a pianist with a good sense of humour.

Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996)

Ella Fitzgerald - “The First Lady of Song”, “Queen of Jazz”, “Lady Ella” - was the most well known female jazz singer for more than 50 years. Among other things, she was known for her phrasing, impeccable diction, and scatting.

Fitzgerald first received notoriety and musical success when playing with the Chick Webb Orchesetra. They toured often and performed across the country, but most often at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. The other jazz greats that had the pleasure of working with her were Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman, among others.

She was not immune to discrimination. Fitzgerald’s manager, Norman, refused to accept any sort of discrimination at hotels, restaurants, or any other destination while on tour. While touring in Dallas, though, a police squad barged backstage to hassle the performers, and arrested everyone, including Ella, Dizzy Gillespie, and Illinois Jacquet. She received overwhelming support from numerous celebrity fans after the incident, including an irate Marilyn Monroe.

President Ronald Reagan awarded Fitzgerald the National Medal fo Arts in 1987. By the end of her career, she had recorded over 200 albums, and amassed 14 Grammy awards. She gave her final performance in 1991 at Carnegie Hall, the 26th time she performed there.

On June 15, 1996, Ella Fitzgerald passed away after complications with her diabetes and multiple surgeries. Signs of remembrance appeared from all over the world, including a Marquee at the Hollywood Bowl Theater reading “Ella, we will miss you.”

Notable recordings include “A-Tisket A-Tasket”, “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Go That Swing)”, “Dream a Little Dream of Me”, and “Cheek to Cheek”, among many others.

Throughout , we’ll be highlighting just some of the most prolific composers who changed music as the world knew it. We begin with the “King of Ragtime”, Scott Joplin.

Scott Joplin (1868 - 1917) was one of the most extraordinary and influential black composers of the turn of the century; his name has since become synonymous with an entire genre. Joplin spent most of his life trying to become a composer of “serious music”, and in doing so, composed two operas: A Guest of Honor (1903) and Treemonisha (1911), the second of which posthumously earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1976.

Joplin died before his music had reached any recognizable fame, and today we have little left of him. Had it not been for a resurgence and rediscovering of his music in the 1970s, he may have never been as celebrated as he is today. We remember Scott Joplin for being persistent in finding his musical voice in a world that did not always welcome him; his jaunty rhythms, unique harmonies, and complex bass patterns that are still imitated by composers to this day.
