Srinagar City Gets Its 1st Bus Boat To Revive Water Transport

Srinagar, July 18

In order to decongest roads in Srinagar city and to revive the centuries old mode of water transport, Kashmir's first bus boat started its trial run in the Jhelum River on Friday.

The state of the art bus boat has a seating capacity of 35 passengers and 5 crew members.

"The crew includes a driver, and four rescuers. "The bus boat operates from Pantha Chowk in Srinagar outskirts to Qamarwari, on the downstream Jhelum river.

"In order to revive the historical water transport and to decongest the roads in Srinagar city, the bus boat is an ideal option.

"At present we have six floating docks on Jhelum banks to pick up passengers and to deboard them", said Imran Malik, director of Sukhna Enterprises, who procured the bus boat for the local tourism department.

"There was a global tender from the J&K tourism development corporation (JKTDC) and we were successful tenderers.

"There are three components to this in this Rs 2 crore project. The bus boat which we imported from New Zealand, the rescuer boat which is from Dubai and the luxury boat which is from the US.

"Six floating docks are from Taiwan".

He said the initiative has been taken under the Prime Minister's developmental package (PMDP) called Swadesh Darshan.

Malik is presently operating the bus boat on a trial basis for the tourism department.

"From tomorrow (Monday) we will start training the staff of the tourism department to operate the bus boat and once trained, the department will operate the project on its own", he said.

Malik says at least 3 more bus boats will be brought in to run in the Jhelum river once the idea of water transport picks up with the locals.

"It is an absolutely value addition travel. You reach your destination without any hassles, you don't add to air pollution, you save fuel and you also enjoy the beauty of the river and its banks", he said. (IANS)

Srinagar, July 18: The government on Sunday allowed higher educational institutions and skill development centers in Jammu and Kashmir to considered “phased re-opening” for onsite learning after July 31 subject to the vaccination status of the students and staff.

In an order by Chief Secretary and Chairperson, State Executive Committee, public and private educational institutions have been also permitted to seek personal attendance of “limited vaccinated staff for administrative purposes.”

The order was issued after a detailed review of the current COVID situation in Jammu and Kashmir by the Chief Secretary with the Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Medical Education; Principal Secretary to Government, Home; Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and other officers of Jammu and Kashmir on July 16.

“It was observed that as compared to the previous week, while significant improvement has been made by some districts in respect of the (various) parameters, there is need for further improvement in interest of public health in all districts,” the order underlined.

Besides, some districts need intense efforts to reach desired levels, it said. “It has also been seen that the daily cases in the past few days have shown an uneven trend. As such, there is a need to continue with existing COVID containment measures in these districts,” the order, a copy of which lies with GNS, added.

While previous orders on covid-19 contained have been ordered to remain in force till further directions, Deputy Commissioners have been authorized to allow shops to open at 6 00 am instead of 7.00 am to avoid rush on 19th and 20th of July as per their assessment.

“All Deputy Commissioners shall keep active track of the positivity rates in these Blocks and consider implementing stricter control measures in closed clustered spaces like Public/ Private Offices, Community halls, Malls, Bazaars etc., in case weekly positivity rate goes beyond 4 percent in these Blocks.”
The three - "T" protocol of testing, tracking and treating, besides vaccination, needs to strengthened in these Blocks, the order said. “The proportion of RT-PCR tests in the total mix should be scaled up, on best effort basis, to 70 % or more, excluding travelers.”

US forces pull-out from Afghanistan may push in some ‘militants’ to Kashmir: Army

Srinagar, Jun 25: General officer Commanding (GoC) of Srinagar-based army’s 15 Corps Lieutenant General D P Pandey Friday said that pull of US forces from Afghanistan may push in some militants into Kashmir but army was ready to deal with any misadventure on LoC and the hinterland.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a passing—out parade at JAKLI Regimental centre Rangreth on Srinagar on Srinagar outskirts, the GoC Pandey said that some people who are fond of freedom (Azadi) must ponder over what is the situation across LoC and the Pakistan—Afghanistan border. “Whatever happened 30 year ago caused a huge distress to the people of Kashmir. Yes, there is a possibility that US forces pull-out from Afghanistan may push some militants into Kashmir,” the GoC said as per news agency KNO. “But situation is not what it was 30 years ago. We are ready and fully geared up to foil all bids and to face every challenge whether on LoC or the hinterland.”

The GoC 15 Corps was replying to a query whether US—forces pull—out from Afghanistan would have some sort of fall on Kashmir.

