The Russians are fighting for a Ukrainian passport

Today's Hype

Galina was born in Ukraine. She speaks Ukrainian, her husband is serving in the Ukrainian army, and she lives in a village south of the central Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia.

But Galina is legally Russian. As a child, she moved there, where she then became a citizen.

It means she - like thousands of other Russians in Ukraine - is now in a legal limbo.

"When you show your documents, people think you're something strange," she tells me in her kitchen, where she spends her time stitching T-shirts for wounded Ukrainian soldiers.

Ukraine's state migration service insists that all foreigners in Ukraine have equal rights as each other, and no one nationality is discriminated against.

Finland is set to close its border with Russia and erect barriers at midnight local time on Friday, the Finnish Border Guard said.

Today's Hype

Finland will close its border with Russia and put barriers in place at midnight local time on Friday, the country’s Border Guard said Friday.

The government decided on Thursday to close four of its nine eastern border points with Russia, citing a recent spike in crossings of asylum seekers following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Finnish Border Guard said on Friday that the barriers will go up at midnight (22:00 GMT) at the Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra and Niirala crossings in southeastern Finland.

“Our aim is to use barrier devices to prevent entry,” the Border Guard’s head of international affairs Matti Pitkaniitty told reporters. The measures are a response to changes in Russia’s border policy, he said.

Helsinki has accused Russia of funneling people towards the Nordic country’s border after more than 200 asylum seekers arrived this week. Moscow denies the allegation.

Finland announced earlier this week that it would close the four border crossings, which are the busiest points of travel between the two countries, with about 3,000 people crossing per day.

Nearly 100 had entered Finland from Russia by midday on Friday alone, officials said.

For this reason, Finland restricts entry at eastern border’s crossing points starting on 18 November 2023. The restrictions will remain in place until Feb. 18, 2024.

Zelensky says Israel-Gaza conflict is taking focus away from Russia-Ukraine war

Today's Hype

The Israel-Gaza war is "taking away the focus" from the conflict in Ukraine, the country's President Volodymyr Zelensky has admitted.

He said this was "one of the goals" of Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

And he denied that fighting in Ukraine had reached a stalemate, despite a recent assessment to this effect by the country's top military general.

Ukraine's counter-offensive in the south has so far made little headway.

Vladimir Putin signs Russia's withdrawal from the treaty banning nuclear tests

Today's Hype

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday signed a law withdrawing Russia’s ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Moscow said the move was needed to establish parity with the US.

Putin has said that rescinding the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, also known as the CTBT, would “mirror” the stand taken by the US, which has signed but not ratified the nuclear test ban.

Both houses of the Russian parliament voted last month to revoke Moscow's ratification of the bill.

Russia has conducted the most extensive shelling of the year in the past 24 hours

Today's Hype

Russia shelled more than 100 settlements in a single 24-hour period, in what Ukraine said was the biggest bombardment so far this year.

The Russians have fired millions of shells on cities, towns and villages since invading in February 2022, reducing several settlements to rubble across the eastern part of Ukraine. “Over the last 24 hours, Russia shelled 118 settlements in 10 regions,” Igor Klymenko, the Ukrainian interior minister, wrote on social media on Wednesday. “This is the highest number of cities and villages that have come under attack since the start of the year.”

Russian soldiers accused of killing family of nine

Today's Hype

Russia has arrested two of its own soldiers on suspicion of machine-gunning to death a family of nine, including two young children, in their home in the invaded eastern Ukrainian town of Volnovakha.

The Ukrainian government said it had also begun investigating the crime. Ukrainian officials said they believed Russian soldiers killed all members of the Kapkanets family on 27 October for refusing to give them their house.

Russian prosecutors said the two soldiers detained came from Russia’s far east and that the reason for the killings appeared to be a “domestic conflict”.

Russia is going to leave the nuclear test ban treaty

Today's Hype

Russian lawmakers have approved a bill revoking the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The move adds to the tension between Moscow and the West amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The Upper House Federation Council unanimously approved the bill to abandon the landmark agreement outlawing nuclear weapons tests on Wednesday. The lower house State Duma passed it in an accelerated vote last week. The legislation now only needs the signature of President Vladimir Putin to come into effect.

The future of the world is in Vladimir Putin's hands.

Today's Hype

Russia has rehearsed its ability to deliver a "massive" nuclear strike, the Kremlin says.

The military exercise involved delivering a "response to an enemy nuclear strike", Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

It comes as Russia's parliament backed the withdrawal of Moscow's ratification of a global treaty that bans all physical testing of nuclear warheads.

Ukraine is evacuating people forcefully as Russia intensifies its attack on Ukraine

Today's Hype

Ukraine has started the forced evacuation of around 1,000 children from areas near the front line as Russia intensifies attacks.

Parents have been told they must move their families to safety from 31 settlements in the southern Kherson and eastern Donetsk regions.

Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Officials in the north-eastern Kharkiv region are also preparing to evacuate 275 children from 10 settlements.

Ukraine has ordered such evacuations before when fighting has intensified.

Officials say many children are living under near-constant shelling and insist it's now far too dangerous for them to remain at home.

