Tennessee State legislature is proposing new laws regarding peaceful demonstrations. Some people in the Volunteer State’s congress want to pass draconian measures to combat the 1st Amendment. Many, like Sen. Stevens, believe the constitution only applies to Americans of European descent. It is times like this when I am glad that someone of his character actually had access to a microphone. This perfect display of ignorance exposes Sen. Stevens insecurities. There is much debate over Southern culture and what exactly constitutes Southern heritage. Even a New Yorker who currently lives in Washington, D.C., is offering his erroneous opinions on the matter. Well, I am from the South. And there is nothing more Southern than high blood pressure, diabetes, vegetation, lightning bugs, mason jars, religious indoctrination, and gospel music.

If we want to raise statues, how about we erect a giant deep-fried Oreo. But if we’re talking about people, I believe Dorothy Height and John Lewis would be a great start. Southern culture is about defying the odds in the face of oppression. And no one embodies that spirit more than Black people.

The Freeman World Experiment is not just about a podcast, or the dissemination of interesting historical facts; it is about affecting change in the world.

On last weekend, I was blessed to be able to award $1,000 each to Tamesha Russell and James Fisher, aka Coach. These two represent individuals in the Nashville community who suffered from the March 3rd tornado.

With the help of (Community Changers) and (Executive Director of the Northwest YMCA), we are identifying those most in need. To date, we have distributed $3,000 in tornado relief. This may not be big, but this is our attempt to assuage the damage and loss many have experienced.

Our goal is to distribute fifty $1,000 checks. That’s right, $50,000! Your help is greatly appreciated and needed to reach this target. We are on a mission. Today is Nathan Bedford Forrest Day in the Volunteer State. Forrest is truly one of the most vile and detestable individuals in Tennessee history. And his bust still resides inside the TN State Capitol (not to mention the statue of him on a horse in front of the Cordell Hull building).

Even though the TN Capitol Commission elected 9-2 to remove the bust, the final decision may not come until February of 2021. The two despicable subhumans who elected against its removal are (Republican, District 23, Williamson County) and Representative Matthew Hill (Republican, District 7, Jonesborough, TN, which is part of Washington County).

All “White” Supremacist iconography inside and around the Capitol should be removed, including Sen. Jack Johnson and Rep. Matthew Hill.

These last two episodes have been especially taxing for me. There is a certain level of anger I must navigate on a daily basis as a Black person in this country. The psychological toll of just leaving the house to perform mundane activities is substantial. A History of Violence Part 1 was a raw response to the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. The volume and anger in my voice are noticeable. Although full of research and data, my delivery may have caused the message to be rejected by some.

Albeit still filled with a great bit of rage at the perpetual trespasses of this nation, I am mostly saddened for the people who allow ignorance and misguided hatred to direct their acts of aggression and violence against people of African descent. A History of Violence Part 1 was all about defunding the police. Part 2 is all about the abolishment of police altogether.

As Alex Vitale also states, “The reality is that the police exist primarily as a system for managing and even producing inequality by suppressing social movements and tightly managing the behaviors of poor and nonwhite people: those on the losing end of economic and political arrangements.”

So, when I say we should abolish the police altogether, this is not my attempt at joining the chorus of some faddish rallying cry. On the contrary, when I say abolish the police, I am chanting with the spirits of my ancestors who knew that their livelihoods were inexorably tied to the presence and conduct of police. Put simply, abolish the police means that I, along with others like me, will have a better chance at survival.
