👉A Dhaka court has issued summons against three BNP leaders, including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, asking him to appear before it on July 14 in a case filed on charge of instigating students for creating anarchy during movement for road safety in 2018.

📰Two others are BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed and its standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashek Imam on June 12 passed the order after accepting the probe report submitted by an inspector of Tejgaon Police Station.

⚖️During that movement on August 4, a reported audio clip of a telephonic conversation between Amir Khasru and an unknown person over intensifying the ongoing student movement went viral on Facebook and YouTube. In the probe report, the IO said that the charges brought against the three leaders were primarily proved and they should be brought under trial for their alleged involvement with instigating students for creating anarchy during road safety.

👉Torrential rains that have plagued Brazil's northeastern Pernambuco state since Tuesday have left at least 34 dead, 29 of which occurred over the previous day, according to the latest official update.

📰"From last Wednesday until midday this Saturday, 34 deaths were recorded in the state," said the Civil Defense in a statement.
Six others were killed in another landslide in the municipality of Camaragibe.

⚖️Two died in Recife and another in Jaboatao dos Guarar**es. The heavy rains have also forced almost 1,000 people to flee their homes due to the flooding and landslides.

👉27 civilians killed in DR Congo massacre At least 27 civilians were killed by members of a notorious rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday, the army and Red Cross said.
"When we arrived, it was already too late because the enemy ADF had already killed more than a dozen of our fellow citizens with machetes."

📰After the attack early Saturday, in the Beni region in North Kivu province, soldiers pursued the attackers and "neutralised seven ADF" and captured another, Mualushayi said.
The massacre comes after almost a month of relative calm in Beni, where the Congolese and Ugandan armies have been conducting joint military operations against the ADF since late November.

⚖️More than 120 armed groups roam eastern DRC and civilian massacres are common.
Despite this, authorities have been unable to stop the massacres which are regularly carried out on civilians.

👉The World Health Organization said on Sunday that monkey pox constitutes a "moderate risk" to overall public health at global level after cases were reported in countries where the disease is not typically found.

📰There has been no reported fatalities so far.
Monkeypox is an infectious disease that is usually mild, and is endemic in parts of west and central Africa.

⚖️It is spread by close contact, so it can be relatively easily contained through measures such as self-isolation and hygiene. Most of the cases reported so far have been detected in the UK, Spain and Portugal.

👉The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a woman for harassing and assaulting another woman at the Narsingdi Railway Station for wearing "indecent clothing" recently.

⚖️Marzia Akter Shila alias Shila alias Saima, who is the main accused in a case filed in the incident, was arrested from Shibpur area of Narsingdi on Monday (30 May).
She assumes different names at different times, she also goes by the name Shila or Saima.

📰The woman was forced to take shelter in the station master's room to save herself from the raging mob. The incident sparked mass criticism as many protested against it in person and on social media.

👉About 24% of the health professionals who were engaged in the treatment process of the Covid patients had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with doctors being the most affected followed by technologists and nurses, a study has revealed.

📰Of the total affected health workers, 24.30% were technologists and 22.8% nurses, said the study on "Psychological Impacts, Wellbeing, Associated Factors and Coping Strategies of Health Professionals during Covid-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh," conducted by the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM).
The health education directorate funded the study.

⚖️Most of the health professionals surveyed, had suffered from stress, tiredness and had sleeping problems.
Many of them were concerned about their relatives and families which intensified their anxiety. The study suggested counselling for healing the mental stress of health professionals.

👉Officials said that 26 passengers are missing after a ferry ran out of fuel and capsized in heavy weather off the coast of Indonesia on Saturday. The ferry carrying 43 people overturned on Thursday in the Makassar Strait, the waterway dividing the islands of Sulawesi and Borneo, according to the country's search and rescue agency.

⚖️Marine accidents are widespread in Indonesia, a 17,000-island Southeast Asian archipelago where safety regulations are sometimes weak. In 2018, more than 150 people perished after a ferry capsized in one of the world's deepest lakes on the island of Sumatra. A ferry carrying more than 800 passengers struck aground in shallow seas off the coast of East Nusa Tenggara province last week and was stranded for two days before being towed away. ⚖️Rail communications of Dhaka with the country's northern part and Khulna were restored 11 hours after derailment of a train at Gazipur's Kaliakoir upazila last night.
The train services resumed around 10am today after two bogies including the engine of Dhaka-bound Panchgarh Express from Panchgarh have been recovered, Stationmaster of Kaliakoir railway station Shahinur Rahman Shaheen confirmed.