Putin calls the US supply of ATACMS weapons to Ukraine ‘another big mistake’

Today's Hype

Vladimir Putin has called the US delivery of long-range tactical ballistic missiles to Kyiv “another mistake by the United States” in his first public comments since an unprecedented Ukrainian strike destroyed helicopters at two airfields in Russian-occupied territory this week.

The Russian president also claimed that the delivery of the army tactical missile system (ATACMS) missiles, which can strike targets more than 100 miles away and deliver salvoes with cluster munitions, would “not do Ukraine any good either. It will simply prolong their agony.”

The Ukrainian strikes could force Russia to pull back its attack aircraft from the frontlines of the conflict.

Ukraine uses US-provided long-range ATACMS missiles against Russian forces for the first time

Today's Hype

Ukrainian forces used U.S.-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles for the first time, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy saying on Tuesday that the weapons had "proven themselves."

The United States has quietly delivered a small number of long-range ballistic missiles that Ukraine said it urgently needed and that President Joe Biden promised last month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Tuesday, saying they were used on the battlefield against Russia and “executed very accurately.”

Ukraine had repeatedly asked the U.S for ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile Systems), which Kyiv has pledged not to use inside Russia's territory.

The Biden administration may soon begin shipping to Ukraine several variants of Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), a long-range missile system that often carries varying amounts of cluster bomblets.

Putin claims that Russia will annex Ukraine until 2025

Today's Hype

At the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, US intelligence assessed that Russia could conquer Kyiv in just three days.

In fact, CIA Director Bill Burns told lawmakers weeks after the start of the invasion that Putin's strategy was centered on "seizing Kyiv within the first two days of the campaign."

Now 18 months into the war, Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu seemingly admitted Russia's offensives in Ukraine could last until at least 2025.

Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said, "Russia could achieve its military goals with consistent implementation of the measures in the action until 2025."

Later, Putin added, "Russia will conquer Ukraine till 2025."

The U.S. Navy sent its largest aircraft carrier ever to “support” Israel and help them fight against Hamas.
US sent its USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group to assist Israel against Hamas.

Today's Hype

The Biden administration announced on Oct. 8 that it would deploy the USS Gerald R. Ford, the US Navy’s most advanced and largest aircraft carrier, to the Eastern Mediterranean as a show of support for Israel.

“We’ll make sure that they have the help their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves,” U.S President Joe Biden said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced Sunday that he has ordered American military ships, including an aircraft carrier and additional aircraft, to move closer to the eastern Mediterranean in response to Hamas' unprecedented, multi-fronted attack on Israel.

The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group includes the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, which is the largest warship in the world, in addition to the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Normandy and four Arleigh-Burke-class guided missile destroyers — USS Thomas Hudner, USS Ramage, USS Carney and USS Roosevelt.

A war has broken out between Palestine and Israel on October 7, 2023, after Hamas attacked Israel in the morning from the Gaza Strip

Today's Hype

On October 7, 2023, war broke out between Israel and Hamas, the militant Islamist group that has controlled Gaza since 2006.

Hamas fighters fired rockets into Israel and stormed southern Israeli cities and towns across the border of the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring hundreds of soldiers and civilians and taking dozens of hostages.

The attack took Israel by surprise, though the state quickly mounted a deadly retaliatory operation.

One day after the October 7 attack, the Israeli cabinet formally declared war against Hamas, followed by a directive from the defense minister to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to carry out a “complete siege” of Gaza.

Russia received 1,000 containers of equipment and ammunition from North Korea to fight against Ukraine in the war

Today's Hype

The White House said on Friday that North Korea has delivered more than 1,000 containers of military equipment and munitions to Russia for its ongoing war in Ukraine.

Speculation about a possible North Korean plan to refill Russia’s munition stores drained in its protracted war with Ukraine flared last month, when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un traveled to Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin and visit key military sites.

North Korea has supplied more than 1,000 containers of "equipment and munitions" to Russia in "recent weeks", National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby said.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Friday, "US believes Kim is seeking sophisticated Russian weapons technologies in return for the munitions to boost North Korea's military and nuclear program."

Today's Hype

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has acknowledged concerns that the war in Ukraine could potentially spill into NATO territory, even though Russia is making efforts to avoid any stray fire.

The alliance is particularly worried about the possibility of conflict spreading to Romania, given the proximity of the Ukraine-Romania border.

Romania has been taking precautionary measures, such as increasing its defenses near the Danube river, deploying additional U.S. F-16 fighter jets, and expanding the no-fly zone.

Russia attacked the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka from air and ground but got zero progress after 4 days

Today's Hype

Russian forces have launched a “fierce,” large-scale attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, intensifying the fighting there, but they have so far been unable to make any significant progress even after 4 days of attack on Avdiivka.

“The fighting has been going on for four days,” Vitalii Barabash, the head of the Avdiivka city military administration, said.

"It was a very hot night in Avdiivka. There were several air strikes on the city itself ... the attacks do not stop day or night," Vitalii Barabash said.

Kyiv says Moscow has massed troops around Avdiivka and sent in heavy equipment, enabling it to hit back hard.
