Climate change in 2025 is becoming a significant issue, with 2024 being the warmest year recorded. The World Meteorological Organisation's report showed global temperatures soared to 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels, highlighting the growing impacts of human-induced climate change. The year also saw extreme weather disasters, such as Typhoon Yagi, Hurricanes Helene and Milton, and Tropical Cyclone Chido, causing economic losses and causing displacement. The Paris Agreement's targets are not out of reach, but it serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for drastic emission cuts, early warning systems, adaptation measures, and global cooperation to promote long-term sustainability and climate justice.

Plastic pollution is a global issue, with waste from various countries ending up on Henderson Island due to the South Pacific gyre. Asia, a major importer of plastic waste, has been a major contributor to this issue. In 2018, China and Southeast Asian nations imposed import bans, but concerns remain that these bans could lead to imports being rerouted to weaker control jurisdictions like Vietnam and Malaysia. Domestic factors, industrial and consumer demand, and import bans contribute to this issue.

Extreme heat has impacted South Sudan since mid-February, affecting poor housing and outdoor workers. Schools were closed for two weeks, and people were advised to stay indoors and stay hydrated. Heatwaves are the deadliest type of extreme weather event, impacting morbidity, agriculture, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. In South Sudan, a third of the population lacks access to water, and only 1% of cities offer green spaces. The impacts disproportionately affect women and girls, widening the gap between their opportunities and men's.

Biodiversity, the diversity of life on Earth, is crucial for ecological resilience and withstanding disturbances like storms and diseases. A decrease in biodiversity destabilises habitats and weakens life networks. Climate change, such as rising sea levels and coral bleaching events, accelerates these threats, threatening low-lying coastal areas and vital reefs for fisheries and tourism.

Climate change is a significant global health threat, causing severe health consequences, particularly for vulnerable populations. Eco-anxiety, a term gaining traction in media and experts, refers to a chronic fear of environmental doom or mental distress associated with worsening environmental conditions. The anxiety response to climate change is characterised by deep feelings of loss, hopelessness, and anger. The operationalisation of the term is unclear, with various definitions and terminology used in literature. Understanding the anxiety response to climate change is crucial due to its increased global awareness.

The ocean plays a vital role in regulating the climate, supporting marine life, and sustaining billions of people through food and jobs. The Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia is experiencing a prolonged marine heatwave, with over 15°C Degree Heating Weeks (DHW) of stress. Scientists warn that if the heat stress persists, large-scale coral death could follow. The Great Barrier Reef, Australia's other great reef, also faced record heat stress in 2024.

The world must swiftly protect marine ecosystems through decarbonisation and adaptation measures, especially for coastal communities impacted by warmer seas, to ensure their survival and food security.

Climate change disproportionately impacts women, especially in low-income and marginalised communities, with increased health risks, energy poverty, and gender-based violence. Women and children are 14 times more likely to die from extreme weather disasters. Climate change threatens to exacerbate existing gender disparities, erasing progress in health, education, and livelihoods.

Meet the Blue Water Hero, Thanda Ko Gyi!

Thanda learnt to dive when she was studying in Australia. She discovered ghost fishing gear off southern Myanmar while diving.

Motivated by what she discovered, she founded the Myanmar Ocean Project (MOP), the country's first registered marine conservation organisation. Thanda led a team of international diving volunteers in removing nearly 2 tonnes of ghost gear from 100 sites in the Myeik Archipelago.

The Asia-Pacific region is pivotal in shaping the future energy landscape, with renewables and green industries potentially creating up to 14 million new jobs by 2030 and 180 million by 2050. However, women's representation in energy policy and decision-making positions remains limited, with a range of 3% to 15%. Asian governments are integrating gender considerations into climate policies and promoting women's leadership, while women-led non-profit organisations are driving change. Enriching women's rights and opportunities is vital for a Just Transition and accelerating climate action.

Empowering women in agriculture is crucial for addressing food insecurity and the climate crisis. However, women in agri-food often face poverty, hunger, malnutrition, and gender-based discrimination. Achieving gender equality in agriculture can increase global GDP by 1% and reduce food insecurity by 45 million people. Governments can drive transformational social and economic change by embedding gender equality into agricultural policies and investments.
