“Always make sure that the person with whom you are talking understands that you are focusing on the immorality of animal exploitation as an institutionalized practice and that you are not judging that person as an individual. Approach that person as someone who has not yet really grappled with the issues involved in animal ethics and you are there to educate—and not to judge.

On the other hand, you should always be clear that veganism is a moral imperative. That is, if animals have moral value—if they are not just things—then our moral obligation is to stop eating, wearing, and using them. Anything less than that represents continued and direct participation in animal exploitation.”

“I don’t see not exploiting vulnerable beings–human or nonhuman–as being about ‘personal purity.’ I see it as a matter of caring about fundamental justice and acting on it. To call that a matter of ‘personal purity’ is simply to say that justice should not be a matter of clear moral principle. And I could not disagree with that more.”

“The Abolitionist Approach regards veganism as a moral imperative. By this we mean that if animals matter morally, we are morally obligated to stop eating, wearing, and using them. That is, going vegan is not just an option for someone who agrees that animals matter morally; it is a fundamental moral obligation.”

My colleague, Dr. Daniel Came, sent me this. He saw it on Facebook and does not know the author. Given that the present pandemic like most originated through the cross-species transmission of microorganisms from animals to humans, a vegan world would be the best way to prevent these things, which will only increase with climate catastrophe.

“We cannot justify failing to extend this one right to nonhumans unless we arbitrarily declare that animals have no moral value whatsoever, a position that most people reject. Therefore, if animals matter morally, we cannot treat them exclusively as resources and recognizing the right not to be property would rule out all institutionalized exploitation of animals. Abolitionists (as I use the term) reject domestication and maintain that nonhumans ought not to be brought into existence for human use, however ‘humanely’.”

“There are two and only two choices:

Choice 1: You stop eating, wearing, and otherwise using all nonhuman animals;

Choice 2: You continue to participate directly in exploiting nonhuman animals.

There is no third choice. You are either vegan or you are participating directly in animal exploitation.”

“The best justification we have for the unimaginable amount of suffering and death that we impose on animals is that they taste good. We enjoy the taste of animal foods. But how is this any different from Michal Vick claiming that his dog fighting operation was justifiable because he enjoyed watching dogs fight? Vick liked sitting around a pit watching animals fight. We enjoy sitting around the summer barbecue pit roasting the corpses of animals who have had lives and deaths that are as bad, if not worse than, Vick’s dogs. What is the difference between Michael Vick and those of us who eat animal foods?”

“Since the beginning of time, there have been—in total—about 110 billion humans who have lived and died. We kill more nonhuman animals than that every single year. Think about that for a second. Our exploitation of nonhumans represents violence on a scale that is unparalleled. The largest number of animals we kill is for food—about 60 billion land animals and at least one trillion sea animals killed annually. And there are many billions more killed every year for various other reasons, including biomedical research, entertainment, and sport.”

Vegan is a form of protest, join the fight
