Indy Seibukan Karate Indy Seibukan Karate
We teach traditional Okinawan Karate, an art rooted in discipline, respect, and self-mastery.

Our lineage traces directly to Okinawa through Grandmaster Zenpo Shimabukuro, preserving the teachings as they were meant to be passed down.

Seminar Recap

Last year’s seminar was all about refining technique.

The takeaways were clean, efficient movements eliminating wasted motion and hitting the exact standards expected in kata and basics. From head to toe, everything has a purpose. Good teaching points to bring back to our group in Indy.

Seminars aren't just training. It was a recalibration.

We got clear on what the standard looks like—and how to get there.

I miss Washington.
Training with old friends, familiar kata under unfamiliar skies.
Waterfalls, trees, silence—you don’t get that everywhere.
Sometimes the place teaches you as much as the people do.

I'm grateful for everyone's support on my big test day. They helped me reflect on the concept of 'ascending the spiral staircase' from Moving Toward Stillness. This idea resonates with me as it illustrates how martial artists revisit and refine techniques, concepts, and kata at increasingly deeper levels. Though they may appear to return to familiar ground, their understanding has matured, much like climbing a spiral staircase and passing the same points from a new, elevated perspective. Mastery is a continuous journey of refinement, where even the fundamentals yield fresh insights over time.

Grandmaster Zempo Shimabukuro & Zenshin Shimabukuro
A pleasure to meet these two and train with top tier Karate-ka. Learned a lot from both of them and also took notes on their thoughts and philosophy on karate and life.

I’ve been practicing Naihanchi for over 10 years now and I’m still teaching myself things about this form. A humbling reminder of the concept of the eternal student.

Keep pushing forward, and keep pursuing truth.