📰The bogies were derailed soon after the train crossed Kaliakoir station around 9pm yesterday (May 27, 2022), halting train movement between Dhaka and northern districts and Khulna, said Joydevpur Railway Junction In-charge Rezaul Islam.

👉After the derailment, the rescue train from Dhaka reached to the site at 3am and started the salvage operation, our Gazipur correspondent reports quoting Rezaul.
Bangladesh Railway Divisional Manager (Pakshey Railway Division) Shahidul Islam told the Daily Star, "A four-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident."

📰Rasel and Shah Alam along with six others went to the Netherlands on May 9 to attend the training on management, handling and training of dogs.

📰The number of motorcycles under the ridesharing services is increasing in the capital, with authorities struggling to maintain order, giving rise to accidents, traffic chaos and passenger harassment.

⚖️At least three ridesharing service providers stopped running motorcycle services after the outbreak of the Covid-19 as they found that most of the motorcyclists registered with them were not using mobile apps and had been carrying passengers illegally.
As of May 19, 2022, 16 ridesharing companies registered with the BRTA, 28,600 vehicles have mandatory enlistment certificates.

👉Shah Mohammad Azad, who uses ridesharing services on contract to travel from Gulistan to Mirpur, alleged that the drivers providing service on contract normally become reckless as they try to reach destinations as soon as possible.

👉During his tenure as a soldier, Nazrul’s literary practice took a formal shape: his first poem Mukti, first story Bounduler Atmakahini, and a number of other writings such as Byathar Dan and Meher Nigar were published in that period. His life as a journalist began with the publication of the evening daily Nabajug in 1920. Dhaka University awarded the poet the honorary degree of DLitt in 1974 for his contribution to Bangla literature and culture.

👉The Khulna Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Court has sent a former inspector of Government Railway Police to jail after his surrender before the court in a case filed for violating a woman at GRP police station in 2019.

⚖️Judge Mahmuda Khatun of the passed the order after fugitive accused Osman Gani Pathan surrendered before the court and sought bail on Sunday. According to the case, when the woman was travelling to Jashore by a train and a female police officer and two other policemen detained her along with her daughter and took them to Khulna GRP station on August 8, 2019.

📰Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Telecom company have been cleared of the proceedings in the 176 cases filed by former employees of the company. The cases, which were heard at various courts, followed a protracted dispute with the company and its former workers over not reinstating them in their jobs and not sharing with them the profit of the company, according to lawyers for the workers and the employer.

⚖️Yunus’s lawyer Md Mustafizur Rahman Khan said that the courts cleared his client from the proceedings in the cases on various occasions as the complainants withdrew their cases after out-of-court settlements between the two parties.

📰‘All the cases against Yunus have been withdrawn as both parties have reached an agreement that Grameen Telecom will pay the 176 aggrieved workers Tk 400 crore in outstanding dues,’ lawyer Yousuf Ali, who appeared for the workers, said. The company bench of the High Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by workers seeking the liquidation of Grameen Telecom, the lawyer added.

👉The High Court on Monday asked the government to identify in four weeks the people or ‘government authorities’ whose negligence and failure caused financial loss and damage to countless customers of e-commerce platforms such as Evaly, E-orange, Dhamaka, Aleshamart.

⚖️The court asked the commerce ministry’s secretary to hold enquiries to identify the responsible persons or officials for taking action against them and recover the money of cheated e-commerce customers. The court also directed the Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate and ascertain the amount of money laundered by various e-commerce platforms through payment gateway companies.

📰The court also asked the commission to find out the money launderers to date. The country’s 25 e-commerce platforms transacted a total of Tk 11,359 crore through payment gateways, according to the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit probe report submitted to the High Court.

The blaze broke out on the Mercraft 2 at around 6:30am as it carried 134 passengers and crew from Polillo Island to Real in Quezon province on the main island of Luzon.

👉The High Court has rejected the bail pleas of four North South University trustees who applied for anticipatory bail to avoid arrest in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for embezzling Tk303.82 crore. The four members of the university's Board of Trustees are MA Kashem, Benazir Ahmed, Rehana Rahman, and Mohammad Shahjahan. The court heard their bail application on Wednesday and Thursday.

⚖️According to the case statement, the money was embezzled in the name of campus development with the consent of a few members of the Board of Trustees, without informing the University Syndicate, the University Grants Commission, and the Ministry of Education. The allegation against them is that despite actually buying the land at a lower price, for the nefarious purpose of embezzling money. They recorded a higher purchase price, only to take cash in a kickback from the seller in fixed deposit accounts (FDR) which they later wholly withdrew.

👉The High Court on Tuesday upheld a 10-year imprisonment sentence of Awami League parliamentarian Haji Mohammad Selim handed down by a subordinate court for amassing illegal wealth.

