Blog entry #1:The last Princess"(Binukot)
By: Marouph Alijam

Binukot is a pre colonial Visayan tradition. It is most popular among the people of central Panay or Panay bukidnon. In their traditional practices,The chosen one is secluded, well-kept, pampered, treasured, and to some level revered. The female “binukot” is treated as a princess and are being kept away from men other than her father. They are being prepared to be married off to a man who can afford the dowry. A female “binukot” is treated as holy or untouchable because of her beauty. Binukot must be well preserve and treat worthily.

A Binukot is said to be the most beautiful maiden in her community. A binukot is not exposed to the sun, not allowed to work in the farm, and certainly not allowed to be seen by others apart from her immediate family. A binukot’s feet are not allowed to touch the ground; to preserve their purity. they are treated like a princess in a fairy tale with their long hair being combed by servants. they are only allowed to wear the best clothes and given only the best food in the mountains.

Lola Ishang was one of the Binukot. She was only 5 years old when she was chosen to be a Binukot. She was never allowed to go outside all by herself without any protection or companions. She could barely see the sunlight as she only stayed in her little hut. She might be a prisoner from others perspective but for her she was treated as princess. People from the tribe was serving Lola by not allowing her to eat any foods except nutritious foods. She was being combed and kept. Binukots are never allowed to choose the man they like yet their parents will be the one to take decisions. The role of the Binukot is to memorize all the traditional folklore, which is handed down from generation to generation only by the spoken word. What makes the Binukots even more important is that they are the only ones who will ever have the honor of memorizing and retelling the epics and the stories. When there is event Binukots usually sing whereas they sing about stories or histories that is interrelated about their tradition that would takes up to almost 2 months. Although Binukots doesn't know how to write, they supposedly express their histories through singing.

In world war 2, there was a tragedy in which the Binukot were gradually depleted because of the Japanese invasion. One Binukot was found n**e and possibly r***d. Now, Binukots are slowly dying because of “choice”. Some women from the tribe do not want to be a Binukot as they cannot have freedom. There are still women from the tribe who is willing to take the crown because they want to preserve their traditional practices.

Overall, In modern media we use article, news paper, news, radio, internet etc. The Binukots are the traditional media of its cultural tribe as they are considered as the "Source of Information" by retelling or singing stories epics and histories. The people, Binukots are part of media. Although there will be a lot of people that will not believe of what will Binukot say because of our custom that is we only rely in modern media, the only difference from them is Binukots is their media, their "Source of Information".