He said that for the army, the first priority is always conventional training, then counter insurgency operations or counter infiltration operations. “Wherever police need us for any kind of operation we are joining them,” GoC Pandey said. “Ceasefire or no ceasefire, our eyes are set on our enemy. We are ready to face any misadventure be that on the LoC or in the hinterland. We are ready to respond at every level effectively.”

Replying to a query that a lot of weaponry is coming for the army, the GoC said that it was a normal process which is part of annual turn—over. “Given the Chinese situation on the LAC, a balance of forces is being maintained,” he said.

The army officer said that earlier under narco—modules, only money would come but now drugs are also coming. “J&K police is dealing with the narco-infiltration very effectively and a lot of drugs have been seized. It’s high time for parents, civil society, and teachers to keep focusing on children so that they stay away from drugs,” he said.

Asked whether the recent dialogue between J&K politicians and New Delhi would have any impact on Kashmir’s security situation, GoC Pandey said that security situation and political process are two different things. “Dialogue is an ongoing process which is always on. Security situation is a different matter that is being tackled at different levels,” he said.

On militancy in Kashmir, the GoC said that unless the militant network goes, there is a need for a security grid so that people come out and live in a peaceful atmosphere. Asked about the status of infiltration on LoC in Kashmir, he said so far there is zero infiltration this year but launch pads are active. “Whatever happens on the LoC will be dealt with effectively and professionally,” he said.

Mohammad Amir set to return to international cricket after talks with PCB chief Wasim Khan

Pakistan’s left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir is set to make a comeback in international cricket after Pakistan Chief Executive Officer, Wasim Khan, had an interaction with the 29-year-old at his residence before the second leg of the Pakistan Super League.

Amir had taken the cricket world by storm by announcing his retirement abruptly last year as he imposed severe allegations against the Pakistan team management and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq. He had also revealed that he was not getting his due respect in the team and by the management, which were the reasons behind him losing interest to play for the country. The 29-year-old had later said that he will be available once the current management changes.

Pakistan chief, meanwhile, had said in a recent interaction that Amir is a valuable player for the team and that he was making an effort to sort out the issues between him and the management.

“I also made it clear to him that the path he adopted was not right as a senior player. I think Amir is a valuable player for us even now and we will now make efforts to bring about a rapprochement between him and the coaches,” Khan had said as quoted by Times on India.

Mohammad Amir’s rift with the PCB
Controversies have been a part of Amir’s career since the early days. He had to undergo a ban after he was found guilty of match-fixing during Pakistan’s tour of England in 2010. After serving a five-year ban, he did make a comeback for the team, though only to be in a rift with the cricketing board.

He confessed about being tortured by the management and not being in a correct mental state to play for the country. “Right now, I am leaving cricket. I am being mentally tortured. I don’t think, I will be able to handle this kind of torture because I have been tortured a lot from 2010 to 2015,” he said in a video late last year.

However, he has expressed his desire to be a part of the Pakistan national team again. “Whenever I speak anything, people label that as an explanation. My decision to retire was taken in a bad light by many, but Wasim Khan coming to my place means a lot for me. If things go as per plans, I will play for the nation again,” he said.

Iran Approves First Homegrown COVID-19 Vaccine COVIran Barekat

TEHRAN: Iran’s state TV is reporting that the country has approved an emergency use of its first domestically developed coronavirus vaccine that could bring the hardest-hit country in the Middle East closer to inoculating its citizens against COVID-19.

The emergency authorisation was approved after the country faced with problems from importing enough vaccines.

The TV quotes the health minister, Saeed Namaki as saying, “Permission to use the Iranian vaccine COVIran Barekat was issued yesterday.” Iranian pharmaceutical company Shifafarmed made the vaccine based on deactivated virus, and the first study of the safety and effectiveness began in late December.

Iran has also said it is working on a vaccine with cooperation from a foreign country. Mr. Namaki said that another vaccine, produced jointly by Iran and Cuba, will join the country’s vaccine package in the next week.

Iran’s local vaccine research has gained urgency as officials allege that heavy American sanctions will hamper the Islamic Republic’s mass inoculation efforts.

Although Iran retains routes to vaccines, including through its participation in COVAX, an international initiative designed to distribute vaccines to countries regardless of their wealth, international banks and financial institutions are reluctant to deal with Iran for fear of American penalties.

Under COVAX rules, Iran could at a maximum order enough doses to vaccinate half of its 82 million people. (AP)
