Kim made a thing at work that reminded her of Scribe to Screen. How nice.
(It's a hint as to the topic of our next episode!)

Bonne année tout le monde!
At Scribe to Screen, we're starting 2021 as we mean to go on - with a book about how childhood imagination is fleeting and a film adaptation that thinks that that message is way too cheerful for the current day. It's Antoine de Saint Exupéry's 'Le Petit Prince' and the 2015 Netflix film directed by Mark Osborne, 'The Little Prince'. Charles' sister Amy also joins us to relive the text that made her IB experience so... unforgettable.

21/12/2020

'Twelfth Night' and 'She's the Man' feels like an appropriate note to sign off on for the holidays, wouldn't you say?

It's crazy to think that Kim and I made this channel a reality in April and have (somehow, barely) managed to make it work around jobs and searching for jobs and general 2020 anxiety. At the end of the day, we keep putting content out there because we love books and films, sharing the things we love (and love to criticise) with others, and receiving comments about your own opinions of the works we cover. We have many, many more ideas for content going into the new year and we hope you'll join us.

All that's left to say this holiday season is kick back, read a book, watch a film, and have fun arguing with family whether Baz Luhrmann could have done it better. Stay safe out there, folks.

Our next episode, planned to release just after Christmas, features another special guest: Amy Britton (no relation to Charles whatsoever, I swear). As a fellow book, TV, and film enthusiast and former French student, it simply made sense to force Amy to experience the text that haunted her IB studies all over again.

Look forward to that.

Shakespeare. 2006. Teen comedy.

It's a tried and true recipe for bringing in those bucks. Rarely does it result in a clever examination of 17th century drama tropes and a sensitive recontextualisation of them for the modern day.

How do you revitalise interest in the longest-running film franchise of all time? Go back to the first book in the series it's based on, of course! Throw in a blonde guy to rile up some fans and you've got a recipe for a Vesper Martini of interesting adaptation choices.

Find out what has been getting Kim and Charles shaken and stirred in our episode on Casino Royale!

Did you know? Scribe to Screen is now also on Instagram as, shockingly, scribetoscreen. We're going to be dropping some aesthetically pleasing things over there in the future.

The name's Pod. Scribe to Screen Pod. Join Kim and Charles as we talk about Ian Fleming's 1953 novel Casino Royale, and its 2006 film adaptation featuring our first ever blond Bond! Charles was very

I apologise for the extended hiatus. I had to take care of someone. That's the last time they stir my martini.

This week's episode will see Charles and Kim navigate the shadowy world of international espionage, and the even shadowier business of 1950's-spy-novel-to-2000's-action-blockbuster adaptation. No, it's not Jason Bourne. Or is it?

Remember, remember... you know the rest. In episode 12, we discuss the book that radicalised Kim and constituted a third of her teen personality, and that Charles needed to read in his quest for more (Alan) Moore.

It's V for Vendetta, and who better to adapt this masterpiece of a comic than Lilly and Lana Wachowski of Matrix fame?
We'll, uh... give you our thoughts on that in the episode.

I'm making omelettes, and I'm all out of eggs.

Patrons are already enjoying Fireworks Night early with our episode on V for Vendetta! Everyone else, you can access the episode at a slightly less early Fireworks Night this Thursday.

Remember, Remember, the fifth of November.
I thought I grasped the plot.
I watched it before while drinking some port,
And all of its nuance forgot.

Next week's episode is a Fawkesian treat. Kim showed this film to our uni friends four years ago and it baffled me. With 'Watchmen' and 'V' now under my belt, will I see the method in the madness? It's going to be a bash.

I hope you're Pharoah-ciously anticipating our next episode. Well, I'm taking a step back this week and leaving it in Kimberley and our guest Miriam's capable hands.

The Prince of Egypt is already live for patrons and will be up on Thursday for everyone else.

They're crazy. They're rich. They're Asian.
Join Kim and Charles (but mostly Kim) as they break down the differences between crazy-rich Asians and crazy rich-Asians, admit to actually liking a romcom, and gasp at how Hollywood managed to make diamonds from sawdust and a stick of gum.

Also, Scribe to Screen has broken into double digits in its episode count! Hooray!

"The movies have never been a big deal to me. The movies are the movies. They just make them. If they're good, that's terrific. If they're not, they're not. But I see them as a lesser medium than fiction, than literature, and a more ephemeral medium." - Stephen King

There has been some real garbage movies made from Stephen King books. (Dreamcatcher and Sleepwalkers come to mind.) But no matter how many years pass, the author behind Carrie, Christine and Pet Cemetery still loathes the best-regarded horror movie based on his works. King still can't stand Stanley....

Our episode on Stephen King's 'horror' classic is now available for Patrons! We had so much fun making this episode that we actually made too many jokes and had to cut a couple of them out. Far be it from me to let good content go to waste, though. This one's on us!

The final battle for Panem is upon us!
Kimberley Chiu has gone through hell and back this week (much like our protagonist Katniss Everdeen) to edit the audio for this episode. Thank you all for being so patient. We hope this marathon finale is worth the wait.🔥🏹

26/08/2020

Our segues have not improved and neither has the pacing of these films - and our release schedule (oof). Recording and editing the Mockingjay episodes while working has proven... challenging, so we ask for a bit more time to finish off Part 2. It should still release tomorrow for everyone, though.
Hope you are looking forward to joining us in bringing this revolution to a resolution.

Come to District 13! We have nukes.

This is the first half of the last part of the film adaptations of the final book of the Hunger Games series of books of Suzanne Collins' mind. We're in the endgame now in the nation of Panem. Expect searingly hot takes, gushing, and over-analysis of the most minor artistic choices.

And remember to tune in for the marathon finale in just one week's time!😮

I'd also like to take this opportunity to wish my co-host Kimberley Chiu a very happy birthday! You are the face of the revolution as you are of this podcast. I hope Peeta Mellark makes the icing roses on top of your cake🎂🌹

🎼Bright eyes, burning like fire🎼
This week, we're covering Richard Adams' children's classic, 'Watership Down', and the 1978 animation that traumatised a generation with its psychedelic visuals and at times hard-hitting score. Does it stand the test of time? Does that even matter in children's media? We answer these questions and more on Scribe to Screen.
Hop to it!

Kim might think the Hunger Games trilogy is pretty decent, but what are your favourite 'YA' books (or even books you read when you were younger) that you think deserve more critical attention?

Canonisation is a cruel (and incredibly biased through the clout it gives to institutions and academic circles) concept, but now it's time to show some love for those books that hold up, that are more than just 'fiction for people not old enough to vote or drink alcohol'.

We cover our earliest text yet on Scribe to Screen with the Victorian classic 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte. Does Cary Fukunaga's 2011 film adaptation evoke the passion, the supernatural elements, the pervading hatred of everything un-English within the novel? Does it even try to grapple with those themes? Find out in our latest episode.

Taking a quick break from Panem, we're going Victorian with Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and comparing it with Cary Fukunaga's 2011 film adaptation. Why does Jane love Edward Rochester? Why did the i

Our third episode is live, and it's a big one. Not only has Kim wanted to talk about this to anyone who will listen for a decade, but it marks the beginning of our first marathon series. Every alternate episode will be following the progression of The Hunger Games' adaptations. So without further ado, may the odds be ever in our favour as we delve into the one that started it all.
