Did you know? DTP prevents diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis which can spread from person to person or through entering of bacteria inside cuts and wounds. This vaccine provides immunity especially for infants and young children.

Chickenpox (varicella) ⚠️ is an acute infectious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is a common childhood disease, causing symptoms such as rashes, fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, and headache, among others. In the early 1970s, Dr. Michiaki Takahashi 🥼🩺 successfully developed the first live attenuated vaccine for chickenpox—it’s called the varicella vaccine! 💉

Fortunately, depression can be treated through therapy and/or medications, one of which is tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) 💊

That's why we, Group 7, are here to shed light on the powerful and potentially risky world of heterocyclics and unicyclics – the anti-psychotic and antidepressant medications that many patients rely on to manage their symptoms. 🧠💊

But what are heterocyclics and unicyclics, and how do they work? What are their potential side and adverse effects, and how can patients take control of their medication journey? 🤔

Our section, 2BMT, has done the hard work of researching and presenting the answers to these questions in an engaging digital poster infographic. Mental health remains a leading public health concern, both nationally and globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health (DOH), nearly 1 billion people worldwide and 3.6 million Filipinos continue to face and battle mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety disorders. Among the available treatment options and complementary and alternative approaches, antidepressant medications are known to be the standard treatment for such health conditions—one of which being monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

MAOIs increase neurotransmitter levels, such as that of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine, by inhibiting the enzyme action of monoamine oxidase, ultimately improving brain cell communication. Individuals taking MAOIs generally experience a better mood. However, MAOIs are often the last drug prescribed to treat depression as they carry more side effects than other antidepressants.

Recent advances in the fields of organ donation and transplantation have introduced new hope for people experiencing organ failure and for the treatment of serious diseases. Each year, organ transplantation offers a renewed chance for a full and active life to thousands of children and adults. However, there have been a number of issues that have come along with it, with the most frequently raised ones being about the ethical and legal ramifications.

As the need for organ donation increases, it is essential that we tackle the ethical and legal challenges that arise in various countries and cultures. With this, Block 2B-MT of UST-FOP is one with the scientific community in drawing attention to this concern, bringing about a webinar titled “Organ Donation and Transplantation in a Global Context: Exploring the Ethical and Legal Challenges in Different Countries and Cultures,” on April 1, 2023, at 10:00 AM.

Did you know that Intestinal capillariasis is a parasitic infection brought on by the roundworm Capillaria philippinensis? The Philippines and Thailand are frequent locations for C. philippinensis. Other Asian nations, such as the Middle East, and Colombia have also seen some cases. To prevent yourself from acquiring this infection, make sure you avoid consuming raw or undercooked fish and properly cook and store your food.

Monkeypox is out the box! 🌏

This year, cases of monkeypox were reported outside African regions where the disease was endemic. Upon reading this, you might experience deja-vu, as similar to the COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged the world, Monkeypox had also spread to different continents such as Europe, North America, and Australia. The Department of Health (DOH) was able to detect the first confirmed case of monkeypox in the Philippines last July 29, which was only a few days after when the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the growing global monkeypox outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Given its rapid spread, one should be knowledgeable of what Monkeypox is—from the description, origin, and statistics, to the signs and symptoms, diagnosis, transmission, prevention, and treatment. What is Monkeypox? Will it drive us back into our homes under another lockdown? Or can we fight another impending pandemic with information and safety precautions before it’s too late?
