The Raft Captain for the Rio Grande who has led for over 39 years and represents over 100 members speaks out against the mining in Jamaica's largest river causing oil spills and damaging the ecological integrity of the river. The Captain asserts that the river belongs to the indigenous people of Portland and not the GOJ and makes a public call for the cessation of mining in the river. The river is sacred to the Maroons of the Rio Grande Valley.
The Rio Grande is part of the Blue and John Crow Mountains UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the only mixed site in the Caribbean recognized for the cultural heritage of the Maroons. The Rio Grande is a source of livelihood for indigenous people of the area and supply water, food and income for the Maroons. The abeng being blown at the first Maroon township meeting to be broadcast live
The Abeng being sounded before the FIRST Maroon Township Meeting to be broadcast over the airwaves
The Abeng
The abeng is a side-blown horn and a Maroon technology introduced by Grandy Nanny and her family that enabled communication across long distances. The abeng is part of a complex communication system that passes along coded messages known only to the Maroons. This improved on the existing technology and gave the Maroons a greater range of communication.
A township meeting according to custom and traditional Maroon law is lawfully called to order at the sound of the abeng. It legitimizes the township meeting in the same manner as the Royal Mace legitimizes a sitting of Houses of Parliament, Jamaica . Without the proper sounding of the abeng, a meeting cannot be legally valid under traditional Maroon law. The township meeting is the highest body, and the final step for the ratification of decisions under Maroon law. The Maroons have a pure direct democracy that is maintained by township meetings and the township is the highest body of governance in Maroon society, where the will of the People is supreme law.
Vox Populi Vox Dei, the Voice of the People is the Voice of God.
Broadcast Courtesy of Andre Stephens and Pawdna Draw TV for helping to make Maroon history as last night's township meeting was the first Maroon township meeting to ever be broadcasted over the airwaves.