⚖️The High Court also reduced the fine imposed on Salim by half to Tk 10 lakh. He will have to spend one more year in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

📰In 2007, the ACC filed a case against Selim. On April 27, 2008, a Dhaka court jailed him for 13 years and fined Tk 20 lakh. Selim moved the High Court against the verdict. In 2011, the court overturned his sentence but the ACC later appealed against the lower court verdict. Later, the Appellate Division asked the High Court to re-hear the petition.

👉A former female student of Islamic University in Kushtia has brought a sexual harassment allegation against two Dhaka University students.
The victim filed a written complaint to the DU Proctor office yesterday (May 18, 2022).

⚖️The complaint stated that the DU students--Rakibul Hasan and Rafayet—sexually harassed her at Suhrawardy Udyan on the evening of May 16 while she was talking with her friends near the Shikha Chironton of the campus.

📰His department could not be known immediately. In the complaint, the former Islamic University student said "Three youths came to us on a motorcycle. Later, they tried to sn**ch our valuables," read the complaint.

👉The International Crimes Tribunal-1 today handed down death penalty to three Moulvibazar men for committing crimes during the Liberation War in 1971.

⚖️The three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam announced the verdict today, Prosecutor Sabina Yesmin Khan told.

📰The convicts are Abdul Aziz alias Habul, Abdul Mannan and Abdul Matin of Baralekha upazila in the district. Matin is still on the run while the two others are in jail at present.

⚖️An accident in the capital's Bijoy Sarani area caused a long tailback on the airport road this morning.

👉"There was a big accident between a bus and covered truck at Bijoy Sarani at around 3.30am. One side of the road got blocked because of the accident," Mohakhali Traffic Zone Assistant Commissioner Ashfaq Ahmed told The Business Standard.

👉A child who had gangrene on her thigh died early yesterday following a "wrong" operation at Makkah-Madina General Hospital in the capital's Mohammadpur. Police yesterday arrested three doctors and a nurse in this connection.

⚖️The deceased, Atika Akter Ayesha (6), was a first-grader. Ayesha's father Md Azim filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station against eight people, including the owner of the hospital, who is currently on the run.

👉The first war crimes trial since Moscow’s Ukraine invasion, against a Russian soldier accused of killing an unarmed civilian, gets underway in Kyiv on Wednesday. 📰Ukraine’s chief prosecutor Iryna Venediktova underlined the importance of the case for her country in a series of tweets. ‘We have over 11,000 ongoing cases of war crimes and already 40 suspects,’ she said. ‘By this first trial, we are sending a clear signal that every perpetrator, every person who ordered or assisted in the commission of crimes in Ukraine shall not avoid responsibility.’ Two Russian servicemen are due to go on trial from Thursday for firing rockets at civilian infrastructure in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

👉The man who ‘embezzled Tk 2,500cr’ was posing as an Indian, defrauding banks there too; Momen says he will be brought back to Bangladesh.

📰Prashanta Kumar Halder, who has been on the run from facing charges of money laundering since 2019, was arrested along with an associate in West Bengal yesterday.

⚖️In cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), PK Halder is accused of swindling multiple non-banking financial institutions out of more than Tk 2,500 crore. The ACC will take measures to bring him back to the country as soon as possible, said its chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah.

👉A r**e case was filed against two men for gang-raping a woman overnight while making her husband hostage at a mess in Gazipur's Tongi on May 13, 2022.

📰OC Javed said one of the accused Shafiqul called the victim's husband from his house and took him to the mess on May 13. Half an hour later, another accused Firoz Miah called the woman and r***d her overnight, he said. The accused duo hailed from the TNT Bazar area in Tongi.

⚖️The victim filed the r**e case at Purba Police Station in Tongi accusing Shafiqul Islam (40) and Firoz Miah (35). They released the victim and her husband the following day on the condition of not informing anyone about the incident.

👉About 24% of the health professionals who were engaged in the treatment process of the Covid patients had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with doctors being the most affected followed by technologists and nurses, a study has revealed. 📰Of the total affected health workers, 24.30% were technologists and 22.8% nurses, said the study on "Psychological Impacts, Wellbeing, Associated Factors and Coping Strategies of Health Professionals during Covid-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh," conducted by the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM). The health education directorate funded the study. ⚖️Most of the health professionals surveyed, had suffered from stress, tiredness and had sleeping problems. Many of them were concerned about their relatives and families which intensified their anxiety. The study suggested counselling for healing the mental stress of health professionals.

👉Two constables of the Bangladesh Police went missing in the Netherlands after attending a training programme there.
